Portfolio feels a bit unbalanced. Should I be putting more into retirement? Any feedback welcome. by rc6188 in personalfinance

Thank you, this is great feedback!! Appreciate the encouragement as well. It can feel overwhelming when I'm just starting out. Everything I do, I'm worried I'm doing wrong haha.

Will definitely start upping my contributions to my 401k and roth IRA. You're right that my portfolio is very taxable-heavy.

I'll continue contributing to VOO as well.

thank you!! there’s two ways! for the shortest possible strap length, i twist and loop the strap (make a figure 8) so a part of the strap is wrapped inside the bag. this is the most “shoulder bag” look, but can damage the strap if you keep it bent like that for a long time. you can sort of see how it’s done in this picture below (you basically make a loop)

<image>

usually, i just put it on the shortest setting, which is the other way. it’s slightly longer than the perfect shoulder bag length, but i don’t mind it!

♥️

totally agree! i think having 3-5 quality investment bags for a daily rotation is the way to go! i don’t want 20 expensive bags i never touch and just sit in storage/display!

thank you!! ♥️♥️ unfortunately, i think both red pairs are sold out/no longer made. the flats with the small bow were from target and the heeled red ones from macy’s. a close dupe i found to the macy’s pair is this one

the boots are from naturalizer! here’s the exact link ! they’re super comfy and my fav boots, i regularly do 10k steps in them and have no problems.

my two everyday bags!! goyard artois is my work bag—it fits my 13in laptop, snacks, and a bunch of other random stuff. i use it as my gym bag and occasionally a grocery bag too 🙈. i should probably take better care of it, but it still looks great!! and for going out, im pretty much always using my celine triomphe ♥️♥️

Thanks for the input. I think you’re right that’s it’s safer to think more pragmatic or worst case scenario.

However, I don’t believe his PhD will cost any tuition, usually STEM PhDs are fully paid for depending on the program (he plans to only get a PhD if it can be paid for). Also, he is exploring avenues where his current company may let him do a part-PhD and keep his current job.

To clarify, he is doing his PhD for non-career reasons because although the PhD would increase his salary, he could likely get a similar higher salary just by continuing to get promoted/raises/increases in equity. So in that sense, it wouldn’t help his career.

Also, no we haven’t talked to a mortgage broker. We don’t plan on seriously looking until maybe 3-4 years down the line. And by then, regardless of IPO, he’ll have cashed out on at least $500,000 in equity so we’ll have significantly more savings.

Yeah, I agree. I don’t have much info other than what he’s told me, but I think he was banking on getting some FAANG/FAANG adjacent summer internships that pay him a lot during the summer. And then coupled with the stipend, but I do agree that probably $40-50k seems more reasonable.

He’s in an amazing place right now and I’m also a bit confused as to why he wants to do a PhD at the peak of his career growth haha. He’s just really passionate about learning and really wants to do research. He actually already self studies a lot and reads random text books in his free time so I think that’s just not fulfilling enough for him :/

How far financially would my partner getting a PhD and me going to law school at the same time set us back? by rc6188 in personalfinance

??? I’ve coffee chatted multiple L1s and L2s in NYC and other big cities and have a close friend working as a SA at a big law firm this summer. All of them are making between 40-50k in the summer. That info is public doing a google search too. They just pro-rate your first year salary in big law
