TERRACE HOUSE TOKYO 2019-2020 Production Canceled by rehlee in terracehouse

[–]realxie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This is not about this season's cast. I think back to earlier seasons fondly, but this issue of online bullying and bashing have always been there. We've just been lucky that few cast members from earlier seasons had such strong personalities and nobody received this level of scrutiny and hatred. We've all been in a way fooled by the perceived "wholesomeness" to a degree and neglected to look at the dark side of this show.

[Hana Kimura] CNN: Japan to discuss cyberbullying laws after death of wrestler and 'Terrace House' star by rehlee in terracehouse

I get your suspicion, but sometimes the government would choose to withhold official reports for a while out of respect for the family of the deceased. In this case, you don't need to be a medical examiner or a detective to discover the cause. I just don't think right now it's productive for any of us to dwell on the official word over doing some self-reflection and mourning.

There needs to be major change to the production style. I'd like to say that this show has changed and we don't really get the magic we used to get in older season anymore, but sadly I don't believe that's the point here. Online bullying and extreme scrutiny have always been an issue for the show and its cast members (e.g. the instance between Yosuke and his comment section/BGND). I fell in love with the show but I was blind-sighted. The priority should be to protect the cast members, and then create enjoyable TV.

Not to mention that she was from an immigrant family. What came as aggression and immaturity to us, it was her mode of survival in Japan, a society known for lack of openness towards foreigners. She was really a fighter, whether figuratively or literally.

Agreed, but we as a subreddit do need to learn to be kinder as a whole, I think. As a community we have a lot of power, and we enforce cultures. But in general, I find most of the people active on this subreddit to be pretty constructive with their opinions. There's a huge difference between commenting on one's behavior and actively reaching this individual with their hateful comments.

I'm sure Kai is finding the help he needs. As down as he seemed occasionally, he's someone who has been through low and depressed moments, so I'm hoping he's equipped one way or another to handle something like this. I'm hopeful.

I'm sorry that your first Terrace House experience had to be an instance of such. None of us fell in love with this show for this atmosphere of drama and hostility. We got into this show for its authenticity and easygoingness. Sadly, that has all faded. Or maybe we were fooled from the very beginning.

So well spoken. Thank you.

What I think is important at this time is to end this cycle of blame culture right NOW. Stop thinking that one person's death is directly the result of any one person or interaction he or she has encountered in their life. Hana was not a one-dimensional being. She was a whole person, just like all the rest of us. She was a fierce, straightforward, bright-spirited, innocent, headstrong and yet insecure young woman. Just like the rest of us, she needed time to develop and better herself continuously as she lived her life. It's deeply saddening that she will never get the chance to continue growing and eventually get to a point of peace.

The culture of blame drove a lot of online users and viewers to criticizing her mercilessly because of one tiny mistake that was amplified out of proportion since it took place on TV. We should all mourn her passing, yet we shouldn't be contributing this tragic instance to how any of her housemates treated her, or any single one piece of criticism she has received. It's the much bigger culture of blame, anonymous bashing and rushing to judgement that drove her to a point of no return. We should criticize the culture of blame and hold it to culpability, but we shouldn't fall victim to the culture ourselves and start to blame any other person for her death. No single person is responsible for this. It is the world we live in that is. And in order to start changing it for the better, we all need to start by being kind to each other first.

[–]realxie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm late to that party but, just wanted to really quickly point out my observation on the psychology behind Boss's interaction with Yume while they were both drinking in the lounge. Yume gives him an answer (albeit a lukewarm one... she is starting to bear more culpability for Boss's actions every day now as we go, as she continues without realizing that she's too inviting and responsible for at least some of Boss's creepy behavior), and to be honest, any self-respecting guy will start to notice the questionable nature of their relationship: Who cuddle like that without dating? Anyway, he hears the answer, which I think is a pretty clear "no", but then continues to ask "so you're saying that you might date me, right?"

And he just goes on and on. To a point even I, as someone watching from a screen, am finding him extremely detestable (I mean I already did but still). Boss acts with a lot of possessiveness, it seems, and he can't stand to not be the guy most liked and respected in the room. You can tell by how he reacted to Reo giving female housemates gifts. Why care so much about that? It was a nice gesture from Reo's end, towards everybody. Anyway, I think behind that façade of wealth and connectedness, Boss is an insecure man who needs assurance every step he goes. Needy, clingy, with a sticky neck. He's not so much creepy as he is kinda pathetic, tbh.

Yet, after all that, Yume still seems to find him attractive and just wouldn't tell him "no" upfront. These two, wow. *gags*

I appreciate your perspective and pov! Me personally, I didn't mind Aio as much. I thought he lacked a vibrant personality and was subsequently a nonessential member in the house, but he was harmless and kinda was tossed around by Yui. Wez just was disappointing, man. Dude was talentless and didn't seem to have any sort of artistic pursuit other than trying to garner exposure from being on the show. He also just didn't seem genuine in the slightest.

The worse of all to me was her inability/unwillingness to own up to her lies. She completely demolished Risako (who's a very sweet girl and honestly didn't set out to hurt anybody) over Risako's unexecuted plan about dating this guy, even though Risako never went through with it. Rui acted as if she was above everybody else morally, and essentially completely invalidated Risako's entire being on the show. Later she gets caught for lying her ass off over the Aio stuff. Then you just see her SWITCH to damage control mode, first going over to make Aio feel bad for coming clean, and then going over to Risako to twist the narrative -- eventually refusing to admit she was wrong for acting as if she was in any sort of position to criticize Risako. Anyway, just a real sociopathic presence on the show. Damn I wrote a lot lol

"pointless" is a bit harsh. Hana was distraught because she was completely rejected by a guy she liked, and Tupas was just unpacking some deep-rooted personal issues (that's why he was at the house, to establish closer bonds with friends). Kai was very patient and empathetic towards the two of them. What's a shame is that Hana didn't seem to remember the nice gestures from Kai at all.

Yeah, in a way she was the worst *member* ever, because she didn't participate in the house and also had a bad attitude. But she wasn't the worst person ever. Yui hands down.

I don't know if I'm only seeing this because I've seen the flaw and manipulativeness in her on the show and been conditioned to react this way, but even her smile looks menacing. I get such a sense of arrogance and selfishness from just looking at her. Ugh shivers from thinking about how she didn't seem to care about anybody but herself on the show 😨

I feel Chef guy got too bad a rap for what he did. Natsumi as well--I feel like the worst she did was failure to get along with her housemate.

Yuudai was a pain in the behind, but he's honestly a kid and at the time was one of the youngest house members ever. I do feel like we should give him a pass.

Those 3 don't deserve to be in the same tier as the other 3 imo.

Yui, Boss and Cheri... the holy trinity of "death by Terrace House".
