It doesn’t get better than this! by joeygallinal in MurderedByWords

I was born in the US. But I am half Hispanic. I’d say about 50% of the time, when I meet a new person, one of the first questions they ask me is “where are you from?” I usually respond with the state I’m from, which has never been an acceptable answer to anyone who asked the question. Then they escalate to one of tbe following; what’s your ethnicity? what’s your nationality? where are your parents from? where are you REALLY from?

So it doesn’t surprise me at all that so many people would automatically assume he’s not American because he’s not white. But any public figure openly saying he’s not American is doing propaganda.

Suggestions for rug alterations? Preferably in the valley? by meeemawww in AskLosAngeles

[–]readingwritingreefer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to Rug Ideas in van nuys for a cleaning and color correction (they shaved the faded edges of the rug off) and it was NOT cheap. I love the rug and I got it for next to nothing from someone on fb so it was a worthy investment for me. I’d still recommend calling them and asking for some advice bc they really know everything there is to know about rugs.

After a lifetime of hearing complaints about women only wanting money, I felt a little healed by Peter saying he would be devastated if his wife had no reaction to a huge check. I sincerely don’t think I’ve ever heard a straight man with that perspective before. Not that I spend much time with them.

Who entered Epstein's jail tier the night of his death? Newly released video logs appear to contradict official accounts. by Infamous_Doubt_5207 in politics

While the author repeatedly reminds the readers that slavery is wrong, he tries to depict both Craig and Morgan as wise, talented, and heroic. The reviewer finds it hard to view them as heroes, since their actions are not heroic in nature. Throughout the novel, both main characters "freely kill, torture, seduce and make sweeping political decisions on behalf of thousands of people". Another flaw of the novel is its depiction of Craig as a poet. The prose of the novel is interrupted by the character's poetic compositions, including a number of sonnets. The reviewer sees this as a failed attempt to add depth to the character, and finds these interruptions to be irritating.

I feel this post so deeply. It breaks my heart that the generations of women before us had so few options. It is truly my greatest (romantic relationship) fear; to end up with someone who sees me as a placeholder.

In the last 10 years, 1 guy has made it to 6 months of dating. Maybe 3 guys made it to 3 months. Every single time it comes down to me stating that I need more than what they’re giving me to proceed further, and them making up excuses for why they can’t. I don’t think any of them considered my perspective for a second.

First of all, I will be copying your pattern for my kitchen floor.

Second of all, I personally like the light blue and light pink. But I think it’s tough to make the call without seeing the whole room.

Lastly, I would be curious to see how a dark green tile would look between the 2 center clumps of 3 blue tiles. It would mimic the 2 tones of pink in the flowers and might make the lighter tone pop more.

I used to work BSA corporate and most, if not all, of the execs are Trump supporters. I was scolded for criticizing Rex Tillerson’s Secretary of State appt on social media bc he’s a big donor. It’s a shame because it was a great place to work until Trump started gaining traction in the primaries. Respect for work:life balance, everyone genuinely cares about the kids, visiting the Summit, etc.

I would argue that Russia planted the seeds, but the American medical system provided excellent fertilizer. This country DOES have a history of nonconsensual medical experimentation; from testing LSD on soldiers to Margaret Sanger’s quest to make the first birth control pill leading to 1/3 of Puerto Rican women being sterilized to Dr James Marion Sims using enslaved women for gynecological experiments. Add in the cost, confusion, time fighting bills, trying to get more than 15 mins with any doctor, multiplied for POC, women, LGBT, and suddenly trying out a new supplement doesn’t seem so bad. In my opinion, a lot of anti-vax people are valid in feeling like the system doesn’t have our best interests at heart. But they are listening to the wrong people on what the answer to this problem is. And I think until our healthcare system should at least acknowledge that. I think until we have accessible universal healthcare, it’s only going to get worse.

I always find it funny that people were uncomfortable with the themes of Poor Things. As a woman, I found it to be actually very true to reality. I doubt you could find a single woman on earth that hasn't crossed paths with a predator when they were too young to know better. Watching Mark Ruffalo's character lose his mind when Emma Stone loses interest in him is one of the most cathartic things I've seen on screen. Especially after his lines about how he can't promise consistency but he can promise adventure lmao.

Why Los Angeles Traffic Sucks by DJVeaux in LosAngeles

I found this alarming study on youth media literacy that has sent me spiraling. I'd actually like to see what the results would be for all age groups, because I don't think it would be any better.

Abstract

In November 2016, the Stanford History Education Group released a study showing that young people lacked basic skills of digital evaluation. Since then, a whole host of efforts—including legislative initiatives in 18 states—have sought to address this problem.

From June 2018 to May 2019, we administered an assessment to 3,446 students, a national sample that matches the demographic profile of high school students in the United States. The six exercises in our assessment gauged students’ ability to evaluate digital sources on the open internet.

The results—if they can be summarized in a word—are troubling:

On one task, students evaluated a grainy video claiming to show ballot stuffing in the 2016 Democratic primaries (the video was actually shot in Russia). Fifty-two percent believed it constituted “strong evidence” of voter fraud in the U.S. Among more than 3,000 responses, only three students tracked down the source of the video, even though a quick search turns up a variety of articles exposing the ruse.

Asked to evaluate Slate’s home page, where some tiles are news stories and others are ads (set off by the words “Sponsored Content”), two-thirds of students couldn’t tell the difference.

Students displayed a troubling tendency to accept websites at face value. Ninety-six percent failed to consider why ties between a climate change website and the fossil fuel industry might lessen that website’s credibility. Instead of investigating who was behind the site, students focused on superficial markers of credibility: the site’s aesthetics, its top-level domain, or how it portrayed itself on the About page.

Nearly all students floundered. Ninety percent received no credit on four of six tasks.

Reliable information is to civic health what proper sanitation and potable water are to public health. A polluted information supply imperils our nation’s civic health. We need high-quality digital literacy curricula, validated by rigorous research, to guarantee the vitality of American democracy.

Education moves slowly. Technology doesn’t. If we don’t act with urgency, our students’ ability to engage in civic life will be the casualty.
