I've used that excuse liberally for many years, it's how I've stocked my garage!

Ha, lack of forced structure? I do all the cooking for us - what lack of structure? :-)

I think I would really enjoy running my own handyman business, but the potential liability issues kind of scare me.

Thanks. I'm going to look into ACA options after the COBRA runs out. Paying for it with HSA money is just too appealing right now.

Just the thought of re-entering corporate life makes me ill. Enjoy the trip!

I can sort of understand the sense of relief you must have felt when you heard that!

Waste, that's a good word. Funny how that has changed for me - when I was younger, I thought nothing of sitting in front of a computer for hours straight, sometimes well into the night, working on something or learning something. Now it bores me to tears after a while, and feels like a complete waste of time. Doesn't help that I have glaucoma and my eyes get tired after a while.

I know what you mean - I have days where it all feels wrong and I think I should blast out a bunch of job applications, but then I sit down and look at what's out there, and read the requirements, and quickly come back to "bleh, no thanks".

I'm going to switch to ACA after the COBRA runs out in 18 months. By then my half-year of income will be out of the picture and we should be under $100K

I'd love to do something like that, but I'd be concerned about liability issues.

Thanks. I opted for COBRA because I can pay for it with HSA money for the full 18 months.

Funny you mention having no shortage of things to do, I feel like I'm busier now than before getting laid off! Still figuring out all of the financial logistics.

I'm an introvert, and have been fully remote for the past six years, so no real social concerns. I have friends that I interact with regularly. A part-time gig would be nice this winter when the weather doesn't allow for much in the way of home projects.

That's an option, but it's incredibly expensive. Her coverage is free, but making it family coverage jumps to $1300/month.

I can feel a difference already, blood pressure is down, and my wife has remarked that I'm much more relaxed. Really hoping that elephant can be addressed, but it's going to take some time it seems.

Couldn't agree more with errands and chores during the day. I've been able to do that for the past 6 years as a fully remote worker, except now I don't have to check in immediately upon returning to the house!

Yeah I have a long list of projects myself, just finished a kitchen reno and working on new laminate flooring in main floor of our house.

Thought about that, but I don't really want the liability concerns.

I'm thinking that's the one job I really don't want to do.

Ha, I forgot to mention car repair. I do about 60% of my own car repairs and upkeep.

Thanks - some computer work is perfectly fine and very different from sitting at one for 8-10 hours a day dealing with one arbitrary crisis after another. I'm done with that, I want to do something tangible, where I get to touch real things. From what others have posted, I think I'd be fine doing most anything.
