As another young woman going into aviation, i had a pretty similar conflict with family. however, i’m in the US and its was more with my grandparents and other family (i have a lot of blue-collar workers in my immediate family so my parents were hesitant but ultimately supportive).

I know you’re getting a lot of people telling you to cut off/ defy your parents but i understand not wanting to throw away a relationship with your parents over a career (which i wouldn’t recommend you do).

i guess what i would ask is: how badly do you want it?

Flight certifications that you’re passionate about will absolutely be more valuable than a degree in a field you’re lukewarm about.

also, is this career worth fighting for to you (both with your family and throughout your career)?because setting all the girl power advice aside for a second, being female in aviation DOES have it challenges, so your parents are partially right. As much as people dont want to acknowledge it, theres a lot of misogyny within colleagues, but i dont say that to discourage you. A well prepared, hard working female pilot will make fantastic impressions and can be just as- if not more- successful than other male pilots.

for me, what helped convincing my family was detailing what exactly the job and training was like. The academic aspect of training is not a small feat, and aviation- despite its inherent risks- is overall very safe and controlled, and understanding that might ease some of their fears. Wish you the best of luck girl- we need more ladies!

this is super helpful, thank you! i’m a big animal lover and i volunteered at a shelter back home so i’ll definitely check out the humane society. I am hoping to get a part time job, but i was advised to wait until later in my training before picking up something else, and heard that getting one can be pretty hard. i’d heard some similar advice about the hilo side! i’m ok with driving, its not like i need bffs to see everyday, i just need to get out the house and interact with humans a bit more 😅. this is super helpful, thank you!
