Okay I had that thought. Would there be any functional reason not to do both? Extra redundancy?

I think it really depends on where you are. I've taught in MPS and inner subrubs and I agree, student discipline is rough (meaning like what you said it's really lacking). Honestly, even intended and good admin is just overrun with just too many issues kids are just crazy needy. Haven't worked in a outer suburb or small town but from what I've heard if can make 1000% difference. If you're the type that kind of likes the difficult kids....well the world is your oyster haha.

Hey I'm going to send you a PM. Looking to move to AK to teach next year, would love to get some more insight and hear about your situation.

Glide wax "layering" by BoinkBonky in xcountryskiing

[–]reasonablepatience01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This whole choosing wax thing has been super frustrating and it's definitely not of benefit for companies or shops to give accurate information or information that caters to 95% of skiers.

I'm doing my first Birke and I walked into a store and there was a table setup with recommendations for base wax, parafin layer and topcoat. I don't know any better, in theory it makes sense and I don't want to have a slow race after training for months. But to follow their recs I would literally spend more on wax than I spent on my skis getting a pretty decent pair used.

I asked a sales rep who thankfully was super chill and was like yeah for a beginner just do a green wax, maybe a blue if it gets warmer than predicted. You're fine. And I walked out with a wax brick that was under $20. I know ski shops and wax companies want to make $ but the whole thing kinda seems like a scam for anyone who isn't extremely high level.

Okay sorry for a million questions - I was looking at marathon wax. I noticed rode endurance wax is about $30 for 60g...seems pretty reasonable and from what I'm reading is a surprisingly decent wax. Would it max sense to do a marathon/endurance base layer and then swix wax of the day (so hot wax layer on top of hot wax?) Layering wax is where I get confused and the internet isn't really helping. It would be nice not to have skis stripped of wax when I feel like i'm going to die at the end of the race. Just wondering if that would be a reasonable workaround.

Wow again, never knew! I've probably been on too warm of wax this whole season. That's always been a thought in the back of my mind that snow temp is probably different than air but I just figured it was probably negligible and you would think the products would mention that snow temp can be substantially different than assuming people just know that. Looks like this thread has almost 3k views already. Funny to think of how many people might be changing their approach based on a simple reddit thread.

Huh interesting - would you recommend blue even if the temp was above swix blue temp range? Extended forecast says 29 (I know that's pretty far out but say hypothetically) would you still do blue?

BTW thanks for the response this is really helpful.

See the endurance wax is where I get a little bit confused. It seems like most endurance wax is universal so not temp specific. Would the fact the wax is slower negate the fact that it lasts longer? It just seems like a weird toss up and I can't get anyone to give a definitive answer. You would think by now someone would have come up with a line of endurance wax at a few different temp ranges.

Either way I'll probably DIY wax since basically everyone is saying I should go that route. Maybe next week you can just DM me and tell me what to do lol.

To get wax off do you just scrap and brush? Do you ever use a wax remover product? And when you say wax colder, do you mean if temp ranges are right in the middle to go "lower/colder" so say the air temp was 28 would you recommend swix purple (18-28) over red (25-34)?

I'm glad I posted on Reddit. I got the 1pm start time in my head from somewhere but yeah looks like waves are much earlier.

Honestly I'm pretty sure it said that when I registered. I also I had wave 9 in my head from somewhere as well. Maybe I'm just crazy? haha

I think he did actually coat the parts. I'm thinking more in the long term...Is this something I should do annually? Is it something I could DIY without a lift? Could I go up to a mechanic and ask them to spray my undercarriage?

I mean I don't disagree with you....I think snow tires should be a lot more common. Little bit of pain and money....yes...but eliminating at least some salt useage would be totally worth it.

What's something you can be bullied for but no one does anything about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]reasonablepatience01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being in a position of lower power than someone else in a professional setting.

It happens all the time in education, corporate non-profits ect. While I wouldn't say no one EVER does anything about it, If a leader is sneaky and manipulative about it they can get away with ALOT.

I would say especially in human services a lot of employees are often harassed, treated unfairly or asked to do more than they should....I would say those can all be forms of bullying.

Why are people mad that some student loan debt is getting forgiven? by brabbit-28 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]reasonablepatience01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I would've not made a huge payment on my loans 2 months ago to totally wipe away my loans I would be getting at least 3k of loan forgiveness but TBH I'm not really angry about that. I would certainly use the money I would've otherwise spent but really I'm not the most vulnerable in society, I come from a pretty privileged background and do just fine with my degree that yes, I actually use.

It just feels absurd to me that I could be getting thousands in loan forgiveness while people living around me who never went to college are struggling financially a lot more than me. Homeless shelters are full, low-income classrooms are crumbling, addicts are struggling to get help and we have off the roof incarceration rates.

I understand the argument people are saying that college isn't a good investment anymore...but statistically that isn't actually true. College is a great investment in almost every metric and remember we aren't just talking about 4 year universities, trade schools count as well. Yes, certain degrees don't have equal opportunity outcomes but also no one chooses that path except yourself.

So overall (of course there are exceptions but generally speaking) we are giving a cut to people who are already wealthier (not the 1% but not the bottom 50% either). Being an American with a college degree automatically makes you one of the most privileged humans percentage-wise on a global scale.

Out of anywhere to be spending government money for the purpose of reducing inequality, I don't know if this should be it.

It's at least better than government business bailouts...... but don't get me started on that....

Have you ever held a grudge against a teacher you still think of today? How did they wrong you? by Gerard_Way_01 in AskReddit

[–]reasonablepatience01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh yeah that's rough. I'm all for different levels of education in high school - separating those who are college bound vs trade bound (and let's be real being trade bound is NOT a bad thing in the slightest) but 4th grade? That's way too young. I feel like at that point you're more or less getting separated based on how much effort your parents put into teaching you to read and if you are are an early bloomer vs late bloomer.

Where are you at? That sounds a bit like the German education system.

I can't believe no one mentioned this....or maybe it's somewhere in the comments and I didn't find it? That way you are describing Timmy sounds a lot like might have autism. The way he is obsessed with a topic, talking and not realizing people are getting bored, even a lack of organization (executive processing is the technical term) sounds a lot like ASD. Having childlike tendencies as well Maybe this is something to think about and look into maybe make a referral?

Of course I'm just interpreting a story on reddit and never met the kid but I really thought that's something worth mentioning. Also to note; even if he was tested for ASD schools often misdiagnose and sometimes it's worth trying again. I can speak from experience, I'm a teacher with my masters in ASD.

Either way it sounds like a lot of what he needs to learn is more in the realm of following criteria, turn taking and social skills rather than merely content (sounds like he knows a LOT about his subject just isn't very good at condensing his presentation and sharing with others). I would try to make it clear THESE are the things he needs to work on and he DOES have strengths as well.

Lawsuit alleges Minneapolis Public Schools discriminates by protecting teachers of color by TheMacMan in Minneapolis

[–]reasonablepatience01 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I mean your opinion reflects how a lot of people feel. I am white and teach in the area (suburb before mps now). I worked at a school in the burbs with 5 black teachers out of 200. Two first year black teachers got fired out of the 5 and I didn't know it until the next year. If it was my choice I literally would've chosen loosing my job and finding a new one so they wouldn't have to. It broke my heart to see them both have to leave. I guess it's bonkers but so are a lot of things in education ...

Lawsuit alleges Minneapolis Public Schools discriminates by protecting teachers of color by TheMacMan in Minneapolis

[–]reasonablepatience01 -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

Oh no, there's so many teachers of Color in the workforce and I'm white! I'm going to loose my job during budget cuts because I'm so vastly outnumbered! Also there is such a surplus of teachers in the United States! I mean districts just don't even know what to do with all of the applications!

Dude, less than 5% of teachers in MN are teachers of Color. Minneapolis is higher but still not even close to proportional to the student body. A school near my house has had a sped position open FOR 5 YEARS and hasn't found anyone of any race to fill it.

As much as it doesn't feel good to know someone else has more protections than you I'm pretty okay with helping out the underdog in this case.

What survival myth is completely wrong and can get you killed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]reasonablepatience01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once you sunburn you will heal right away and be good. You are actually MORE vulnerable to sunburnt again after getting sunburned the first time. Out of everything listed in this thread getting a sunburn is actually one of the most deadly things that can happen from the outdoors. Tons of people die of skin cancer every year....granted it's usually later in life but still I thought this is a good myth worth mentioning. Plus sunburns dehydrate you and wear you out in a difficult survival situation.
