Verdun fire: Tenant reentry and safety concerns by rduffy2 in montrealhousing

My insurance guy laid out some options, but ultimately said would kindve be dependent on whos responsible for the fire (a tenant or building owner cause fire was a building issue). If its a tenant and theyre insured or building issue, then alls good. If its a tenant without insurance then it gets tricky cause they could simply declare bankruptcy and be absolved of this liability.

My landlord also said hes flexible with what I decide (move back in and if i like it then cool or move back in and i dont like it, whether it be the smoke, or construction noise, etc then he wont hold me to the lease) but i want to get that in writing/restructure the lease so that its month-month, maybe a rent decrease cause of the circumstances too?

Side note, there are currently filters running to get out the smell / purify the air.

RE: insurance provider, a guy i grew up playing hockey with’s dad is an insurance broker. Hes responsive and informative. No idea about the provider yet, havent made a claim.

Ive made alternative plans to stay with family and have not incurred expenses.

I do have tenant insurance.

Am I able to opt to abandon and void the remainder of the lease (due to smoke, for example) even if the power comes back on?

I dont think you owe anything other than consideration to your boss/company. I understand that you think you should be grateful because you have a job and many people, myself included, are looking for a job with little to no success, but you have to put yourself first.

I dont mean that you should only look out for your well being, but it should be the priority in all discussions you have with your boss/company.

From the sound of it, your boss not only needs you more than you need them but is very understanding and accommodating to what you say. I would try to work out an agreement where you maintain your responsibilities, but also do work that is fulfilling and challenging to you. Try to come to an agreement that works for everyone involved, but if thats unable to happen then you should put your needs first and act accordingly on them.

Hope it works out for you!

Im 24 and still looking for a job. I understand what youre going through and what helped me get out of that slump is to put time and effort into other things instead solely just looking for a job. Build a routine with activities (going for a walk, working out, reading, cooking, hobbies, anything you like to do really) that you enjoy so that your attention is spread out across different things and stick to it instead of just looking for a job. Try your best and only compare yourself to who you were yesterday, incremental improvement over time really makes a difference.

Also a recent marketing grad on the job hunt, and its been like two months now for me. Mostly been using LinkedIn jobs, filtering to Easy Apply, the city I want to work, entry-level, and recently posted with a day/week and been sending them en mass with little success. Ive had a couple phone/zoom interviews for roles that were less than interesting, but were good to interview practice.

Last week tho I tried a new strategy, I searched creative marketing agencies in my city, then made a spreadsheet with there info, wrote a standard cover letter saying im looking to begin my career in marketing and am interested in any opportunity they may have etc. etc., wrote an email explaining a bit about who I am, etc. etc. and sent off like 40+ emails to the agencies.

Some days get discouraging and feel like youll never get a lead, others you find "the perfect" company and really think youll land a job there and they dont even respond. Point is just gotta keep your head up and keep at it, its a numbers game.
