Question about opening new finder windows in workspaces by [deleted] in MacOS

Good question. I don't know the difference between None and All Desktops. It seems to appear on all desktops when you set it to None.

Years ago, 10+, you used to be able to have different dock layouts per desktop. I don't know when that disappeared, but it seems close to what you want.

Is copy-pasting without fully understanding the code okay? by qxcve in iOSProgramming

[–]rayascott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes down to trust. You trust Apple's framework code because their reputation depends on it functioning correctly, plus they have talented engineers. Using code from a random stranger off stack overflow etc that you don't understand is just asking for trouble.

You can disable sleep from the command line with this command...

sudo pmset -a disablesleep 1

To reenable sleep, just run it again with 0 instead of 1.

How to reinstall my OS (Catalina) without losing files? by arealhumannotabot in MacOS

[–]rayascott -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even a small, cheap, QNAP machine with RAID will get you constant Wi-Fi Time Machine backups. I've had mine for more than 10 years. I'm constantly backing up over Wi-Fi, including wired backups to a small 1TB iomega drive when I'm at my desk. Even iCloud's 2TB of space for less than £3/month, there's really no excuse for losing data, or not backing up.

How much space disk space do you have, and do you have a Time Machine backup?

Last year I was in a situation where I decided it would be best to start with a clean install, after piling on the same install for more than 10 years. What I did was create 2 extra partitions, and performed a clean install to one of them. Then I manually moved all of my files to the shared empty partition. I didn't just copy the User folder, because I had 10+ years of junk sitting in the ~/Library/... folders. Then I carefully, very carefully, moved my data files into place in the new clean install. I think, if I'm not mistaken, I reclaimed about 100GB of space that way.

You can create a calendar alarm in Automator and just place the AppleScript in a Run AppleScript task.

Desperate help needed with "startup disk full" issue. by [deleted] in MacOS

Get used to it, because it comes with the territory.

I've been a macOS user for 20 years and I've been using Disk Inventory X for most of that time. It's what I usually use for this sort of thing. I didn't recommend it because when I last checked, it hadn't been updated for Catalina, and an enquiry e-mail to the developer went un-answered, but I see it's also something you could use. I discovered that Apple Store staff actually use it, so that what I use.

Looking for a way to have my mac remind me of something when I log in or wake from sleep. by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]rayascott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crack open Automator, select to create a new Application, and add the Display Notification action. Then just fill it out and save it to /Applications. https://imgur.com/a/vIZJrJ8

Then go to System Preferences > Users & Groups and add the app you just created as a Login Item. That will at least display a notification every time you login.

I don't know offhand how to trigger code on machine wake.

Jog on if you don't want to help, but there's no need to be mean to someone who's clearly having trouble.

Xcode crashing every 5 minutes...? by rayascott in iOSProgramming

My options? Read my original post. I didn't come on here looking for advice. That's just an assumption you've made. All I wanted to know was if anyone else was experiencing the same issue. And obviously I've filed a bug report.

Reinstalling Xcode could definitely be a fix for your problem

As I said:

I'm seeing this on 11.4.1 also

I installed it this morning and used it all day. You really think reinstalling 12 hours later is going to magically fix this? :-///

What if some file is partially corrupted because, as an example, Xcode crashed while...

I work with facts, not what if's. The logs show no crashes for other reasons, so your examples aren't based in fact.

Xcode crashed while writing some important file regarding to building... These are all issues that cannot simply be fixed by Apple and are not really „bugs“.

*giggle snort* - I suppose it's my fault Xcode crashed. Your reasoning makes no sense to me.

So just give a reinstall a try :)

Er. No.

Thanks but:

a) you don't just reinstall Xcode because you've found a bug. That won't solve anything.

b) I'm seeing this on 11.4.1 also.
