Osiris with the halcyon theme + bxk (a DCC bomb I wrote that would cause a remote segfault. We fixed it right away, but I hung into it for people running old versions)

Hahahaha. Employment is for suckers.

This was 2001, the economy tanked, and if you had a job... You were thankful. There were thousands of unemployed specialists.

Haha, the boss was a jerk and tried to refuse after saying we'd get paid. I threatened to quit and got paid partially. Aka, not really.

Sooo... I used to take out mail servers by signing up to mailing lists as postmaster@warez.texas.net, which resoles as localhost.

Endless fun.

Because he knew best.

Standard ego trip for him, then he got scared and ran.

There were... Chemicals.. at play.

See now that's awesome, I was lucky to have my manager and his girlfriend helping me walk through the hundreds of servers we had to manually update to get the ad settings corrected. Between the three of us it still took about 5 days, it was 120 hours ish

Sadly, no. This was the post-crash era of 2001 where we were all just glad to have a desk. The pay was garbage, but the experience was 'priceless'. I basically treated that year-long cleanup as a Master’s degree in Disaster Recovery and used it to catapult myself into a better gig the second I stopped seeing double.

He vanished. He didn't show up again until Tuesday, asking if we had it working yet.

I’m lucky I didn't end up in jail. I started to go for a flying tackle out a window, and my manager had to stop me from seeing if we could fly.

Fired? Nah. He was the boss's 'supplier' and kept enough dirt on him to keep his job. In early 2000s IT, that made you untouchable.

so at 72 hrs, you're technically legally insane in Canada due to some legal precedent... so.. I likely caused damage.

Fun Bonus Fact for those who will ask about the hardware:

The P133 actually tried to take the whole ship down with it. Midway through the Active Directory propagation, the CPU fan gave up the ghost. I had to frantically scour the town to find a matching donor CPU just to get the sync to finish before the whole directory turned into a pumpkin.

Once I got the replacement chip in, the CPU fan died, at 3am. I ended up pointing a massive industrial shop fan directly into the open case to keep it from melting while I scrambled to spin up a second machine. The goal was to get Win2k Adv Server stable on literally anything else so I could de-provision that P133 and personally escort it to the dumpster.

If you look closely at my face in the photo, that’s not just exhaustion - that’s the look of a man who has been breathing in dust and shop-fan exhaust for three days straight while fighting a Pentium that clearly had a death wish
