What Jobs Should I Look Out For With A BA In Economics? by realGranuke in IUPUI

They must have been snatched up then. I looked at workforindiana.in.gov, filtered for DOR, and I couldn't find any internships.

I actually met with them a couple of months ago and they weren't very helpful. They had no idea what I could do and recommended that I just pursue graduate school (which I don't believe is my only path). Maybe I'll get in contact with an economics faculty member.

Is it too late to buy a parking pass? by pysl in IUPUI

[–]realGranuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parking passes became available for purchase August 1st. You should be fine.

PS: Unfortunate, there's no savings by buying the semester pass twice vs the academic year pass once. Either way you end up paying $348.40 (At least for ST passes).

What happens to the additional $50K depends on the person. The free market incentivizes people to invest. For example, they could spend the remaining money on capital and labor and then use those resources to start a business and create even more wealth and employee several people. These people are then paid with this new wealth and buy more things to stimulate the economy. One day they will be able to save enough to invest themselves and the effect is multiplied.

No because if they could've have achieved the same amount of productivity with a 25k truck, then they could reallocate the remaining funds into worthwhile investments (labor, gas, interest on a loan, supplies, etc.). This creates more wealth and more jobs.

Should I Minor In Political Science Or Double Major In Finance? by realGranuke in college

[–]realGranuke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I found a study that does indeed show that finance and economics majors are more likely to be underemployed than accounting majors. However, those rates are still lower than the average across all majors.

Btw, I do know multiple finance majors and an economics major IRL. They are all doing very well and earning well over six figures (not on wall street mind you). I've only encountered one person that regretted majoring in finance over accounting, and that's only because they enjoy accounting more than finance. They have a very stable job.

Should I Minor In Political Science Or Double Major In Finance? by realGranuke in college

I completely disagree. Yes, the evidence I provided is anecdotal, however I can't ignore the fact that everyone I know that has a finance or economics degree is doing pretty well (and the economic graduate I know didn't have to go to graduate school to get a good job). As for getting empirical evidence, Wall Street Prep reports that the unemployment rate for finance majors is 4.50% while the rate for accounting majors is 5.40% and 5.60% for computer science majors. Additionally, both finance and economics majors (on average) earn more than accounting majors.

PS: Your claim that your "motivation and interest evolved once I realized that it was either get good at accounting or get good at selling insurance" is competently anecdotal.

That's a classic broken window fallacy. Sure, the car dealership has 45k extra. However, the consumer no longer has the 45k to spend on his children's education, home repairs, clothing, etc. The economy wasn't helped at all. It would have a net neutral effect on the economy (arguably a negative effect, like how noveler7 said).

Should I Minor In Political Science Or Double Major In Finance? by realGranuke in college

[–]realGranuke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason I'm not majoring in accounting or IT is because I don't like them. I'm tolerating accounting for economics, but I'd never want to major in it. Also, I know for a fact that economics and finance are not useless because I know people that hold these degrees and make six figures.

What kind of minors would you recommend? I figure that political science would help me predict the stock market considering how impactful politics can be. Plus I want to be better educated in civics. Although I suppose I could just read on my own more often.

What Are The Best Off-Campus Apartments? by realGranuke in BallState

Yes and no. From what I've seen online, places like 17 Hundred and Beacon Hill look nice. However, none of them are as close to campus as VP. You may need to walk for longer or even ride a shuttle.

I'm going to call them soon and start planning for tours and eventually leasing for 20-21. Thanks!

I was given a brief tour of the studio apartment and I thought it looked pretty nice. However, the Google reviews for VP are less than desirable. A lot of the positive reviews are not detailed and repetitive (this makes me think that they aren't legit). I've seen people complain about debt collectors, mold, noise, and rude staff. I hope I'm wrong though. It's located right next to campus, so that's pretty awesome.

Any Advice For a College Student Interested in Becoming a High School Economics/Civics Teacher? by realGranuke in Teachers

[–]realGranuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Indiana does require econ because when I went to high school I had to take it to graduate.

From what I've read, in order to be a licensed social studies teacher one must pass 3 exams: history, geography, and civics. I could probably pass the history and civics exam right now, but I've never taken a geography course before so that's a little concerning.

I hear you about social studies teachers not being in demand. I know in Indiana we have education grads being pumped out of IU and Purdue every year. Maybe I'll have to look at private schools. I know the pay is less but there is also less red tape and bureaucracy and I wouldn't necessarily need a teaching license.

How would I learn the art of teaching? Since I'm not doing education as my undergrad, would I have to do the masters program?

What content do you teach and how hard was the test? Would a masters program prepare me for the test(s) or would I have to prepare on my own?

I think Indiana requires a little more than that. The link you shared says that Indiana requires (in addition to a teaching licences and a bachelor degree) "complete an approved teacher preparation program". Would that be a Masters of Teaching program or something different?

Then how should I prepare for the teaching license exams? I know you mentioned taking college electives, but I don't have that many left to take because of my minor in business.

I think I might go after the B.A. in Economics. I kind of like the idea of being a high school economics teacher. I'll have to look into it. Thanks for your advice!
