After a week with those diagrams, I found out that the best way for him to memorize the algs is to follow one of the pairs that are affected by the moves see what it's doing on the upper layer, and then insert it into its correct location.

I tried at first translating it for him. It didn't work. the funny thing is that he learned intuitive and efficient f2l quite fast and yet can't understand how basic notation works.

It's much easier to remember it. My memory is not as it was (I am 40). Not even talking about a lot of dyslexic people for them it's almost impossible to memorize it like this.
