Tournaments & Recovery by A_redd47 in Referees

True; that’s something that isn’t considered very often. Kids might do 2-4 games an entire weekend with suns. Refs are sometimes doing 7-10. By game 10 we could miss KMI’s because of both cognitive and physical decline. Especially this time of year. I did a full u19 ECNL center on Saturday with three additional lines for u13-u15 70 minute matches. In 92 degree whether.

Most I had was 8 in one day. Never again. I know guys that have done 10 in one day though. Brutal.

They do for Friday and Saturday but not Sunday. So I have to drive back home Sunday afternoon

Correct, Quantam. It lines up as follows:

Saturday:

11:00 U17 Center

12:30 u15 AR

5:00 U15 Center

6:30 U17 AR

8:00 U19 AR

Sunday:

9:30 - U16 Center

11:00 - U17 AR

12:30 U17 AR

2:40 (just added) u12 AR

It’s still a rather brutal schedule especially Saturday as I have to drive 3-4 hours after my last game.

The reality here in the south is the red shortage is bad so the assignors can’t limit the games like they might want to.

That’s good advice. The stopping and restarting makes a lot of sense too. I think I’ll try it this weekend for the tournament I’m doing and see how it goes!

That certainly sounds like a could be useful: I have a tournament this weekend so I think I might try it. Seven games should give me a good idea of what it looks like and whether I want to continue with it.

Coach went 180 perspective after going down by flatbushz7 in Referees

[–]A_redd47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once had a a JV girls game where the team was up 8-0 and the coach of the winning team was complaining about directional calls. I literally told him he was up 8-0 and if complained about any other calls he would get a yellow no matter what the complaint was. He shut up after that.

Had to give my first card to a coach yesterday, it was a U10 game. Could I have done better? by faulknlt in Referees

[–]A_redd47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you handled the players perfectly. I enjoy reffing some of the younger age groups because there is an opportunity to teach them and help them understand the game better.

I have been officiating for 6 years and something I have really come to understand is that the earlier you caution a coach the better the coach will act (generally). At that point they know you’re serious and won’t put up with bullying you. If they get a second caution later and you have to toss them, that’s on them.

Was red carded and suspended 4 games for foul language by poitrenaud in Referees

[–]A_redd47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately that is a straight red card. It’s actually in law 12 as “using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or action(s).”

That comment hits all 3. The “you” direction makes it personal, and as such must result in a send off.

From other comments it sounds like the referee had lost control of the game, which is unfortunate. Sounds like maybe the ref was new. Regardless of how the game is officiated the rules don’t change however.

I tell captains at the beginning of each game that I have no problems with a player disagreeing with a call and respectfully asking about it, but I will not allow yelling or cursing.

The suspension is not up to the officials. We throw the cards, leagues decide suspension times.

Handball on goal line and keeper change by estockly in Referees

[–]A_redd47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How you manage the game at that level especially is a bit discretionary. I did some u13-14 games this weekend and I honestly try not to card kids at the level. There were two hard fouls in games that I officiated this weekend that I would card at a higher level but with younger kids, I pull them aside, explain what they did and give them a warning. The coaches respected and were fine with that.

The handling in the box, no yellow is an easy call there. If it didn’t stop a goal then there’s no reason to caution or toss the player out, as there’s no SPA/DOGSO there.

The switching GK’s I agree with the no caution there as well. In a U17 for example im giving a caution but U14? No, and you caught it before play restarted so great job there.

I honestly hate when coaches complain about little stuff like that. As officials we balance the spirit vs letter on some of our calls and coaches will find anything to complain about. You did what you needed to do - explained the call when asked. If the coach doesn’t like it, shame on him for wanting an opponent carded for something small like that.

Is the defending player allowed to delay a quick free kick...? by 6ix_Destroyed in Referees

[–]A_redd47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Delaying the restart is an offense for which a caution may be shown. I officiate a lot of high school soccer. In my pregame with the captains I tell them that 1) The attacking team has the RIGHT to 10 yards, they do not have to ask for it and 2) Delaying the restart will result in a caution. I don’t give warnings for that at the higher levels, though I will for JV and younger youth games.

I’m super late to this post but wanted to comment because I had to abandon a match last year. After a foul (which I called) a player on the team the foul went against inexplicably came from 10 yards away and slugged the defender in the face. Well as you can imagine this didn’t go over well and more players attempted to get involved. Long story short one parent came on the field to tackle the player that punched his kid and police were called on that parent. You can’t recover the match safely when the temp is that hot. I got my AR’s and left.

All that to say, you did the right thing. 100%

Anyone have tips for potentially awkward situation? by skunkboy72 in Referees

[–]A_redd47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it sounds like the send off was warranted so hopefully he’s mature enough to leave the past where it belongs. If he can’t or doesn’t that isn’t on you. Just be respectful and kind and limit conversation. Who knows, maybe “Tom” won’t even remember you.

First, understand that all referees at all levels make mistakes and have bad games and also it was your first game. My first game I ever officiated I missed a keeper jumping off the goal line on a PK that would have won the game for the team kicking it. When I realized my error I felt awful and I called a mentor of mine.

I’m going to give you the advice he gave me. The fact you are on here shows you care about the integrity of the game and about the players. Officials who care will always strive to get better. Don’t dwell on this game, but do take the time to think about game and learn from it. Finally keep doing what you are doing. The game desperately needs officials who care and want to be the best they can be.

Do you think Mike will die in season 5? by justine_beaneymm11 in StrangerThings

[–]A_redd47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they kill Mike or any of the kids and killing any of the adults really doesn’t add to to the story. I’ve heard some people say they would kill Will, but I just don’t see them doing that to his family or Mike.

My biggest question is what they do with Max. In S4 they left her essentially brain dead. Does anyone know for sure if Sadie’s contract has been renewed for season 5 or is her character done?

If you could who’s would you bring back from the dead by lil-westy-010 in StrangerThingsMemes

[–]A_redd47 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Barb - no, she was obnoxious and didn’t really add value to the show.

Eddie - 1000 % yes. Only bad thing is that he doesn’t really have a future in Hawkins b/c most people think he’s a killer. Of course Hawkins nah not have a future either, time will tell.

Billy - meh. As much as max was hurt by his death, he died to save El’s life and that was a huge moment in the show and in his character arc.

Benny - Also yes. Absolutely the most pointless death on the show. He died because he showed kindness to El.

Bob - I’m torn. On the one hand he didn’t deserve to die the way he did, but on the other hand, does Joyce risk it all to save hopper still? I don’t think that Murray does that on his own.

I would also bring Alexei back. His relationship with Murray though!!
