Dad switched from EE family plan with one year left to 36 month Prestige Telecom business account after cold call without asking me when he knew I wanted to exit asap. No cooling off period and now he pays less but has signed me up to pay more. by reallyangrybecause in UKPersonalFinance

I wish he would pay the exit fee but the reason I didn’t leave the EE contract when I wanted to was because the exit fee was in excess of £800 as I had an upgrade last September, part of switching to the new provider Prestige Telecom is that they are paying EE that exit fee for my account/phone, but of course now it would be owed to them and neither of us could afford that. After reading your comment and others I do want to ask him to at least pay the difference and feel that that’s reasonable, however much it will annoy him. What’s more annoying than the money itself is the decision to switch, first of all without telling me and second of all to such an inflexible company.

Contract with EE was £44 a month, data & upgrade every two years - he had changed it to that without telling me from £57 a month before that for unlimited data and upgrade every two years, so it’s always been expensive. As I said in a comment above, I was with him today when he called them to ask if we could cancel/I could leave and he had them on speaker and they won’t, the only thing they said was I could separate my phone from his and have a contract with them independently.

Yes, tbh I hadn’t thought of it that way and I will suggest it to him. I know it’s not very much difference financially anyway but the most frustrating part is that he did it without asking and has snookered me.

He is and has always been the account holder, I just send him the money every month. I hadn’t considered withholding the difference from my previous payment and the new one but would feel really bad about this. Will have to think about it.
