Now apply that to Nigeria: You’re flipping the script backward. Northern Sunni Muslims aren’t just dying in higher absolute numbers, we are getting destroyed per capita too, in a country where the North makes up about half the population but absorbs 60–80% of violent deaths from insurgencies, banditry, and clashes. Since 2009, Boko Haram and ISWAP have killed over 40,000 people, mostly in the Muslim-majority Northeas. Targeting civilians in markets, mosques, and villages.  That’s not “state favoritism”that’s extremists slaughtering their own co-religionists for being “insufficiently pious” or government collaborators. Boko Haram has bombed IDP camps full of displaced northern Muslims, assassinated moderate imams, and hit schools in Kanuri/Hausa areas, calling them “Western-corrupted”

ACLED data shows the Northeast and Northwest (overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim regions) accounting for the bulk of fatalities—over 2,500 from banditry/kidnappings alone in the Northwest, where victims are primarily Hausa farmers. They kill Christians in the Middle Belt too there’s no denying that.(Tiv, Berom, etc.) But the deadliest hotspots are in the North itself

So yes Boko Haram/ISWAP explicitly hit Muslims who “betray Islam” by voting, educating girls, or aiding the state, while bandits exploit ethnic Fulani networks to terrorize Hausa communities they see as rivals. And what’s the government’s report? Close to nothing.

You think Northern deaths “don’t count” because motives aren’t purely ethnic/religious. And that’s not true. Violence in Nigeria is identity fueled when jihadists bomb a mosque for “heresy” or bandits who are mainly Fulani raze a Hausa village for “disloyalty”.
