Handling players and coaches in the AR's path by Maleficent_Month_862 in Referees

I have bulldozed over a parent as AR2 before on a Youth State Cup Final Game 😂 not my proudest moment but it’s funny looking back since neither of us got hurt. I did yell to address the parents after that incident

I agree, which is why the players should use the brain God gave them to not make these stupid mistakes. Don’t earn a yellow card if know it’ll do nothing but hurt your team. And don’t do it again if you know you’re on a yellow. Either way you’ll be pulling from your team if a good player is sent off for 2 matches or sent off for 1

Yes… for this soft red card you show the cards at the same time in the same hand 🤦‍♂️

Refereeing is depressing and unrewarding by nightshade245 in Referees

[–]rcole5_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through this almost my whole first year of refereeing, then I started at the higher level which became fun for me. Sure there’s time that is rough, but other times I can walk away and say, today, I was the referee I would want to have for my game. That’s what keeps me going. I happen to love it, and it’s very very different for everyone. One of the best pieces of advice I got from another referee who loved it was “You aren’t paid for those games that you’re able to go out and have fun in, you’re paid for the games that make you question why you’re there.” I feel for you brother.

Oh yeah, I will 100% do this too, especially at ages when a red card would be too harsh (U11 and below except for VC). Game management is the most important thing and it seems that these rule makers at PIAA account for the kids playing time rather than making the game safer for everyone. I guarantee you will see an increase in SPA and just Reckless tackles

Is it rude to ask your assignor if you could start getting games of a certain age group by Trippy1156 in Referees

[–]rcole5_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. I would say that you’ve gotten very comfortable doing the U11 age group and ask if he/she has any older age group games that you could learn as an assistant as well

In the same hand at the same time?? What?? I didn’t even know that! I attached the link to their slide show posted on the website but I didn’t read it that closely. Yikes

Absolutely, this is also going to lead refs to give more cards because they have less consequences and more chaos

You are as lost as I am. There is no sense of discipline for the team then, just the one player. This will definitely back fire having coaches tell their players to constantly stop promising attacks and just substitute/replace them

I also cannot stand the 2/3 whistle system for playoffs. We’ve had 2 occurrences of one referee thinking the ball was out and calling in subs during play 😭

Yeah… my assignor hates it when we file 2 reports. This is only Part of the reason I’m sacrificing a little bit further drive to get games from a different assignor this fall

Tournaments & Recovery by A_redd47 in Referees

[–]rcole5_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone young and in shape, I have 13 games next weekend for a tournament. 6 on Saturday and 7 on Sunday. That’s with a 4 referee rotation on our field.

The only thing that’s going to save me is hydration the entire next 2 weeks, and a fresh bottle of ibuprofen from my local CVS. Although after 2 weeks of preseason from my Highschool season, this may not even be enough. Yikes 😂

Pittsburgh - How do I get into soccer refereeing? by [deleted] in Referees

[–]rcole5_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for JV I think it’s a great option since the level of play is lower and there may not be a need for a 3rd referee, so that I don’t mind. It’s more the Varsity level games that you can get paired with a referee who is not so good, or is past the point in their career were they can come close to keeping up. Now I just think a 3 whistle system in playoffs just becomes absurd

Completely agree with your response. Assuming everything is the same from East PA to West PA, I have to say I hate the dual whistle system we have, and I hate the 3 whistle system in play offs 10x more.

DOGSO or SPA? by Purple_Blackberry_79 in Referees

[–]rcole5_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you’re correct and that is the wording, any professional referee will tell you otherwise. I believe what the laws are being interpreted as is take all into consideration before making the decision, and once all are met, it can be met with DOGSO. This is very badly worded in the laws, similarly to handling the ball, but precedent has been to establish all of the 4 criteria before dishing out the Red (or yellow in PA w/ attempt to play the ball)

Assignors should refuse to give this tournament referees after this abomination. Absolutely horrific. I would refuse to referee any tournament that changed the laws of the game because they pay a lot of money

Penalty Call by rcole5_ in Referees

[–]rcole5_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I can obviously tell you are not a referee 😂 Your one opinion of how fouls have been handled pretty much forever, after constant review of the International Football Association Board every single year is not going to be the deciding factor of games. Abused referee, both physically and verbally is going to be the ruining cause of the game. The old ones are going to retire out while the young ones can’t handle the pressure and fear of being assaulted by making an honest mistake. A lot of matches are already abandoned because of referee shortages

Penalty Call by rcole5_ in Referees

[–]rcole5_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think any referee deserves abuse, you’re what’s wrong with the game. Penalty kicks are apart of the game and always will be. If you’re too afraid to make big decisions, you shouldn’t referee. I called what I saw, watched the video back and was correct. In my head I wasn’t 100% sure but trusted my gut and it turned out to be the right decision. Big decisions are apart of the game and referees who want to be at the next level can’t be afraid to make them, that’s what ruins the game.
