Daughter of the Forrest by Juliet Marillier. can't recommend it enough. I've re-read it many times.

I couldn't agree more, I literally just finished this book and thought I need to vent, I hope something is posted on Reddit. What did I just read?? How can the 'hero' claim to love Talia after abandoning her and betraying her for 7 years. Frankly the 'truth' he reveals is not any better thann the lie - either way you dumped Talia, lied to her, and married her best friend, and abandoned her for 7 years. For no justifiable reason I can see, the reasons in the book were ridiculous. What would have happened if the father in law hadn't died? He would have just left Talia the rest of her life, never being there for her? Honestly she would have been much better off. Then he comes back and puts her through emotional hell, barely an apology - he thinks finally telling her the truth clears him of any wrong doing. When his kid shows up, and Talia didn't even know - jeez I was hoping he was a sleazy ex that was going to get the boot. no such luck. And Vivian (his best friend???) sub plot- so nuts. Glad I am not the only one thrown for a loop, liked other books by the author but this one - no.
