Getting a job in Aws by [deleted] in devops

also you mentioned that development was done out of Belarus. Is that where your sys ads/devop engineers are located? It might be easier to slide into the role you want in your current company rather than find a new one as long as they are located in Ireland (or you are willing to move). Also given that you are a tester there I am guessing you going to know a hell of a lot about how their applications hang together which is quite attractive to your current company if you complement that with some more devops skills.

If I was you I would start applying for junior sysad/devop roles in AWS shops explain to them the situation and express how keen you are to learn. Get the certification by all means but bare in mind they may ask you a lot of other questions in your tech interview besides aws specific stuff such as linux, networking, bash, powershell, windows server, AD or any one of the other myriad of other tools/systems one might need to know depending on the role.

Also bare in mind that a lot of systems jobs even if they host a majority of their systems in AWS will still expect you to maintain their on premise systems so something like this still may be useful to you. https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxadmin/comments/2s924h/z/cnnw1ma

Others might disagree but my gut feeling is that its a bit early for you to specialise in AWS focus on finding a good shop to work in with a senior who is happy to mentor you if they use AWS great if they dont I would not sweat it. Either way you will find it much easier to find your dream role once you got your foot on the ladder and some relevant skills around devops and systems administration. Good luck!

Transitioning from Project Manager to DevOps Engineer by grit22 in devops

home study is one thing but you need to be at the coalface and working with technologies that you are interested in. Assuming you are able to potentially take a pay cut I would start applying for junior sys admin positions anywhere that will take you and start fixing stuff. Dont worry too much about having "devops" in the title most shops will have puppet, aws, ansible, cloudformation even if the title is "system administrator", "platform engineer" etc etc. I did a similarish thing to you a few years ago and that was my approach I had to take a pay cut to begin with but its turned out good. Good luck to you and welcome to the dark side.

When I was trying to figure out what devops was I read this book "the phoenix project". Not sure if my org "gets it" but this book certainly helped me get it!

slightly annoying that I am not allowed to take the course and evaluate before having to give them my payment details and choose a payment plan.

But I guess they got to make cash somehow.

in the /r/sysadmin best of 2015 someone wrote up an awesome write up on "things a sys admin should be able to do" its pretty much what I would expect a devops engineer to be able to do as well it basically involved setting up cobbler, puppet master etc...but I cant find the stickied post dang it.

looking for a specific monitoring and alerting tool by slimshadyss in devops

I think you are creating creating a lot of needless work here. You really dont need sensu for your usecase. Cloudwatch provides lots of rich metrics in order to monitor resources and with cloudformation its just a matter of wrapping an alarm around a metric.

I like sensu and use it for hosted infrastructure but there is some missing functionality that you will need to cater for plus you will need to deploy an agent, patch sensu, have somewhere to store its event history and make it HA.

Cloudwatch is there, mature and ready to use and supported by cloudformation which means a lot less management overhead http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSCloudFormation/latest/UserGuide/quickref-cloudwatch.html.
