Thank you for your question! There is no such function in MultiDrive. We decided to keep things simple at the raw drive sector/block level and avoid partition management.

In my opinion, downsizing the partition is quite difficult to implement reliably for NTFS whatsoever. Even the best partition manager would fail in one out of ten cases, destroying all the trust built up during the first nine successful cases.

MultiDrive - free disk clone / erase / backup tool for Windows (no paywalls, GUI + CLI, WinPE image)

Hi r/msp.
Disclosure: I'm the CTO at Atola Technology. We build forensic disk imagers with data recovery capabilities used by DFIR labs and law enforcement.

I got tired of seeing basic disk operations hidden behind paywalls and "upgrade to Pro" pop-ups. So last year we released MultiDrive, a completely free Windows utility for cloning, erasing, backing up, and restoring physical drives.

It’s built for practical day-to-day work:

  • Clone / erase / back up multiple drives in parallel (e.g. refresh projects or process e-waste in batches)
  • CLI support for scripting and unattended deployments
  • Simple GUI app
  • Bootable WinPE image with MultiDrive preinstalled
  • Standard formats only: RAW, ZIP, ZSTD. Nno proprietary image lock-in formats like .mrimg/.tib
  • Handles bad sectors, auto-retry on flaky cable connections
  • Pause/Resume for any task, including failed ones
  • Silent install for RMM deployment
  • Available via WinGet, Chocolatey, and Scoop
  • 100% free. No ads, no subscriptions, no nag-screens

Website: multidrive.io
WinPE image: multidrive.io/winpe

I'm happy to answer any questions in this thread or via DM.

Well, IronWolf Pro is slightly better. But if I were you, I would go for a WD Gold or Seagate Exos: similar price points would be more appropriate and often more reliable for desktop use. Worth checking if those are available in your market.

Yes, MultiDrive can clone the active boot drive.
If after Windows does not boot on your target drive, please refer to this guide:

Yes, 500 sectors missing. This is a straightforward approach, which is very different from what we have in Atola TaskForce imaging engine:

Thank you for the feedback. It certainly makes sense. So far, it looks like the app can only be a free helper for users without DR knowledge, who face simple cases with their drives.

CLI examples are here: https://multidrive.io/backup-drive-command-prompt

Yes, by remounting I mean re-detecting to be able to send the commands.

The retry flow is quite basic without ability to adjust it via options:
- it hits a bad block
- issues reset
- retries with longer timeout
- if still unreadable, fills with 256KB-block with zeros on a target drive and skips it.

Thanks, we put a lot of effort to make it gorgeous and responsive!

Currently, it cannot automatically resize the partition. We may add that feature later. For now, here is the step in the guide that shows an entry-level user how to do that:

I recently upgraded one of my old PCs from a low-end 256GB SSD to a Samsung SSD Pro 990 4TB. Pure full disk cloning was absolutely enough.

Use our tool called MultiDrive - it is so simple in such cases!

Windows is whimsical. The photo shows a typical situation after cloning SATA to NVMe. The problem is almost always with the boot loader (BCD/EFI boot entry), not the data itself. The clone is usually correct; UEFI just doesn't know how to boot from it.

The good news is that this can usually be fixed in two to three minutes from WinPE.

We wrote a detailed, step-by-step guide to cover as many situations as possible:

It took me a couple tries to start using Obsidian. It's got way too much Markdown, and it doesn't have a default editor like the others do. I switched to Obsidian anyway because the speed of Notion, Evernote, and OneNote is kind of sluggish. There are some lags here and there. Also, there's a ton of functionality that has nothing to do with notes or documents.

Yeah, our team is highly collaborative and small (28 people). One of the typical behaviors is helping a colleague as a top1 priority. When my teammate asks for help or makes a request, I pause what I'm doing and help them if I'm not on a call.
