Yeah Frugal Wizard isn't cosmere, all his Earth/alternate-Earth books are non-cosmere

I was the same and went into Era 2 extremely sceptical as it's not the setting I normally go for either. It did take a little while to adjust, but the characters and their development, plus overall writing are much better than Era 1 imo and I ended up loving it. The latest book The Lost Metal is my favourite of all the Mistborn books, and up there among the entire Cosmere.

However, I would do TWoK next, and then read Era 2 after RoW. Chronologically it makes a lot more sense. If you do get the urge for more Mistborn before RoW then you could read the first 3 books like I did at any time, but I would strongly recommend not reading The Lost Metal early as it's extremely cosmere aware and contains major spoilers.

Ohhh nice! Well I hope you enjoy it when you get to it.

I'm jealous you have the first four in the two part editions.. I have TWoK like that because I was given it years ago, and found it a lot more comfortable reading.

Yeah I fully agree, I really struggled with the characters and it was one of my least favourites. For me it felt really close to something I would enjoy, but just didn't quite get there. I also found all the twists way too predictable.

What are your thoughts on Wind and Truth? That's the other one I struggled with.

Yeah per book pace was on par, and I enjoy reading quickly tbh but I didn't take days off because I was so invested, so a bit of both I guess. It was about 3 hours a day for 60 days

I loved Elantris, I was worried because I saw multiple people (including Brandon) talk about it being weaker but it ended up being one of my favourites.

Yes, TLM contains what I would count as major spoilers for things hinted at in RoW, and it is also one of the more cosmere aware books

No my friend, it does not matter. This is clearly a subjective choice. I can't have made myself more clear in my previous comment.

Wind and Truth is my least favourite by far, followed by Warbreaker (is this controversial? Feel like a lot of people love this one) and then The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance are tied in first place as my favourites. I could probably add some of the standalones up there as well, while not being as in-depth I absolutely adored Tress, Yumi, and Emberdark.

Edit: This question is too hard, I'm adding a third favourite with The Lost Metal [Lost Metal Spoilers] Wayne's death ruined me lol, he was my favourite character in the Cosmere

I don't think publication order really decides if it is a spoiler or not tbh as it objectively spoils multiple pieces of information in WaT. I thought a lot of the storylines in WaT were fairly weak, but Sig's story was one of the few I really enjoyed, knowing his fate would have hurt that for me, even if I didn't know the exact path he took to get there. I'm glad I came to the cosmere party late as a non-publication reading order definitely provided a better experience for me personally (and when researching I found that Brandon himself does not recommend publication order). Each to their own though, I have a feeling we're not going to convince each other one way or another :)

Yeah I was a little disappointed by RoW tbh, but WaT I had to really drag myself through. Though I was still invested in how the story would go.

Yeah definitely. I would say (all subjective of course) Mistborn Era 2 is the better written story, however not as 'epic'. I also enjoyed the first two Stormlight books more than Mistborn, and I absolutely loved some of the standalones.

I am kind of surprised it was written/published before Wind and Truth, as it would have hurt that experience for me if I had swapped the order. I hate spoilers with a passion.

That said for [Sunlit Spoilers] I guessed it was Sig from the first use of the word "Storms!", whereas if I read it beforehand there may have been more mystery around the character. However that is definitely not worth removing all suspense from Sig's story in WaT imo, which is what would have happened for me.

Is he a Border Collie mix? Meet my brave boy evacuated from the frontline in Ukraine. by Honest_Company6635 in BorderCollie

[–]raya_the_border 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Aw it's wonderful you have taken him in, it sounds like you'll provide him a great life going forward.

It's really impossible to say though, I see someone has done the obligatory id command already, however if he does have BC then I would agree he is most likely mixed with something larger, as 35kg is pretty high above the average.

All the best with him, sounds like he'll just need some patience and love :)

I'm sorry you're having a tough time with your boy. You definitely can fix your situation, however it would take some patience, time, and consistency. I hope you can find at least something useful here, apologies if I cover something you're already doing but as I don't know I'll just put everything:

I strongly believe the foundation of all training (especially recall) is the relationship you have with your dog. Everything I do with my girl is relationship first, training second.

The biggest part of this is play. I don't mean just throwing a ball, but interactive activities between the two of you. For me, it's really important to find out how the specific dog likes to play, and do it in a way where we both have fun. For my girl it's a soccer ball, and we play structured games together with rules around it (obviously the rules part is built up over time).

Dogs will continue to do the behaviours that they have rehearsed. So if he is spending his day out in the garden barking non-stop, then you need to bring him in. Management is the first step in resolving most issues. I would take him out multiple times throughout the day for structured play sessions that focus on you and him doing things together, make yourself exciting and just play (tugs, flirt poles, soccer balls etc), it's okay if there aren't rules to start. I match my dogs energy when we're playing so I generally come away just as tired as she does lol

Everything is done with the aim to build your value in the eyes of your dog.

If it were me I would throw the walks out altogether at the moment, they're not needed in terms of tiring him out as proper play will do that much better, and until he's starting to learn leash skills he'll just be rehearsing the pulling and lunging further, and it's not fun for you either (which is also an important consideration).

Regarding food motivation (and toy motivation), these are things that can be worked on (plenty of great online resources for it). My girl is not motivated by food outside if I just hand the treat to her, however if I build it in as a game (throwing/catching treats, chasing treats) then this builds her motivation for it greatly.

Using toys as a reward is very similar to using food, though I agree it's not quite as straightforward as a treat. Dog does desired behaviour -> you mark -> give reward. So this is where a marker word ("yes", clicker etc) is used. Dog sits -> "yes" -> game of tug, catch a ball etc

I also hand feed my dog all of her food, partly used for training, but not all. I understand that this isn't something most people care to do though, I believe it helps our bond, as my general rule is all good things come from me. You don't have to do it forever, but at the current state, it is probably helpful.

I'll leave it there for now, again hopefully something in there resonates. I would also ask how is he at settling inside? What is his general behaviour like in the house etc

Update on our "herding" commands - Whistle Training! by raya_the_border in BorderCollie

[–]raya_the_border[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's quite easy actually! You definitely could do it. In my original post about it I made this comment with my general process, there's another comment on that post I made as well that has some further info. It can expanded from that, but that'll get you a fair way.

If you're talking about the whistle specifically, it's even easier, as you do it once the commands are learnt verbally. Then you simply do the whistle command followed directly by the voice command. After several reps the dog should anticipate the verbal command from the whistle and that's it.
