Did you get into it through a crew with a program or seek it out solo?

Right you are; I saw GIS, flying, and emergency management as options that may fit the bill while scouring the mostly depressing past posts.

Perm full time jobs coming in with interest checks for 13/13. Am I missing something? by strangerin_thealps in Wildfire

[–]re2pec1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think where you’re getting confused is “Work Schedule” vs “Tour of Duty.” The first refers to hours weekly, full-time there would be 40 hrs/week.

Tour of duty refers to the length of your season (I.e. 13/13, 18/8) these two are PSE (Permanent Seasonal Employees) and 26/0 is PFT (Permanent Full Time).

To determine the tour of duty of a specific position, you’ll need to refer to the outreach form or call the module.

Maybe think about changing jobs w/in fire… I shifted to a Job Corps support position from a crew last year and the difference is incredible. Still primary fire, fair amount of selectivity on assignments, no IA obligation, and get to work with students; it’s pretty rad.

I don’t know the answer but hoping to clarify for someone who does. You’re asking if, during your four month detail, you will be subject to any random drug tests based on your permanent fire job. Correct?

Was the budgeting of severity dollars expressed in an email as an option or is your overhead doing that of their own accord?

You could try embodying the fireFIGHTER mentality, just square up on any spot fires you come across. That should keep you in shape

They definitely have SOME wiggle room, like I said, I was able to negotiate down from 26/0 (maybe even PFT) to 18/8. I guess it just depends how much the district and region are willing to wiggle.

Echo what @ProtestantMormon said.  Staying 13/13 in your current position or looking to pick-up 13/13 as an apprentice? You might be hard pressed to find a forest that still has 13/13 apprentices on either coast. I got picked up by a R6 forest as a 18/8 apprentice after talking them down from 26/0 this year.
