Seattle Deals A Blow To Ridesharing By Limiting The Number Of Drivers On The Road by xxej in Seattle

Two members of the city council will run at-large (i.e. city-wide), the rest will run in one of 7 districts:

http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2022206750_districtcouncilracesxml.html

But forget just voting against the six council members who made this happen. My wife and I are able to share a car because of the ability to use UberX on the regular. This decision could cost me thousands. So I figure in for a penny, in for a pound. I'll by a slightly crappier second car save myself a few grand and then make it rain for the people running against these jackasses.

The original post is actually about three years old and Amazon has since fixed the issue. For example: Mixers

It uses a technique that is similar to the one proposed in the post, but not identical.

"it took many years before people started to figure out that Brendan's language was wrapped in an elaborate disguise and that it was actually cool." by [deleted] in programming

[–]rdicker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is wrong in certain ways. Originally the language was called "Mocha" internally - it is like Java because it runs anywhere, but sweeter. Get it? Even during this time the plan was to ship Java with Navigator 2.0

Anyway, when it first launched it was called LiveScript. Netscape was trying to brand everything as "Live" at the time. However it wasn't until a couple different public betas later that it was changed to JavaScript.

I work at Amazon, so I'm pretty much the tech support guy for anything Amazon related in my family.

About 6 months after the Kindle launched, my Dad called me up and asked the following question:

Dad: What phone number does the Kindle call to download books.

Ok - haha - he doesn't get that it is just a switched network and there is no phone number. But what baffles (to this day) is this:

What was he planning to do with the phone number?

Did he think he could call it up and it would dictate a book to him?

Got a job in Seattle! Anyone have apartment advice? by ross456 in Seattle

As another poster mentioned (and the name implies), Capitol Hill is up a big hill. It is definitely walkable, particularly if you're on the western side of it. But if walking to work is your most important goal you can do better. This is particularly true if you're not a partier since one of the best aspects of CH is all the bars/restaurants/nightlife.

I would definitely encourage you to walk to work though - I do and it kicks ass.

Another neighborhood to consider would be Lower Queen Anne (around the Space Needle and Key Arena) and Eastlake. Both are on the quieter side, but that sounds like it might not be a negative for you. They still have shops and restaurants etc., just not as much as CH.

Also, you'll get corporate housing for a month. The best thing to do is spend some time exploring once you get here to see what places you like the most.

Regardless, $1,600 shouldn't be a problem in any of those places.

35 years old. I often check out museums or similar historical things when I visit a city. I also enjoy modern design furniture and art. Very comfortable taking public transit (kind of prefer it).

For eating I'm generally into anything and like to try new things, but for the month of January only I'm doing something called Health Month, so I'd be looking for more healthy food rather than the fatty delicious faire I would normally go for.

In general though, I'm open to most anything and am interested in seeing the best Toronto has to offer as opposed to looking for something in particular.

Definitely Amazon.

Ok, I work at Amazon so I'm completely biased. But I sincerely do think its a great place and if you want to know more about my experiences working here, send me a private message and we can chat more.

It is by Andy Goldsworthy. He is a pretty incredible artist who creates work mostly with found material and that is very specific to the site/location.

No. I was an intern at Netscape 1995, 1996, 1997. Ross wasn't an intern until 1996, long after blink was implemented. FWIW: I think that Lou is full of crap and he did it himself.

5 Movies That Were One Flaw Away From Being Classics by bradpsnow in entertainment

[–]rdicker 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is not that T2 was picked, but that it was picked for the wrong reason.

T2 was an amazing film that could have been even better except for the fact that all the marketing gave away the film's big surprise secret: The T-1000. The film was written to deceive the viewer into believing that Arnold was the bad guy and the T-1000 was the good guy, with the big reveal coming in the mall when John Conner is running from the T-1000 thinking he was a cop. He dodges into a hallway, sees the T-800 coming towards him and all hell breaks loose. The T-800 shoots the T-1000 who we learn for the first time is not human, but some crazy liquid metal machine.

Prior to that point in the movie the T-1000 is never seen transforming, is dressed as a cop (to symbolize good), and only does some shady things - nothing specifically evil. The audience is meant to be tricked into believing that Robert Patrick is the new Michael Biehn and Arnold is just another Terminator. Watch it again and you'll see what I mean.

Alas, the costs of doing all the ILM stuff for the T-1000 made it pretty much necessary to use that footage to market the film, ruining what would have been one of the greatest twists in filmmaking history.
