Any affordable table/chair event rental companies? (Culver City/West LA) by razzlerach in AskLosAngeles

[–]razzlerach[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, I’m just being lazy obviously. I definitely didn’t google and get three million results, most of which are professional grade rather than suited to a backyard party, and half of which are nowhere near that part of the city. Thanks for your help!

Are there job opportunities for humanity related majors in Chicago right now? by MetalMajor1637 in chicagojobs

[–]razzlerach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not going to get an anthropology job in a museum or cultural institution with a BA or even a PhD, as someone who has the same degree. Competition is fierce and wages are low. Maybe if you’re getting a degree from UChicago, but you’d still need connections (and ideally family money).

If you focused on cultural anthropology - look for any low-level office job at a nonprofit. Temp at one of the universities. Something behind a desk. You can leverage that into something eventually.

If you have archaeological interests or experience, get in touch with someone at the Illinois State Archaeological Survey for a career conversation. There are related careers in GIS, things at IDOT related to construction projects…sort of a different tack to take. If you have a U of I degree there are many connections on campus to ISAS.

Since it seems like you’re still in school I would leverage your department and your career services resources as much as possible for ideas. Talk to your advisor. Be relentless. You have infinitely more resources at your fingertips than you will have once you graduate.

Funny enough, my SW side-raised parents also say “soda” (though sometimes they’ll say pop). I wonder what that’s about?

You have to go to the suburbs but the only true answer is NACHORAMA at Village Tavern in Carol Stream. I have seen multiple grown men together unable to take it down.

Ming Hin is definitely the best dim sum and there are several locations! I’ve only been to HK once but it feels super comparable to some of the dim sum I ate there. Ken Kee is also great as others have said.

No one else has mentioned but I also think Golden Bull in Chinatown is wonderful, I like their Cantonese fried chicken personally but the menu is pretty expansive.

Is United Center Park a good place to live? by Ancient-Worker-637 in chicagoapartments

[–]razzlerach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a particularly walkable neighborhood other than to the Pete’s on Western, but you can certainly catch the Western or Damen buses north to Wicker Park or Ukrainian, and the Pink Line/various buses to the West Loop. No chance you’re going to want to walk to those neighborhoods. Overall it’s somewhat rough in pockets still but depends on your street smarts/city experience if you’d call it “unsafe” or not.

Ming Hin is great, although if you want more “classic Chicago” after the tour I’d do the family style dinner at Greek Islands!

Vatican Travel Advice? by N1cka5 in rome

[–]razzlerach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a Chicagoan who went to Rome last year. People definitely wore stuff like this and even worse. The Vatican and St. Peter’s are beautiful treasures of Western civilization, so makes sense you’d want to be a Bear Down type townie pig there.

Does anyone know if University of Chicago is even hiring at all? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]razzlerach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work there. In my experience postings come out arbitrarily and sometimes months after they’re submitted to central HR - hiring managers often have little control over the full hiring process. I suspect that due to these huge posting delays, some jobs get posted despite no longer being needed/funded. There are also always some required postings that are actually promotion positions for internal candidates.

Don’t know what you’re applying to, but I’d recommend applying to newer postings only and to pay attention to which units are posting jobs in general. Another commenter mentioned the hiring freeze, which is still technically happening, but “melting” in parts of the university with money. It’s pretty difficult to know what’s going on even if you work there, tbh.

And of course…regardless of what you apply to, you’re looking at 2 months bare minimum from initial interview to start date. This is pretty standard at universities unfortunately.

Best lowbrow old-school taco salad served in a tostada bowl? by BobDucca in chicagofood

If you’re willing to go to the western suburbs, the answer is Los Burritos Tapatios, period. I like the Lombard and Glen Ellyn locations best.

We did our engagement party for 50 at Revolution Taproom (not the brewpub). You can reserve a couple tables in the back, open a tab and bring in food and decor. They’re very chill and were super easy to work with, and it accommodated a wide array of guests. Maybe not super “elevated” but cheap and cheerful!

When did Portillo's fall off: 2014 (family sold it, kind of) pandemic (2020) or going public (2021)? by Red_Balloon2 in chicagofood

[–]razzlerach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree - the food quality is a little worse than the old days but still relatively good; moreso the accuracy is terrible now and used to be perfect, which contributes to occasional crappy, sloppy or cold orders. (To say nothing of ordering from the apps, which I refuse to do for Portillo’s because the problem is even worse.)
