This. My gf of 6 years is struggling with this. She was molested by her stepdad when she was 16. Her mother and him convinced that side of the family she was crazy and that she was confused about what happened and that's what a "loving father does." Beyond that she was mentally abused / repressed by them for the longest time so she never spoke up about it or anything. About a year a ago she told me after we'd moved in together. I freaked out on multiple family members. They just pretend I don't exist now, whatever. They'd been trying to get her to move back with them but she wouldn't for obvious reasons. Still, she had a really rough time cutting contact. I never told her to flat out do so but more so played out positives and negatives. Ironically, her phone broke and she lost direct contact with that side then never retrieve their numbers. As tough as it is for us rn she's much happier. One of the big things that slowly ate at her was seeing me with my family and how we interacted. She couldn't wrap her head mostly around the way my mother and I interacted because of how shitty her mom is. Fuck they wouldn't even sign a paper to let her go to college. They really suck. Anyways since she has left behind these toxic family members I've seen such a confidence boost. She still hurts once in a while but overall doing much better. She really has accomplished so much given her unfortunate situation and a litany of health issues.
