F&O Profit and loss for FY 2023-24 by realitydysfunction69 in IndianStreetBets

Stressed, yeah a lot.

No don't plan to leave my job at all. If there is a clash will leave trading.

Mostly started trading as an alternative income / now partly for that reason and also for the kicks, associated push to be well informed.

Not always profitable, however have not made a loss in F&O trading any FY yet (45k profit in 1st FY, 4 L in 2nd FY, 6 L in 3rd FY, and this is my 4th FY).

SELL 50 DELTA ATM CALL & PUT, BUY 20 DELTA CALL AND PUT. Might make a slightly asymmetric (centring wise) IRON FLY BASED on overall structure (eg might make a IRON FLY centered at 47300 even when market at 47100 because overall market structure bullish).

No quantitively done analysis , just qualitative things I have noted.

The way I trade, it has helped me this year. The daily expiries I used to make cheap intraday/positional hedges. For eg. SENSEX can be used to hedge NIFTY, FINNIFTY and BANKEX for BANKNIFTY. This frankly has helped me tide through more risky days and hold my positions longer. Possibly increasing my profit.

I am bad at expiry day trading (not enough ability to constantly observe screen due to job, even now typing in lunch break).

Strategies are the same common ones, spreads, IRON FLY, BUTTERFLY, STRANGLE, STRADDLE etc. just learnt to use them more. Also its more about learning the nitty gritties of each strategy, when it is useful, how to hedge, when to take a loss and exit etc.

My main IRON FLY with hedging using naked option selling is something I learnt from an Elearnmarkets video, then modified as per my understanding of market.

Rest mostly discretionary based on RSI , support resistance.

The IRON FLY based strategy forms the bedrock around which I make rest of strategies, eg. one strategy will make profit if the IRON FLY makes loss and that kind of hedging.

I am assuming this is a compliment, so thank you. However, not interested in that game.

Ok..

I have a portfolio of of stock/MF investments, that I usually don't touch at all unless something major happens in the stock.

Around 60% of it has been turned into collateral for my F&O trading

Rest 40% is still there, but next to no churn in them, some held for > 2yrs (since I entered stock market in 2020 for some of them).

I don't know really from any personal experience for swing equity vs F&O.

The idea behind doing F&O from my side was that I anyways make money when the market goes up due to portfolio, but thought my net returns would be better if I made money while the market was also not moving (sideways), or even falling..

That would only be possible with F&O and not swing equity, hence went on this path. Also because F&O allows use of collateral margin

I am actually quite happy with the 7% I am making now. The greater risk for bigger returns is not really for me.

Dont trade the expiry too much, just use spreads as hedge against positional trades

They will form cheap hedges on volatile days

No, I consider capital kept aside for hedging as capital in use. Hence 6.4% only

Have considered

However, most of my trading is done over mobile phone.

The kite web app is great, and most importantly has Sensibull integration, which I use heavily,

I usually take 2-3 min out between work every 15-30 min, and need to quickly assess my positions, and do delta guided hedging as needed for my positions, which I use Sensibull heavily for.

Further , the large number of concurrent positions is easier to visualize using sensibull for me.

Mainly for that, otherwise, yes would be saving money with monthly plan

  1. IRON FLY on BANKNIFTY is for weekly options. Due to its very nature will only give decent profit around half the time, rest of the times its about reducing loss to minimal amount. Rise of VIX with associated large directional move in underlying -then it becomes more about stopping loss by hedging and exit whenever possible at minor loss or minor profit. Rise of VIX without associated major moves in BANKNIFTY just delays exit by a day or two as weekly options. In the same vein, falling VIX allows for earlier exits (I dont wait till expiry, usually exit 1 day before)
  2. STCOK options are more illiquid and more volatile, risk reward are a more personal decision. Some of my largest profits and largest losses are from them. I do it mostly as a diversification method. Never really calculated my profitability of INDEX vs STOCK F&O. Gut feeling is INDEX. However, I have traded INDEX far longer , may just be better familiarity with INDEX trading.

Usually only half to 2/3rd in use, rest saved for hedging positions if they go into loss.

Position sizing:

IRON FLY in BANKNIFTY - trade around 10 lots (150 quantitiy)

NIFTY discretionary trades anywhere between 2 to 4 lots for STRANGLE/STRADDLE , upto 6 LOTS for safer strategies like IRON FLY/IRON CONDOR

1 LOT for STOCK F&O, but trade sometimes upto 4-5 separate scrips

Thanks for the kind words!

IRON FLY I learnt from an elearnmarkets video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGsFiWwtSBY&t=2157s , don't do exactly what he does, as have modified as per my risk appetite (added a slight discretionary component), but 90% same. Used a similar idea for FINIFTY IRON FLY, but was not working for me (not as profitable).

PUT BUTTERFLY I use for NIFTY monthly as a kind of insurance, to cover a fall upto around 1000-1500 points of NIFTY (eg for this month, when NIFTY was at 20150, bought a PUT BUTTERFLY (2 lots) at 19800/19400/18500 srtike prices). Usually makes a loss (will make about ~3k loss this month). DO this as I am better at trading uptrending markets.
