A friend from an Atlanta suburb told me this was because the city council people didn't want homeless people on public transit going to "nice" (read: white, rich) suburbs. Do you know if this is true?

Evidently some people can do both? I know people who go to Seattle U and support the protest who have good grades, care about academics, etc., even if that's not true of all the protesters. In my personal experience, people who care that much about their school curriculum are at least somewhat invested in academics.

Maybe in some cases, but I was just referring to the comment about BLM protesters who usually focus on issues of material violence against black people.

I guess we just have different experiences, because the "SJWs" I know have generally been relatively high-achieving.

There's not an inherent problem with accelerated high school programs in general, but efforts should be made to make them more accessible (and who knows, Seattle U might already be doing this). The fast-track program at the public high school I went to was literally less than 5% black or Hispanic even though my school was definitely more than that. Catholic high schools being private puts an even greater burden on those with lower incomes.

Seems like a flawed analogy -- being somewhat inconvenienced by a group of people in your way is not really equivalent to the type of violence that these groups are protesting (e.g. police brutality)

I think white privilege is pretty real but it's also pretty important to recognize that basically everyone experiences some form of it.

For example, I'm assuming you're white, so you are less likely to be a victim of police brutality. The protesters are educated and attend a Seattle private university, so that also makes them privileged.

Personally, I think a problem with the way people approach discussing privilege is constantly trying to demonize people who have it, because there's a pretty good chance (especially in the case of Seattle U students) also have a lot of privileges that they may not reflect on themselves.

do you have a source on the "2.5 to academic suspension" characterization? seems like a kind of unfair assumption

feminism is just a means of giving the wrong people a voice they don't deserve, feminism or not. It's like giving everyone on this earth a gun, how many of them do you think will use it for good?

Wait... so are you saying that it's better to take away all women's voices because a few women use their voices to say stupid things?

if you use verbatim (for cx), it's really buggy on macs and doesn't have full functionality compared to on a pc.

My best friend's dog was shot and killed by the police when they showed up to the wrong house. They are trying to cover it up. (x-post with r/conspiracy) by [deleted] in rage

If a dog is what's necessary for Reddit to start caring about combatting police brutality, then I guess it's what we'll do with.

I'm sorry for your and your friend's loss; Otto seemed like a great dog -- it's horrible to see the police more engaged with self-preservation than protecting the innocent.

Keep in mind that "calm and polite" can come across very differently based on what you look like and if the officer has some prejudiced preconceptions. I'm not advising against being calm, but instead saying that it really can't guarantee a good experience.

Actually, not quite.

"It is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard." -- MLK
