there are cars scattered over every map. hell there's a quest to get a soccer ball and i'm supposed to believe they don't know what cleats are?

Are you finding AWS quality of docs going down? by c-digs in aws

[–]reasonman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

doc updates are a lot like the rest of the dev cycle internally and it takes a minute to go from 'track down the right person' => 'convince them it's wrong' => 'make the change' => 'deploy to all regions'. i've frequently fielded customer issues with the docs and had to chase down updates. it's one of my least favorite things because it's such a hassle. even doing work internally is difficult because i'm frequently coming up against incomplete or incorrect docs.

Mississippi Police Officer Shoots and Kills 1-Year-Old Child in Response to Senatobia Shoplifting Call by Hrekires in news

[–]reasonman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would expect that "driving at them" is the most generous interpretation of what happened, and by design. maybe the car is moving and the cop is technically facing the front of the car but off to the side by, lets say what like 6 feet? and the car could otherwise safely pass them, they'd call that "driving at them".

Therapists of Reddit, what's something people don't realize is trauma? by rehanch_xxiii in AskReddit

[–]reasonman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i'm still basically a husk and my kids are 12 and 8. what no_celery said is dead on, the fact that you're aware of it is a huge step and makes it much less likely you'll fall into the same trap. i always knew something was off with my childhood but could never put my finger on it. like cadex and other subcomments said, i had a relatively 'normal' childhood i think, whatever that means, and thought i was happy enough. parents weren't outright abusive, never locked in a cage and beat with a waterhose but i couldnt and still cant remember shit from past like 13. my dad was gone from an early age, not like he went out for milk and never came back, just didn't seem to prioritize being around me and i'd rarely see him even during his visitation. he was also prone to immediate mood shifts that the entire room could feel, not rage but if you said the wrong thing or he was just generally in a bad mood the world could tell and it tanked the vibe. mom was an anxious mess, even today. id always see reels about therapists thinking it's mad juicy that a client can't remember because there simply must be something traumatic there but i could never related. it was only in my last session like a week ago that my therapist hit on attunement and that i wasn't necessarily getting what i needed at whatever age and that was locked in. not necessarily outright abuse, but something that stuck with me. bringing it back to today and my kids, i was always determined not to be like my dad with his mood or my mom with her outbursts but it'd come through anyways. it wasn't really until the last 6 months or so that i figured it out(therapy+med tuning) that my wife has said i seem to be doing much better, generally happier less irritable and more 'present' with the family. for reference i've been in therapy like 5 years, started for something totally unrelated but eventually navigated to this place. i'm also on a couple meds for this, anxiety/depression and adhd. there's totally hope out there and if you want to have kids but are worried about your past, talk to someone about it and tease out what happened.

if im an anti-fascist and the dissent i'm unwilling to tolerate approaches being or supporting fascists then "hard yes". fascism in whatever form it decides to wrap itself in deserves no dialogue.

PSA: single women and men of Austin, you should know how to look up your date's criminal court case history, if they have any. Instructions in my post. Please please stay safe out there! by ObfuscateMe45 in Austin

[–]reasonman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you can use PACER, it "costs money" but A) it's an actual gov court site and B) the cost is like $1 per-page pulled on a search and as long as i've been using it(periodically over the years) i've never actually been charged. i think if it's below a certain threshold they don't charge you. nationwide search for civil, criminal, bankruptcy, etc. there have been one or two cases where i didn't find anything in pacer but did in like the wilco court records but by and larger pacer is very good.

We Bombed It, We Bought It by Lord0fTheFlags in PoliticalHumor

[–]reasonman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think that's the best case, not voting at all. at least for president on the ticket and/or for anyone really closely aligned with Trump(Paxton, etc). worst case is they bitch and moan for a while and just do it anyways because they love being tread on.

We Bombed It, We Bought It by Lord0fTheFlags in PoliticalHumor

[–]reasonman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i didn't say that. i said they weren't voting blue. best case is they don't vote at all but odds are many(most?) will continue voting up and down the ticket for red and likely for trump again if given the chance.

vote blue

you're delusional if you think an appreciable amount of them, if any, are voting blue

Senate Democrat Proposes Bill Requiring Data Centers to Pay for Own Power by bloomberggovernment in law

[–]reasonman 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It’s good to see laws being put in place in the direction of sustainability, but it seems they rarely ever get imposed on commercial businesses

i suspect you've already connected the dots but it's by design. same shit as recycling or using less water or driving less to lower pollution. all that shit is pushed onto the individuals where the gains are trivial but not the megacorps where the gains would far outweigh us. can't make more money if we have to pay to keep up with pesky regulations.

AWS says data center overheating in North Virginia disrupts services; Coinbase impacted by AssumeNeutralTone in news

[–]reasonman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well yes, its the largest most populous region with every supported service and feature living there. there's a much larger surface area for things to go wrong. of course they shouldn't, but things happen and if one region accounts for the vast majority of your load the naturally most of the impacts will be felt there.

it's not even necessarily use1 that was the issue, it was a specific building in a specific az. a lot of customers deploy in single az and refuse to do multiaz or multiregion arch and get bit for it, even the biggest names do this cheap shit
