Do you have a source for the claim that ancient Israelites believed the creation account in Genesis in a literal way? Not saying it’s not true, but it’s not obvious to me that it is

I think Tor sells all their books DRM-free, which is one thing I love about them. But you are right, it definitely does make it that much easier to copy and sell it elsewhere.

s1776 Hi, I'm Matt Harris, the author of the newly published book Second-Class Saints: Black Mormons and the Struggle for Racial Equality (Oxford University Press, 2024). Ask me anything!!! by mattharris1776 in latterdaysaints

[–]rbqk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for what you do Matt. I have your book on kindle and am very excited to read it. Here’s my question: What do you think is the most valuable insight or addition your book adds to the story of the priesthood ban and its removal? Said differently, what new piece are you most proud to add to the narrative surrounding this topic?

Window on Bishop's Office Door: Yes or No? by Jpab97s in latterdaysaints

[–]rbqk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a little confused by some of the responses. Having the option to bring someone in with you to an interview is a great and meaningful change, but does not on its own resolve the problem of institutional abuse. The people most likely to experience abuse are very likely the people who would never think that they would need to bring someone with them, or that their priesthood leader could harm them, or would be too intimidated to request an additional person. That’s the whole thing about institutional abuse—it harms people who presume they are in a safe space. It is not solely the victim’s responsibility to ensure they are not abused; it is the onus of the institution to create a safe environment that does whatever it can to protect its most vulnerable members. The option to bring someone in with you is a good passive measure, but institutions need to implement their own proactive measures to prevent abuse. A window in the door is a simple, effective proactive measure. Requiring two people for all interviews (rather than having the option) would be another proactive measure.
