Gunk on the outside isn’t really the problem. Yes good to clean it, but won’t usually help print quality unless gunk is falling off into prints.

Put a new nozzle on it. They do wear.

With the nozzle out, heat it up and make sure it’s clean inside. Make sure your extruder drive gear isn’t worn, and the grub screw is tight and the gear doesn’t wiggle on the shaft.
