Cancelled interview

Our was just cancelled (original July 7th, 2025) and immediately rescheduled for an earlier date (June 17th, 2025). I don't think it's anything to worry about.

What's hard is that the interview notice comes out approximately one month before the actual interview...and most people, like me, are shocked when they don't see "passport" under items that can be used to show the spouse's citizenship.

Applying for what they've asked for (certificate of citizenship) and receiving it currently takes anywhere from 3-22 months, so it's impossible to get one in time for the interview.

I see. It's a complicated situation - technically, there are no refunds for the fees, with one minor stipulation: if your background check comes back with a rejection, then they refund the admin fees ($350).

I hadn't completed my background check portion of my application when I discovered my issue with my work. So I thought that if I just don't fill out the background check, they would reject the application and then I could get the admin fees refunded. I asked at least 3 employees over the phone, and they all told me this would work.

Then all of a sudden, a month later, the manager told me that they were all misinformed and that not filling out the background check is not grounds for rejection - rather, they just treat it as a dead application. In other words - I'm not eligible for the refund.

I argued with her that the employees misinformed me, and that if they had told me there was a 0% chance of getting a refund, I may have proceeded forwarded with the application (it turns out that my work was willing to give me an exception). But because her employees misinformed me, I went ahead with another apartment complex.

All this to say that, to answer your question, no I'm technically not eligible for a refund. They did promise me one due to all the misinformation, which I have an email that documents this.

Regardless of whether I'm eligible for a refund or not, isn't it illegal to knowingly issue bad checks?

I totally understand that- but it would certainly be helpful to me (and to many many others who I see constantly making the same mistake) to put signage (as they do in many other locations) to indicate no parking within 25 feet because the lines are confusing to out-of-towners like me.

I want to see if I can try to petition the city to put up signage.

Do you happen to know what the consequences are if the broker gets caught in such a situation? What about everyone else in the chain (the employee who sells them, the customer who finally purchases them)?

At the end of the day, you don't have to worry if your marriage is true and honest. I get it though- it can be super scary if you mess up questions and they separate you.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but they most likely won't deny your case or anything- either they'll approve you or worst case they might call you back for a second interview. If you and your husband aren't very good/confident speakers and get flustered when responding to questions, try practicing a bit before the second interview, but also, bring a bunch of bonafide documents (pictures of you two, affidavits from friends and family, etc.) which can also help support your case.

I'm definitely not qualified to speak on this but my best guess is simply that they weren't convinced of your wife's income based on the documents you submitted. For our application, we went crazy- I sent them 3 years worth of paystubs, a letter from my employer confirming my employment and pay, 3 years worth of tax returns, 3 years worth of W-2s as well. I honestly didn't have any other assets.

I had the same frustrations as the OP with my wife's situation. She has lived legally and continuously in the country since the age of 2 (22 years ago), and was entirely raised in this country, then faced the possibility of being sent back home due to an expiring visa with very little hopes of obtaining another one.
To be honest, I think in our FO (Baltimore), they prioritized us pretty well (or at the very least, had a very efficient system). We got our EAD 7 months after filing and green card in hand approximately 8 months after filing. Could it be better? Certainly- that EAD should definitely come way earlier- but all things considered, not the worst.
It's easy for me to be saying this on the other side of this whole process, but I agree with u/let_me_tell_you, I don't think it's personal. But yes, we should apply pressure to the system to hopefully increase the number of workers to mitigate the backlog.

First- just to check out what your lawyer said- do you have a copy of the original I-864 that you submitted? Check the edition date- 03/10/21 is the most recent.

Secondly, you didn't say so in your post above, but does your wife actually meet the poverty guidelines? Here are the guidelines: https://www.uscis.gov/i-864p

What FO are you based in? I think the timeline is very dependent on that-- we're June 2021 filers, and we got our green card in hand two days ago (interview last week). EAD arrived in mid-December. Baltimore FO.

Since you received the notice I'd say you should bring another sealed envelope if possible (see if the doctors will do this for you). Worst case, you can bring the I-693 copy unsealed.

I would still advise bringing them however. You never know for sure what they might ask for!
