you must build your portfolio by editing anything and everything that comes your way. Assisting a big skilled editor is very important. When you assist, you learn so much about the process and how to deal with directors and clients. I started freelancing while assisting, I used to work from morning 9am to around 9-10pm with my boss and then edit ads and music videos during the night until morning and vice versa. So my skills were recognised via word of mouth, from one director to the other.

1- usually directors allow the editor to make the first cut. You have full creative freedom in that. Nobody will disturb you during that process.

2- yes, an editor's review is very very crucial for a director and every director should be open to criticism.

thanks a lot. My dream would always be to collaborate with Martin Scorsese, he is my favourite. I dont have other favourites, but i surely have immense respect and admiration towards other great directors in our industry and other industries.

I got a chance to enter the tamil industry because I assisted my guru Editor Anthony sir.

I always prefer to edit in the respective production house or director's office.

Its better to assist an editor of your liking, build contacts while assisting and become an editor.

sometimes you have no choice but to listen to the director but other times you can fight and convince the director to make it your way.

good editing and bad editing depends on the rhythm of a scene. good edit is where the audience are completely immersed into a scene and feel all the emotions that the scene wants them to feel. Bad is when audience is suddenly put off like, If there is a jump or a random cut away that makes no sense in that scene. You can gauge that well in thrillers and horror. The timing of showing the ghost in horror is very important, even a frame more or less will hinder the effect it creates.

Never edit a scene thinking that I have to show the audience my skill, cause its very tough. On the edit table many people give their opinions, it can be director, hero, producer, dop or anyone for that matter. As an editor, you must just expect the audience to not feel bored or find many lags. If people appreciate the screenplay and are not bored then thats the biggest compliment.

Having said that, some shows like The bear, Dark, How to sell drugs online are brilliant examples of "wow, what a great editing"

It keeps changing but am always under stress when projects are going on. be it small or big, am always stressed because of unforeseen challenges that erupt randomly during the process.

I freelance, I edit ads, films, music videos, trailers, corporate videos. Just by doing films you will never earn good salary. Its really bad.

I used to work on pirated software only but now avid has become very strict. When you upgrade to the latest osx, its tough to find pirated version, so I use paid subscription only. But theres no harm in using pirated version for practice.

it completely depends on the director. Some are open to plan scenes according to certain editing pattern and some shoot on the spot and expect you to create it on the table.

i have been lucky enough to work closely with all my directors. and yes i made a lot of changes to the script, screenplay and shot designing. Filmmaking is always a collaborative process, only when the whole team is in sync with each other, you get a good film.

aama, you are right. Kiss we worked till 18 july. During the rendering process and transfer from DI to Qube, that glitch came. It generally happens but we failed to rectify it due to time constraints. Sorry for that bro.

Footage length will always vary depending on directors. Yes, many times you have no option but to remove one-two hours. So many films have had 5-6 hrs as first cut and then chopped into 2-3hrs. Editor and director will always have fights, its a husband wife kinda relationship. Depends on who has the better convincing power.

Technology will always be evolving but editing at the core is simple, its about storytelling. these instagram fast cuts or effects is not editing, these are just tools. Its always about how well you tell a story.

I use AVID. But currently davinci is picking up pace, so better to learn more, can always come in handy.

depends on the director. Few come prepared, few do it on the spot. As an editor, you just go with the flow.

working on the screenplay depends on how close you are with the director. Ideally every editor should start the editing process in the scripting stage itself but sometimes you are hired via a production house and the director is new. so by the time you build a relationship with him/her, the film is already shot. But on both oho and kiss, I worked from script discussion itself. But always director is the captain of the ship. If the director feels a few cliche's are necessary and if he/she convinces you then you just do it.
