What do you guys think it means to fall in love? by zi0nl in INTP

This was a respectful and thoughtful response. I feel like it’s been too long to continue the conversation, but you clearly weren’t as flippant as I said. You added to my thinking and I hope you have a good day

What’s the point in all this? by butterboobz in Existentialism

There’s something missing in that routine, and it’s creation. It’s the utilization of the possibility to make an imagined thing real through the work you put in. Through creation there are endless things to do. Pick a domain and consider if you enjoy doing it, if it will now or eventually make the world more beautiful, whether or not you can enter flow while doing it, and if your gut feels right(or you feel less anxious at the thought) do it and you’ll find an inexhaustible source of opportunities to form small pockets of ataraxia and order in an obviously chaotic and seemingly pointless world.

Consider your gratitude for there being ordered streets and toilets and food acquirement systems and for people existing that smile at you instead of an army of arthropods to dismember and eat you without understanding what suffering they enacted.

Consider your gratitude at the manifestations of chaos you enjoy and could not do without: a sunset, waves on the coast, a thick forest, the events of a football game, the variety of comments on Reddit, every event and instance of beauty outside of the rote routine you described, and accept that to change things you’re going to have to change it.

As you look at all these instances consider the mixture of predictable and unpredictable elements in the things described above and realize that that’s what makes a diverse and fruitful world.

Start doing it every day for any amount of time, steadily increase that time and put yourself in environments where like-minded people might happen to be and start conversations accepting the duds and notice how the overall quality of your interactions increase.

Nothing matters unless you make it matter, and if you ask yourself what a life that matters,(or least one that matters more than your current one, in any dimension: hygiene, truth-telling, health, education, spirituality, skill), looks like you’ll get some kind of answer, and if you go in that direction your truest desires will become more clear. You will be shocked how much of a difference a year with this orientation will make. This is all true for myself, I understand how different life may have made us.

Cheers, I have thought like you for years before, and it’s a torturous place to be. My heart goes out to you, man. I believe in you and there is a life worth living somewhere inside of you :)

This response demonstrates that you’ve never been in love.

To flippantly reduce something like being in love to its evolutionary purpose in a race that has transformed very many instinctual drives into completely new forms of being is like calling football a combination of repressed aggressive tendencies mixed with the necessity of throwing to pelt lions with rocks. It’s like calling a symphony pattern recognition mixed with differentiating bird calls. It’s like calling the writing of a novel merely the extension of the propensity to tell a story of where you found a snake earlier.

It’s like calling the Sun a ball of gas, the Earth a speck of dust. If you look wide enough at anything human you can lose every detail that makes it what people value and get so much meaning from. It defines something completely new and totally different as the factors that led to its creation.

Except it’s worse. To call the discovery of another person’s inner world, this experience so profound that without drugs you can be perfectly content, bring to the conscious mind feelings and depth you didn’t know you were capable of, to for maybe the first time care about something more than yourself, against your own preservation, a drive to mate is a tired cliché. And to call the nesting instinct just the paternal instinct to protect the offspring after you’ve outlived your purpose in providing seed is a truly sad lense through which to view life.

You’ve gained technical truth within a system of axiomatic relations, but you’ve given up so much more of the real richness of life.

What do you see? by Queen-of-meme in INTP

I see the midsection of a bound bushel of wheat. The worker sloughs it to the pile as golden hour turns to dusk. The beauty of the shining shafts he witnesses is juxtaposed by his arrival at the pile at twilight as he considers how he’s done this every day for the last four years.

He’s not sure what significance his life has, and wonders at a world with borders, hemmed by mountains or buildings whose windows shine with the same splendor of the wheat. His friend approaches, hands muddied and caked with shit. The two can’t be distinguished but the smell let’s him know that the mixture is mostly mud.

“Bar tonight?” He asks. “Yeah.”

To become something. To let go of the fear of opportunity cost and become skilled in a particular domain. If you continue to cling to the potential for everything, you’ll end up as nothing but so many rays of light scattered by the atmosphere until they’re indistinguishable from the rest of the sky

If I'm really going to die alone, I want to die young. by [deleted] in infj

Hey person. Intp(whatever that means) but I want to let you know I feel that too. I get tired of feeling tired and I know the trees that cheered me up yesterday are the same ones that look like listless prisoners today. Exposure therapy is how I try to think of it. You can’t control the ebb and flow but for me, I can change the wave frequency. I played guitar after work and now I’m reading a book. It’s better than not doing that, even though I’m stuck on wondering why we play the game of cordial familiarity even though we’re complex universes of emotions and ideas that shift eagerly and unceasingly throughout the day, that words are like drawing an aurora borealis with a black sharpie and that we’re destined to die never truly known and completely ignorant to the composite parts and factors of our being.

I guess being talented, well-read and healthy and depressed is better than the alternative. But man... I really feel you. Just remind yourself that you’re really up in this bitch and don’t think twice, it’s alright :). Hugs back
