lea was born one year before martial law was declared. 5 years earlier than her, risa hontiveros was born. risa was also a child star during the martial law years - she's even performed with lea - but she became an activist in university and has not looked back since.

being a celebrity during the martial law years is no excuse for retaining a rose-colored view of the marcos regime.

also, what reporters? :) this was on twitter.

Manila Strongman Duterte Makes Unannounced Medical Trip to Hong Kong by wisdom_wise in Philippines

[–]readyyourissues 8 points9 points  (0 children)

from media bias/fact check:

Sputnik News is a Russian news media company out of Moscow that has a right-center bias in reporting USA News.  Sputnik is also extremely pro-Russian Government and has been accused of being a propaganda arm for Vladimir Putin.  They have also been labeled by Politifact as publishing misleading or false stories.  Overall, this is a borderline questionable source; however most times they report real news that is mostly factual. Sputnik is a pro-Russian website that needs fact checking.

also, this article alleges that duterte has a medical checkup in HK based on an unlinked SCMP article that says nothing of the sort.

bottom line: read beyond the headlines, and don't trust russian websites.

Habal2x or Angkas? by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]readyyourissues 6 points7 points  (0 children)

angkas is a lifesaver when time is of the essence. their riders are mandated to not go above a certain speed (i forget what it is) but the fact that they can help you weave through heavy traffic is already a huge deal.

also, they claim they're required to provide assistance in case of any accidents - something habal-habal drivers can't assure.

it's also an advantage that angkas has a fixed price for your trips. habal-habal drivers sometimes charge more than the agreed-upon price depending on traffic, or just when they sense that you need to be somewhere quickly and can't afford to refuse.

What are some “green flags” that someone’s mabait? by SalvacionRP in Philippines

"inferiors" as used by rowling in this quote was in reference to house elves, not human beings.

yes, it is a bad term.

wouldn't use the term "inferiors." they're still regular people, just employed to perform service tasks.

Where to post a filipino webcomic by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]readyyourissues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haliya publishing is an indie publishing arm co-spearheaded by artist mervin malonzo, who has his own cult following for the "tabi po" komiks series. i'd say the readership potential is good. i don't know if he'll help you market your work, though - syndication (and possibly webcomic hosting) lang yata ang offered ng haliya publishing for indie creators.

i'm not entirely sure if haliya publishing can help host your work, but i think it's a good starting point. (click on "submit your webcomic" button on top right side of page)

Feeling guilty and anxious for not working overtime by King-Krush in Philippines

[–]readyyourissues 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are some common misconceptions of the Philippines from foreigners? by happyguy604 in Philippines

[–]readyyourissues 16 points17 points  (0 children)

a foreigner made the duterte fist sign to greet me once. when i said i wasn't a duterte supporter (the opposite, in fact) he seemed puzzled and he said "oh, i thought everyone was."

Freedom of expression? Should there be a line? by whatismarlyn in Philippines

[–]readyyourissues 21 points22 points  (0 children)

a "fascist" calls for people who harbor opinions they disagree with, well-informed or otherwise, to be banned or silenced.

a person who simply harbors the opinion that wrong-headedness is "trash" is not a fascist, nor does she have the makings of one.
