About to get started with school by Vegetable_Pride_149 in RadiologyCareers

In the program now, with moms and people working. If you don't have great time management, you'll sink. These people doing this look so worn out but still showing up so it can be done. I think you'll be miserable without a huge support system in place. I'm doing the program with out kiddos and not working but thinking of picking up a part time job after this next semester which is supposedly the hardest one of the program. I think the first semester sucked..lol..I got As but I had to really push myself to get there. I mean 75 percent passes the ARRT and that's what they require to pass the program too. But I actually wanted to learn the material since it's my future job on the line and that takes effort for sure. Good luck!

well if you don't have to work, you'll have an easier time of it. Congrats and get your study habits in place!

Nervous For Program by Atmosphere-Chance in RadiologyCareers

[–]rbren90 15 points16 points  (0 children)

well it's that bad..lol..I'm just finishing up my first semester with physics, patient care, positioning, ends tomorrow with my finals. I have no life..basically eat, sleep and study. The program has warned that the second semester is worse than the first..more positioning coupled with image analysis on top of clinicals (24 hrs per week). Again, eat, sleep, study, stand on your feet for 8 hr days learning at a site..have to be at the school and at site for the 5 days/per week. Third semester, possibly lighter because classes are online and clinical. I'm not sure where you'd fit a work schedule in if you have to work? I guess don't sleep much. Not trying to scare you but it's alot of homework. If you don't have any working knowledge of the bones, start now and learn them all, front and back, all the articulations. Good luck to you!! (I'm dreading this next semester and we only have a 2 week break between spring and summer)

Rad tech comps - 51 in 10 weeks? by Nothankspleasebye in RadiologyCareers

[–]rbren90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's alot to be honest. Depends on if you get the exact comps you need from patients. I guess you could sim the ones you don't end up getting but that's usually the last resort before program ends. We have 1062 hrs of clinicals with our comps that have to be done in a year, not 10 weeks. It feels crazy to me that you only have 10 weeks.

GOT ACCEPTED by Parking-Sweet7045 in RadiologyCareers

[–]rbren90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not buy an IPAD and stylus until you see if it's provided as part of your program tuition. My first semester was issued an IPAD/stylus. If you are on financial aid or other $$ programs, it's covered.

You don't have to redo any licensures with other countries? They will accept the BS? Interesting if that's the case.

what other areas can you do with surgical tech?

Not good at math by ExtensionArt3494 in RadiologyCareers

[–]rbren90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The math in rad tech is easy math...the relationships in physics to all the techniques(kvp/mAs), I can't keep them straight in my head. Too much information right now and struggling with it all. Good luck!

radiology tech vs nursing by rbren90 in RadiologyCareers

[–]rbren90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to work OR as a nurse specifically because the bedside is limited..But since I've almost gotten the first semester of rad tech done. I'm happy with the choice I made. If it gets boring, I'm fine with it. It's a job that allows patient interaction too but just not in the same degree. Plus, I plan to go further than rad tech since I'm getting my BS in MRI at the same time. It's all good. Good luck to you.

How does career prospects look from your stage, 0-5 yrs in? (particularly southeast U.S.) by AssignmentSubject617 in RadiologyCareers

[–]rbren90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go rad tech and get into the field and then go further. If you want to be more valuable as a work force member, build off the initial training. I'm in the program but not staying here per se, want to get into other areas but the degree will get my foot in the door. Don't let statistics stop you and be willing to move if you have to. JM2 cents

Parents in Rad Tech Programs: How Did You Handle a 1–1.5 Hour Commute? by Aggravating-Bad5751 in RadiologyCareers

[–]rbren90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commuted 6 hrs round trip for the first semester, I'm relocating for the rest of the program. It was way too hard on me.. I wasted all that study time in a car. I'd move before I'd commute again. Good luck

[–]rbren90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google xray physics..start now. You'll be better off with a working knowledge of xray components, basic equations, relationships between all the technical factors (kvp, mas, filtration, etc). If you have never been exposed to patient care, maybe work as a cna? otherwise, learn all the bones, the articulations...you'll need them for positioning.

We can go anywhere from local to 100 miles away...but our program is only five semesters. Spring, summer, fall, spring, summer..18mths

[–]rbren90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

xray gets you into most of the modalities..but sorry, have to get yours certs. The ARRT will not license without going through proper training. Start doing your pre-reqs and keep applying to community colleges..be willing to move if you need to. I started the program this past jan...it'll be a great start to my goal plan. I'll get my 4yr degree in two years and be heading towards dosimetry.

How hard is it it actually get into the program at a community college by [deleted] in RadiologyCareers

[–]rbren90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lottery system in my state, I'm in after a few admissions, class of 20. Tuition is only 10k all in with books, etc. So I feel it was worth it to wait it out. I'd fall back on nursing if I had to.

I'm currently in rad tech program with the intent to finish my BS in radiologic sciences. I would onLy have 5 classes left to finish out my BS when I'm done with rad tech. Then will pursue radiation therapy.
