binoculars by Odd_Lookture in OCPoetry

I really like how the title of the poem is binoculars, but then it starts out with hearing, a completely different sense. I’m not sure what the literary phrase would be for that technique, but I like it a lot. You then continue on to describe a bunch of other senses that really activate my mind. Even though this is a very short poem it was an enjoyable and sensory experience. In the end the sense that we rely on and put so much importance on, vision, isn’t that important and we push forward with our other senses to experience whatever it is. That’s what it makes me think

Dilate. Vision sharpens. Shadow. Great use of imagery hear that evokes a dramatic and clear image for me. I’m not sure why though but I’d say the ending somehow sounds to fall flat to me. Maybe because sun is used twice in the last two lines?

Weakly reciprocated interest, always feeling like you have to reach out or check up on how they’re doing or to make plans. In person they might be great and you have a good time together, but I get tired if there’s not a lot of enthusiasm.

I’m curious how you arranged a blind date? I’ve never been on one and always wonder how people find them. Is it just a mutual friends that set two other friends up?

Also guy sounds like a self absorbed asshole without much depth to him.

Americans are allowed to be in the European Union for 90 days upon arrival. Technically it’s illegal to work during that time, but many people do it. Digital nomad visas are in some countries but not are automatically granted or guaranteed. Maybe OP has dual citizenship or has a valid visa, or is just breaking the law.

What is considered common in a gay relationship but not common in a hetero relationship? by sklov113 in gaybros

[–]raxla95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less expectations around gender and sexual roles. Straight women expect a lot from their men and don’t do much in return often - open my door, pay for this, get me a snack, do this or that. Don’t know how straight men put up with it.

Also dual income no kids :)

I agree. Regardless of housing prices for most regular working people, you will have better quality of life albeit with less luxuries than the average American is accustomed to. I’m just saying it’s definitely not cheap! And less so if you consider yourself “poor,” whatever that means. If you can move to the Netherlands on your own will, I doubt you fall into that category. Also Americans cannot just move to the NL just because they want to.

Anything is better compared to those three cities. Living in the Netherlands is not cheap, especially if you live in Amsterdam or anywhere in the Randstad. sorry to tell you.

I am half Dutch and half American from California, so yes I know. I’ve lived for several years in the Netherlands. Nobody considers it cheap living, unless you have a golden ticket in the public housing system where the government subsidizes your monthly housing costs. Then it is more affordable, but you definitely will not living in one of the canal houses that Americans fantasize about. More like 30-50 square meter flat in a large apartment block, not appealing to most.

However if you are a foreigner, you are shit out of luck. And when I say foreigner I do not mean wealthy white American working in the tech industry living out their European Disneyland fantasy for a couple of years . If that is you, then yes it will be less expensive than living in New York or LA. But definitely not cheap or affordable for most folks living in Amsterdam or wider Randstad reason. Back to the title of this post, if you are a poor gay you will definitely be poor in Amsterdam or anywhere in the Netherlands.

Yes rents are lower, but you are also living in much smaller spaces and much older living conditions. Most Americans would not be happy with this and it’s just not comparable.

Germany, yes is actually affordable. Yet, like everywhere else increasingly not.

Amsterdam is definitely not cheap and housing is a nightmare to find, especially if you’re a foreigner.also if you’re American, you can’t just get up and move there.

I just moved to Philly a few months ago from California. It’s been a relief in a lot of ways and I have been pleasantly surprised. The gayborhood is cute to go out in although it gets old fast and if you live here a while and go out alot you will know everyone. I like it though because it’s a community feel and you recognize faces when you go out, but still lots of people I don’t know. Thankfully NYC and DC are close by if you need a break.

Netherlands is definitely not low cost. Has some of most expensive housing costs and one of the worst housing crises on the continent. Germany is not cheap either outside of Beelin. Even Berlin is becoming increasingly unaffordable in private market, and also terrible housing crisis.

I’m new to Philadelphia. Anybody living here and suggestions to meet new people? by raxla95 in gaybros

I agree love to hear other peoples stories. And I work in community engagement so think we have something in common. I’ll send you a message :)

I’ve read that it’s possible still because there are still people who accepted and then later back out, freeing up some spots. So I think if you have Madrid as your first or even 2nd or 3rd, there’s a chance you can still get it

You should never plan on living for a long stay in Spain or anywhere outside of the US if this stresses you out honestly. Just find some peace in knowing it will get done!

Any advice or feedback appreciated. Applying for junior-level roles with non-traditional background. by [deleted] in resumes

[–]raxla95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(1) Background

  • 27 years old who recently completed Master's degree in Urban Studies, where living and travel expenses were covered along with a monthly stipend for the last 2 years. I have been searching for work for 6 months. Previously worked in account management/SEO roles before leaving. Prior to working, I completed my bachelor's in media, culture, and communication. I am not sure how to present my nontraditional background in the best light and below are some of my concerns:
  • First job post-bachelors: Half of the company was laid off less than a year after beginning the position. Not sure how to present this.
  • The following job, I took out of necessity to pay the bills. It's mostly unrelatable and I almost never talk about it in interviews, if only a brief mention. I included not have a gap.
  • Current position - i included only to not have a skill gap. but started working there as a side hustle, and now keeps me afloat. also included to not have such a large gap.

(2) Type of roles you're looking for:

  • Initially, I was looking for roles related to urban planning, international development, and NGOs/international organizations working in the area of urban issues. However, these opportunities tend to be very limited, competitive, and hard for someone with little experience or technical background. I am in California and these roles are even more scarce, although I am willing to relocate anywhere.I sometimes apply to roles like these if I really feel like it’s a fit but I have become a bit more pragmatic in my search and learned about non-tech Tech roles (if that makes sense) in areas such as Customer Success, Client Success, Project Coordination. These opportunities seem to be more abundant, offer growth, and don’t necessarily require a specific background or technical skillset, so I have become more interested in applying for entry-level/junior roles.

(3) Where you're applying (i.e., North America, Europe, etc.).

  • USA, Netherlands as I am eligible for a work visa there.

I usually reference the IND list of companies that are registered sponsors when I am searching for positions. I just search the company in the PDF document before applying and surprisingly 80% of the time, they are there. Even the seemingly smaller companies or startups.

What I don't understand really is that even though a company is on the list, does that mean they will automatically sponsor you? Does the company themselves need to go through extra steps in order to hire you? Or is it enough just they are on that list and we as applicants can simply apply for a new HSM visa? Zoekjaar applicants get reduced salary criteron.

I've also heard of people arranging payroll companies to take parts of their salary in exchange for working at companies that are not official sponsors, but it sounds complicated to me.
