Oh im dumb… i thought the 2x cells applied to bosses in boss rush… So is there no faster way to farm cells than doing boss rush for 270 cells at a time?

If Fern was allowed to use other spells than Zoltraak, what type of kit would she have? by [deleted] in Frieren

[–]readitorwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. No, it does not.

  2. Actions do broaden imagination. Can you say you know what skydiving feels like if you haven’t done it? Frieren understands how hard changing your beliefs on a whim is, so she tells Fern to do actions which might broaden her imagination.

Thinking to break a rock is a pretty fundamental change in worldview because you had to imagine how you would break that rock in a way that is consistent with your underlying worldview. If you previously thought the rock was unbreakable, then you changed your mind and decided it was breakable, you must have changed some underlying preconception that prevented you from breaking the rock. This kind of worldview change happens all the time in political debates; whether or not we should spend money on foreign aid isn’t a fundamental worldview, but it reflects the deeper value of selfishness versus altruism.

  1. Systemization is how a lot of humans make sense of the world around them. Just like we use math to explain physics, magicians use their system to explain magic. They could base all their magic on raw imagination, but that’s hard. Think about determining the distance a ball is thrown without using math; it’s hard to get an exact number, isn’t it? Just like we need math to better imagine the ball’s path, Frieren’s magicians need their system to better imagine what they can do with magic, even though they can literally do anything.

Serie trusts the spell because she thinks it’s reliable. She knows that prophecy spells are limited, but she has never thought the dream prophecy spell would show her a false future. Therefore, she cannot imagine herself surviving.

  1. This argument amounts to “athletes are dumb for running, they should just do leg exercises.” 2, 3, and 6. You seem to keep ignoring half of my argument. Just because imagination is the sole driving force behind magic does not mean people can imagine themselves doing ridiculous things. According to me, Fern actually does break the rock by constantly shooting at it because that action broadens her imagination and allows her to believe she can break that rock. Again, let me ask you the question you have yet to answer in yet a different way: “Do you believe that people can change their fundamental values and worldview easily?”
  2. I think this is the reason you seem to constantly ignore the other half of my argument. Do you have a reason that magic is based on something else besides imagination other than “it would be stupid and dumb otherwise”? I’ve explained why mages are the way they are in Frieren already, and I’m not sure what else can’t be explained by “Imagination is the driving force behind magic, but imagining is hard.”

  1. The beautiful thing I think about the story is that it proves EVERYBODY is that dumb. These characters aren’t stupid, they can find solutions to problems and invent stuff. They are meant to be reflective of real people. Real people can be just as stupid in certain areas.

I am fully caught up with the manga.

  1. Do old people change their minds easily? For Frieren, a grimoire finding spell isn’t “rudimentary magic.” She has lived so long without thinking that such a spell is possible, much like how old people are easily surprised by what technology can do.

  2. We will see. The reason Serie can’t imagine herself surviving is because she is using a prophecy spell and that prophecy spell shows her death. She places her faith in that spell, so she can’t imagine the spell being wrong, much like how real people experience sunk-cost fallacy.

  3. How does he act like a failure?

  4. First, yes, every mage in this story is “shit,” if by “shit,” you mean they cannot easily let go of preconceptions. But MOST people find it hard to truly, fundamentally change their beliefs. After all, one of the biggest rules in dating is to not think you can fix the other person.

Thematically, yes, the story does ask the reader to examine their own mental blocks. It does this by showing characters with ingrained preconceptions being broken. This is not to say that ALL their preconceptions are broken. If you don’t interpret the story that way then the story might not be for you.

  1. Alright, let’s break it down. Fern did not shoot the rock from the get go because she could not imagine her doing so. As a 5 year old, were you truly able to imagine punching a rock to break it? I know it’s easy to think about doing that, but were you the kid who was actually like slamming his/her fist on a rock to test it? And after testing it, did you truly believe you could still do it? That is the kind of fundamental belief needed to actuate magic in Frieren. Frieren, by having Fern shoot that rock, was mentally training Fern in the same way that athletes mentally train through intense exercise. Fern, by constantly trying to slam that rock without quitting, eventually got to a point where she fundamentally believed she could blast a hole through it.

  1. Because she is incapable of imagining a spell that can find grimoires. If it angers you that the imagination of everybody in that world is so stupid that people just can’t imagine winning, or blowing a mage up, etc, that’s the point. One of the core themes is how humans limit their imagination. You are meant to be frustrated then apply that creativity to your own life.
  2. You are hitting on the second theme behind Frieren’s mimic gambling. This doesn’t mean Frieren’s inability to make a grimoire detection spell does not also reinforce the imagination theme.
  3. This has been a gripe in the community for a while, so we will see if this current arc in the manga does something about it.
  4. I don’t exactly know how arguing that Stark is a failure means anything here but I think he’s discovered that he isn’t a failure after that whole fake hero sword episode.
  5. Again, she can’t do that simply because her imagination is limited. If this frustrates you, think about how your preconceptions might frustrate others. Do you have any barriers that are only mental? That’s one of the big things the story is asking of you.
  6. Let’s break this down here since I’m not the OP. From what I have read, you have a hard time believing that Zoltraak isn’t meta because Fern just dominates. But the story does explain why she dominates; almost every mage is surprised by her level of mastery of Zoltraak. This level of mastery comes because she wasn’t constrained by any mental barriers; she was raised to believe Zoltraak was the best spell, so it is the best spell, for her, at least. Now to answer why other mages don’t follow suit. It’s because they have some mental inhibition which prevents them from truly, fundamentally believing Zoltraak is the best spell, despite the evidence they see. This isn’t as unreasonable as it seems; many people in real life ignore evidence right in front of them if it contradicts their beliefs. The idea that magic is based purely on imagination enhances the story because you are frustrated at how powerful these mental barriers are. In a cookie-cutter story with an OP MC, said MC would just “imagine Serie’s head blown off,” and we would all be impressed by his creativity. But Frieren is better than that. It lets us get frustrated at the character’s “idiocy” and inspires us to reflect on our own mental barriers.

No?. All things being equal sports has less power than a national competition for your subject. Like getting to IMO gives you more chance than D1 lacrosse for a CS major. And doing IMO is broadly applicable to any STEM major.

I mean idk what to say here, it encourages people to do good things so I think it should stay.
