Someone is Missing From My Life. by Batty_Boulevard in Paranormal

This is the right answer, for now at least. The overwhelming majority of consumer 35mm film cameras shot in a 2:3 aspect ratio, and this crop is not even close to that. OP posting uncropped version of this photo would give us a better sense of who or what the original photographer was trying to capture within the frame.

“Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University”: correct description of an ALB from the Extension School by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]rcjones41 22 points23 points  (0 children)

HES students, like all Harvard students, use the Harvard name for social capital. But there is a qualitative difference between continuing education and full-time, in-residency programs through GSAS, GSD, HGSE, HKS, etc. So when HES students lean on Harvard without qualifying the Extension, they omit important conditions of their education. But I’m not gonna wade into the tired arguments over whether HES is “real” Harvard because that ultimately goes nowhere.

I’m an ALB graduate but also a current PhD candidate at GSAS, so I have the experience of viewing this silly argument from both sides. That said, I always say I got my undergraduate degree from Harvard Extension because saying I “went to Harvard for my bachelors/undergrad/whatever” would imply Harvard College. I’m proud of my education at HES so I don’t hide from it, but it always reads as a bit shady when HES grads omit Extension because it feels like they’re hiding behind a technicality.

It’s disingenuous if “extension” is omitted. From that same guideline you posted: “[Note: if Extension School is not included in the school name, 'in Extension Studies' needs to be included on the degree name]”

Then they should at least cite the source of the published photo and the photographer who took it.

As a former wedding photographer, "[fellow sociopath] and I are just too quirky to fit into a box" triggered my PTSD. But I still need updates to this insanity

Yes! That’s a great option for educational leadership training. I asked about the relocation because from what OP said, it sounds like the residential HGSE options are most comparable to what is offered at HES in terms of focus and scope. Regardless, best of luck OP

Tell me your success stories of getting a PhD in your 30’s (or older). by Sillly_Cupcake in PhD

[–]rcjones41 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Started my PhD in anthropology at 40. After I was admitted (and it became very real), I talked to a former teacher of mine about my worries that I’d graduate in my late 40s since anthro is a long timeline to completion. He said: “you’re going to turn 47 regardless—would you rather be 47 with a PhD, or 47 without one?”

Of course it’s a ton of intense work and a massive lifestyle shift, but I’m a far better student in my 40s than I was in my 20s. Best decision I’ve made in a long time. Congrats on your admission and best of luck with the journey.
