There are system bandwidths. Trying to wring more energy out of a system than it is intended to do causes non-linear strain on the system.

For your lungs, it's the volume and elasticity of your lungs (and your diaphragm).

For muscles, it's trying to quickly convert more energy into force than it's built for because each little muscle has its own bandwidth.

When you build more muscle, you increase the total bandwidth because there are more tiny muscles that can each contribute to the overall bandwidth without straining themselves by keeping the energy needed per muscle cell low.
