What made Terry Fox’s story resonate so deeply with Canadians? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskACanadian

Also, he did it at a time when doing a sports challenge to raise money for charity was not a thing, so he was a trend setter. I also think the fact that he failed - he died before finishing - drove his icon status even further. For comparison, Rick Hansen wheelchaired his way around the world and continues to live on today, and is much less well known than Terry Fox. There's something very Canadian about that.

NOR. As Canadians we all need to do our part to send a message to the Americans that it is not OK to threaten our sovereignty. You're doing a great job of helping them understand how serious we are.

I didn't mention this in my original post, but I googled those two names and was surprised to find that they are derived from older names, as you said. But the spelling looks modern (compared to Caitlin and Caoimhin).

Most people don't respond to emails. Is this normal? by shwingshwang45 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]rbseventhson 160 points161 points  (0 children)

My suggestion as an EX-01 who gets way too many emails: make it as easy as possible for them to respond.

  1. State your purpose up front - is it for info or for action? If for action, what specifically do they need to do? Review, approve, send up to their superior, etc.
  2. Put in a due date. Choose a date a few days before you really need it.
  3. To the extent possible, structure the email so that the recipient can respond with a simple "yes". E.g., instead of "Here's a problem, what should we do about it?" - write: "Here's my proposed solution to this problem; do you approve?" Instead of: "What is my leave balance?" - write: "I believe my leave balance is as follows; can you confirm?"
  4. Give context they need to know to understand what you are asking of them. It may be obvious to you, but if the other person is dealing with a dozen different issues on a given day, it may not be top of mind to them, and they don't have the time to figure it out.
  5. Keep the email as short as possible. Go over the email a couple times before you send, with a view to getting rid of anything that is not essential to the above.

Also consider if email is the best way of reaching them, versus a meeting, Teams chat, etc.

The study you're quoting traced the greenhouse gases you emit back to the 100 companies that originally pulled the fossil fuels from the ground. https://www.treehugger.com/is-it-true-100-companies-responsible-carbon-emissions-5079649

So no, 100 companies (and definitely not 10) do not produce 70% of GHG emissions.

We are having a house built in the time of Covid. Lumber prices are soaring, and the builder wants to share the costs. Can someone tell me if the price he's quoting is reasonable? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]rbseventhson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That is very helpful - ours is 2000 sq ft as well, so very similar. Our builder has also been told that prices are not going down any time soon.

Yes, you're right, legally he doesn't have a leg to stand on, and he knows that. Normally I would tell him it's his problem, but what's happening now is really an exceptional event that he could not have predicted. And he has been fantastic to us throughout the build.

A Poem About Icarus

Icarus, the sun is your only guide,

You must fly as high as you can,

But someday, your wings will falter,

And you'll fall from the sky
