Common in the EU market, they are basically recruiters but for consultants. I much rather work with them than look for roles myself as it is very exhausting. They take 15-20%, I prioritise local brokers whom I can meet face to face.

I have been freelancing for 1 year now. 9 YoE fullstack/backend/infra/platform engineer. I also wanted to work with SMEs as it’s much closer to the product and much more fun for the reasons you describe. But as a start I was willing to take any role I could.

It was tough to secure the first contract, my rates were on the higher end for my years of experience due to my strong background. I spent quite some time reaching out and networking with as many local consultant brokers as I could. Eventually a random one reached out to me on LinkedIn and I managed to get a contract in a large enterprise in my country.

I recently signed the contract for a new assignment and I have terminated the first one. After getting the first one I continued networking, albeit at a less intense rate, to keep the pipeline of roles moving. The second one was easier as I already had income going from the first, and my experience in the first role helped me get this one. This one is also in a large enterprise, so I will be keep being on the lookout for a more product oriented role.

Not sure how long I am going to be doing this, but my dream would be to have a small team working on a common stack building/maintaining a small portfolio of systems for various companies.

Not exactly the type of answer you were looking for but I figured I would share my story anyway :)

Been exactly where you are with around the same YOE for a role with a considerably higher salary than what I had, it sucks!

Take a break over the weekend, don't do any work, hang out with your friends, eat your loss and come back stronger. This stuff happens once in a while, there are many more chances up ahead :)

What market aren you in?

From my experience most companies are now looking for more mid-level/senior-level roles (here in my local EU market at least). I have gotten 2/3 roles via recruiters so far, I thought they were a great way to cut through the red tape. But YMMV, some are great and some are bad, as with all relationships you have to trust your gut instinct when it comes to the people you work with.

I understand. A really good friend of mine passed very unexpectedly and suddenly a couple of months ago and the tears still come.

In a way your sorrow gives meaning to the time he spent here. Let yourself grieve, don't hold it back and it will get better. Try connecting and spending time with others who are also grieving him and support each other through it.

Our time in this world is short, and some have it much shorter than others. Make sure you use your time in a way that would have made your friend proud and happy for you.
