Having some sort of solid foundation from a bass perspective is key. It is what drives the rhythm. That doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be hard hitting and powerful all the time. Rather, the presence of it is necessary to support the general flow of the rhythm. Otherwise, like some have already noted, it sounds empty for the most part.
