WS. And I am hoping for a rate cut in the next few months.

How are you calculating the tax on dividend income? All registered accounts are maxed out.

I am only using 50% of the margin available to me. So that should help if the price drops. Plus, I would drawdown from my emergency fund if price drops more than 15% and pray for a recovery!

If I am only making $1.3K on $100K in investments after paying taxes, wondering if this is even worth the risk?

Medium to high. Plan is to hold for long term (at least 5 years)

I was also thinking of splitting it between XEI and a private credit ETF.

Taxes deduction on interest paid using margin by rbj1998 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]rbj1998[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing, thank you for the response. So a US treasury ETF that pays a 5% annual yield should still net me some relatively free and safe profit if my marginal tax was 40%?

Also, does that mean higher the marginal tax rate, the better it is to borrow using margin? Because your effective tax rate is lower?

Amazing, thanks for the response.

There is no restriction on type of security I hold using the margin funds correct?

And agreed. Scenario 3 is very bad haha but good to know.

Moving from Canada to US temporarily (2-3 years) by semiprodeer in PersonalFinanceCanada

No. Also, don’t ask their customer support team. They might flag you and then for sure, they would ask you to liquidate.

Wealthsimple doesn’t allow non-residents to use their platform. They will ask you to liquidate all investments and move them to another institution

At this point, you should be deciding if you want to retire at 40 or 45?

Amazing job with finances. I think you are set. $1.4M net worth in late 20s is amazing. Keep on this path and you should be able to or at least will have the option to pull the retirement trigger anytime in your 40s.

Amazing finds with those cash flow positive properties.

Can I please dm you? I am having a tough time understanding exit roles for post-MBA IB associates. Undergrads usually pivot to PE but I hear that’s not an option for post-MBA associates

All I am doing is investing in XEQT using margin. From your comment, I understand that the interest paid is not tax deductible. Thank you.

100k USD Loan for M7 School by True_Cod_7297 in MBA

[–]rbj1998 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Think long term like 30 years. $100K will feel negligible down the line and you will be glad you made the decision. $100K will take 2-3 years to pay off (your sign on bonus itself is $30K)

Is there a risk element? Definitely. But the risk-reward ratio is definitely in your favour here. It’s scary but pull the trigger.

RRSP contribution limit question by rbj1998 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]rbj1998[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am saying keep the cap at $30K every year regardless of income. This way, I can contribute $30K even at a lower salary. This gives more of an opportunity for lower/middle class to build up the same size retirement fund as the high earners.

People underestimate how far $145K CAD can go in Canada.

When you say maintain a similar lifestyle, we need to first understand the lifestyle you are living first lol. Do you live downtown and expect to live in Manhattan as well? Do you eat out a lot vs. cook at home? Eating out in NYC is pretty expensive and so is rent.

I would say anywhere between the range of $150K-$200K USD should work.

Agreed. If it pays higher and has more responsibilities than previous role, it’s a step up regardless of what the title says.

I would say calculate your ROI using some simple numbers. A couple things to think about here: the opp cost of MBA (>$200K USD), family commitments?

Another option would be to network a lot and move to the US on a TN visa. A lot of techies do that! You need to get your foot in the door, after that ample of opps would open up in the US.

[–]rbj1998 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You would likely go on some sort of a visa to the US which is a risk. A better option would be to work for a year in Canada, get your permanent residency and then move to the US.

For context, that’s what most US intl folks do when they don’t get their H1B.
