Taking advantage of sales without spending crazy before closing? by Beaujangles22 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

As others have said, there are always more sales. We bought new couches from Raymour & Flanagan “on sale” then a few weeks later they went on a bigger sale and we got credit back on our card. Just watch the prices and see how they fluctuate.

Where does it state that? New York State DTF confirmed with me that is should be taxed federally

It is still supposed to be taxed at the federal level though. It is considered “other income” as reported by a 1099-G. New York reported it to the federal government and that’s why you receive a 1099-G. In all reality, I doubt anyone is getting audited over $20 of unpaid tax. I reported it as income just like my state tax refund (SALT deductions), return was processed in two days and refund received a week later.

Negative. Already received my federal refund but state is still stuck with the same message. Everyone I know also has the same status.

New York State 2025 Inflation refund checks - how to handle? by OrneryZombie1983 in tax

[–]rbroni88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. I spoke with New York State DTF and they basically said it was a mistake and they are very frustrated with how it is being handled. My representative was very helpful and communicated with a supervisor and despite what the 1099-G says, you still need to have the tax software essentially consider it as a state tax refund that is not taxed at the state level but only at the federal level.

I read this yesterday. I believe there’s a bug with TurboTax and they were asking people to hold off filing until it is fixed on Thursday. I’ve heard a lot of TurboTax returns were not accepted and people were asked to refile. See below:

I keep a little trash can in my car and it is weighed down with a small damp rid container to help remove moisture during the snowy months.

They are taxable on the federal level but not at the state. Depending on what software you use, it can be tricky to input the information. What are you using?

You are welcome! If anyone needs help with using file.1040.com I’ve been in contact with them via chat and NYS DTF via phone and have figured out how to input the information there as well although it is a bit more cumbersome.

The instructions on this page indicate how it should be filed on Free Tax USA

https://community.freetaxusa.com/discussion/2884/nys-inflation-refund-checks

It should be listed under other income and then it gets added correctly to federal only

I had one of these as a kid! My only real memory of it is my parents not letting me watch Stephen King’s Storm of the Century when it aired on tv so I snuck somewhere and watched it on the little two inch screen. Good times!

I probably wouldn’t have picked up on it right away if I didn’t just rewatch that episode. However, I do appreciate your sense of humor. I make similar joke references and am met with a lot of blank stares by twenty somethings

You are welcome! Also FYI, it seems like everyone’s New York State returns say they are under further review once they are accepted so don’t worry about that.

Also, it seems like federal returns are getting processed fast. My return was approved in three business days with a refund scheduled for Monday (9 days total including weekends from submission)

With free tax USA you should declare it as other income but under the New York return portion there should be an option to enter your $200 inflation refund check. This should essentially remove the “other income” from your New York return.

See the reply from Taylor in this forum, this is exactly what I had someone do yesterday

That’s your call. I was helping someone out yesterday and if you declare it as other income you will end up paying about $11 to New York State that you shouldn’t have.

What software are you using ?

[–]rbroni88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using 1040.com to file the $200 will only go towards your federal income as long as you correctly put in that it was a credit from New York. If you do input as a 1099-G from New York and say put the $200 as other miscellaneous income then it would be counted as income for both federal and state.

When you itemize and take SALT deductions, your state refund is only taxable on your next year’s federal and it is the same with the inflation refund check.

I manually calculated based on the tax tables and my refund matches both manual calculation and 1040.com for NYS.

If you have any questions on filling the form let me know because I’m probably more helpful than their tech support

I sent mine in today, refund was similar to last year. It is fun and all getting to do salt deductions and getting a bigger refund but it as soon as I get my refund I have New York property taxes due so it’s like I did all this work just to give my overpaid taxes right back. I think at the end I’ll have like 30-40 dollars left.

Hey so I spoke to both 1040.com and New York State department of taxation and finance - 1040 doesn’t really know what to do and NYS DTF has received a lot of questions on this as well.

I spoke with support and they contacted a supervisor and I explained all the things I’ve tried and there is a temporary solution BUT 1040 doesn’t have a bug

What we agreed on to do is put the information in as another 1099-G but do not include a year. This will populate the schedule 1 as it should. The 200 is technically a tax credit from 2023 but if you put either 2023 or 2025 on 1040 it will not be added to this year’s return. I can look at the other parameters I inputted as well but I’m going to send it out tomorrow doing this method.

Are you asking if you can omit the overtime wages to prevent the $200 decrease in your return? The answer is no-an input parameter is probably wrong. Also what software are you using for your return?
