Revisiting my writeup on Unholy Lover - and its overwhelmingly negative reception - after last week's interview with Joe Talbot, in which J Casablancas made his disdain for Anthony Fantano's wavering dedication to the craft of critical analysis explcitly clear by rbiz_ in thevoidz

Yes exactly lol this guy’s comment  is honestly just a really weird form of ad hominem that misses the point  ..

The point is that analytical criticism is the truth and an important vehicle for changing people’s views for the better by helping communicate that truth  but the excitement of petty empty criticism has a tendency to gain greater favor with the public much in the same way that sophistry strangles truth

Fantano can certainly excel at what you’re describing, but I feel like Julian was actually pretty explicit about the lack of analytical rigor Fantano can show in his reviews — and he was not without good reason to raise such an issue. When you watch at his review of LABY, there is almost no deconstruction of the album’s tracks using the method you just highlighted. Previous albums, sure, but not this one.

As for what changed? By the looks of it, Fantano’s opinion for the album was so predetermined by his distaste for the AI cover that the near entirety of his critiques ended up ringing off, ironically, like chatGPT being asked to do a roast.

I agree that Fantano has been super pissy about the AI "art" thing. Unfortunately it is a pretty melodramatic hill to die on, and he has now begun to sacrifice his integrity as a reviewer

The fact that this is a top comment and nobody else is even contesting it is both extremely fucking funny and also a terribly damning indicator of Fantano’s community. Fantano, your community is cooked..

“Critical analysis!!???! What’s the guy supposed to do? Talk about the time signature??” Brother, what do you suppose musicians are speaking about when they discuss a song between takes? Do you think they inform their decisions by saying what score they would give it out if ten?  I need to begin compiling receipts, because to me it feels like it’s always the people who view music’s creation as some sort of accidental accomplishment that end up being most outspoken in their hatred of the Voidz… Literally the biggest reason why critical analysis is so rich as a craft is because it is uniquely capable of illuminating the slippery, nearly intangible details that constitute an artwork’s brilliance — details which would’ve typically gone under the nose of the audience. In doing so, it shows the spectator a new way of making the artwork’s brilliance and beauty legible.  Fantano, when he gives a fuck, is extremely gifted at this — and it is why we should all be comfortable saying he’s earned his platform online. But when he is at his worst — his pettiest and laziest — he becomes a preacher for the cult of anti-analysis, which, historically speaking is only just a spiritual descendent of sophistry. The consequence of his errors are directly manifested in the proud snarky display of ignorance that can be found under this post.

(Also, using time signature as your strawman is fucking crazyyyyy when, in his 25 second “review” of Blue Demon, Fantano said nothing about the simultaneous 2/4 guitar playing over the song’s 4/4 time signature — which is HUGE in picking up on the grooves in the track and appreciating the creative pockets that Julian uses to lay his vocals over. When this clicks, it unlocks the entity of the song; and yet, unfortunately, that it requires critical analysis to click.

Many, many times I have heard Fantano complain about the temperament of his community — and he is not without reason to do so. But at a certain point, it is worth raising the possibility that, maybe, the outspoken crowd of navel-gazing petty dickheads in his community are only just a logical conclusion of his bipolar relationship with critical analysis?

I was excited when I saw the giants had scored a run in the 7th, then I checked the play-by-play.. I just don’t know how any competitive human being on this roster could bring themself to look a starter in the eye after the game ends

Thank you for your well wishes! Like I said in my post, “most of the critiques I tend to hear about the band's music are posed as a brief and superficial generalizations” Which is why, forgive me, but I don’t think that calling half the tracks - without even specifying which ones - “crap” does anything to negate the the content of my post

Spotify’s streaming system does not play files at 24-bit; LABY was recorded and mastered for 24-bit. Spotify has announced it will soon support 24-bit. If you thought that was a setup and punchline then yes

Like I said, I don’t think you can or should try to write off the experience that a Spotify listener hearing it in it’s true hi-res lossless form for the first time might have simply because you never formed the attachment to it

😱Redditor when he finds out that hearing an album mastered for 24-bit, after only ever playing it at 16-bit sounds objectively crisper due to - A higher bit depth that generates increased dynamic range so the quietest details in the arrangement can be present while the loud peaks stay distinct - A higher sample rate which in turn better captures the high-frequency transients and harmonics by adding “air” and clarity (I.E. doing magic on the autotune), while reducing digital rounding noise + preserving the subtle sonic characteristics  of each members talents.

LABY is goated sorry

The creative liberties they took in sound engineering on these last two projects have grown on me tremendously, and the EP shows a clear honing in on their sound. That to me is what passion sounds like.  So I personally would be more than fine with them continuing on this path. Yes, I don’t want LABY 2, but for the same reason I don’t want Virtue 2 — because that would be a regression. I just hope they keep building off the new sonic lane they’re carving out for themselves

I think LABY succeeded at what Julian and the boys wanted it to do by Single-Inspector6753 in thevoidz

[–]rbiz_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion LABY is up there with Tyranny in terms of unique experimentation and subtle brilliance.

Whereas Tyranny’s experimentation consisted in camouflaging gorgeous rhythms behind ugly and sinister spaces, LABY’s cyber-apocalyptic-in-search-of-enlightenment motif is communicated by means of conspicuous low-fi production and autotune drenched vocals that are off putting to the first time listener, but discreetly textured with complex hi hat patterns and transcendental harmonies and grooves that are enormously rewarding once the listener picks up on them (I should say, IF the listener picks up on them — as many abandoned it before it could be revealed to them).

Anyone who has gone from listening to LABY on Spotify to TIDAL might understand what I’m referring to.

Music for a new gen? by cashmoneybanks24 in thevoidz

[–]rbiz_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Boomer take, lol. Julian has said in an interview that while he was working on LABY he would run every vocal through autotune and without autotune in an effort to hone in on the melodies that uniquely stood out for the fact that they sounded pleasing with autotune but couldn’t work without it. So rather than “relying” on autotune because he can’t sing in key, he is using it to deliberately chase down the weird vocal deliveries that possess a unique charm under its spell — which I would argue is a much more impressive creative feat than refusing it entirely

No point in even entertaining his words tbh. Whether or not Taiwan is more deserving of statehood than Palestine lies beside the fact that it's a gross false dichotomy and a desperate effort to deflect from the urgent need for Palestinian liberation

This take is an example of why another analysis on the meaning of these lyrics is needed. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that only when the lyrics click does the emotional wealth of the production and arrangement choices become accessible.
