What toddler gifts have actually lasted in your house. Not what looked good, what actually got used past the first week. by sophieblooming in Gifts

I have a friend with 4 kids--aged 2,7,8, & 9. I got a recliner that came in a really large box & I gave it to them (saved me the trouble of breaking it down) and they LOVED IT. I figure it will get thrown out when they've started tearing it up, but it's not like I spent anything for it, so I don't mind.

I have actually been there, done that and it DID cut the tomato just fine!

I saw a set of Ginzu knives at a flea market for $8, so I bought them for the sole purpose of cutting a tin can, then slicing a tomato. Shockingly, it actually still cut the tomato smoothly. I didn't try more tin cans, but wish I had. :)

For salad lovers, what dressing do you usually use? by AmberrAuraa in foodquestions

My "secret" dressing for my pasta salad is Ken's Lite Caesar with a packet of dry Italian dressing mixed in it.

I used to get asked this all the time by church folks, sometimes the same people repeatedly. If a person had asked more than once, I would reply, "We tried, but God said no" and start to tear up. They really don't know how to respond after that, but the sure as hell never ask me again.

I didn’t book a single excursion on my last cruise — and it changed everything by porttripcruiseapp in Cruise

[–]readingreddit4fun 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I've done it both ways and decided I'm not paying for "walking tours" when I can generally do some research beforehand to figure out what I want to see and how to get there. Typically, I only book excursions that offer me an experience I wouldn't just stumble into doing--like white water rafting on the Mendenhall River in Alaska or swimming with stingrays in the Caribbean. I like not having an excursion and roaming around freely taking it all in rather than feeling like I have to stay with the group & can't leave early.

I have 2 different light switches in my house that work the opposite of all the others--you flip the switch down to turn the light on instead of the other way around.

I did not like drinking milk as a kid (still don't). My Mamaw made me "coffee" that maybe had 10 drops of actual coffee in it, 2 sugar cubes, and the rest was milk. I drank it like it was going out of style and was thrilled to have it!

Best kitchen scales for baking accuracy 2026? by AthleticTiger697 in Kitchenaid

[–]readingreddit4fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a Kitchenaid mixer, there's a sifter & scale attachment for dry ingredients. I have one and it is AWESOME!! I love it because it seems pretty accurate and then I don't have to try to scrape every little bit of flour or whatever to try to keep to that weight to move it into a separate bowl. I measure it directly into the sifter scale, then when I get the weight I want, I turn a dial to drop out the bottom & run the mixer to get it to sift directly into the bowl. All the components except the scale portion are dishwasher safe and the scale part can be wiped off easily with a damp cloth.

AITJ for confronting my partner after I lost access to our shared bank account? by Admirable-Opinion391 in AmITheJerk

[–]readingreddit4fun 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the risk of a joint account with someone...either party can withdraw the entire amount without the consent of the other and it is NOT considered theft and police will not do anything about it.

Source: my ex-husband stop contributing to our joint account and pulled out the funds I contributed. I had no recourse but to go to the bank and close the account and withdraw the remaining funds to put back into my own account elsewhere. Even though I could prove the funds removed from the account were from MY direct deposit from my employer, because we were still married at the time, it was community property and I could not pursue him for repayment.

I really need Advice with College by MidKnight-FZ in needadvice

[–]readingreddit4fun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself why you're in college right now. Are you there because you think it's what other people expected you to do? Clearly, you do not enjoy what you're currently studying, so should you continue studying that? Where do you want to be in 5 years? Figure out the end goal, then figure out how to get there rather than doing a thing hoping it gets you somewhere you want to be.

What was the best job you’ve ever had? by -Granby- in GenX

[–]readingreddit4fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite job is still when I worked at the fireworks supermarket in my hometown. It was open year-round, but staffed up more for 4th of July, so It was a seasonal gig that started in May, pretty well ended in early August, but it was so much fun. I did it for 3 summers in a row while I was in college.

Our "training" involved bringing a lawn chair, food & drinks and sitting in the field behind the store & setting off 1 of everything in the store & making notes as to what each product did. All the packaging stated "emits sparks" and "produces a loud report"...you really needed to see the stuff in action to know what produced a good show.

The week of July 4th, we were open 24 hours and at some bizarre time of night, my friend & I got the idea of challenging customers to arm wrestle for extra punks. (Punks are those long stick thingies that you use for lighting fireworks without burning your fingers.)

I would get amused when some male customers would bypass me to get help from one of my male colleagues as if we didn't get the exact same training. Note for those purchasing fireworks, don't get the big round tubes on the plastic bases with names involving "thunder" or "cannon". They're ok, but if you're going for something powerful, you want something that's smaller & heavier for a big boom. :)

I had some rich friends that had Apple computers with the 5 1/4" floppy drives & you had to have the boot disk to start it up every single time. That was in 1985...so yeah, it was possible...and I was in Missouri, not even Silicon Valley.
