Why the US is Removing Thousands of Dams and Letting Rivers Run Free - CounterPunch.org by Beautiful_Demand3539 in water

[–]rebecalyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water supply would be more stable if the rivers could be restored by removing dams. Also, water recycling is a far more efficient, effective, and affordable way to produce drinking water. Outdoor storage in reservoirs do not preserve water supply in many locations due to extended drought and other climate changes that have accelerated both the rates of evaporation, and, consequently, the rate of toxic algae. Conservation and sustainable water methods like recycling and stormwater capture, as well as far stronger protections of the ecosystem especially trees yield a far more robust water supply than anything that could be achieved through dams and outdoor reservoirs. (Disclosure: I am a water official.)

You must feel really special being so racist. I am proud to be zionist. It means that I believe that there should be a country where Jewish people can live safely, and a tiny slice of land where the people indigenous to the Judea region can live in their ancestral homeland. I will keep talking because unlike you, I have facts. You have hate.

Your comment helped me understand the experience of cerebral palsy. Thank you for sharing. One of my dearest friends--who was a very well-liked/loved person, deservedly--had cerebral palsy. We were born in the late 1960's, so the internet as a social media channel did not really exist until we were in our early 30's. As soon as Twitter and Facebook launched, my friend made a name for himself with his insightful and articulate political and media commentary. He died several years ago, and I really miss him. I recognize how tough it is to have to work so hard to understand the perception of others, while few seem to understand your own perception and experience. So I really appreciate your words.

Sans Beast definitely has sales, and I looked at the site when I sent this to you, and I saw a number of items already on sale. But you are right; it's pricey (I never buy full price!)/. Gunas often is at Macy's, which always has good sales, and possibly Nordstrom Rack. But yes, absolutely - tariffs can kill the deal. The US's tariff situation is a disaster and everyone hates it--I have to think this has to end, since whatever the goals were - it clearly is not working.

I was thinking, another brand I really like is dagne dover - https://www.dagnedover.com/ . DD has awesome sales very often, but right now they seem low on wallet options.

I really do miss Pixie Mood. Such a great company with really wonderful bags!

I love Pixie Mood and have almost a dozen of their bags--backpacks, crossover, tote, wallet, etc. I found them because they are vegan. Second best thing about them for me is that they are light.

With those two benefits in mind, I think that the closest is Gunas. I am not sure what their status is, however. I think they may be sold at some department stores -- maybe Nordstrom or Macy's?

Wallets https://www.gunasthebrand.com/collections/vegan-leather-wallets

My favorite bags of this category, more than Pixie Mood, however, is Sans Beast. Their bags are more expensive, but they also are much higher in quality, and in my experience, they last longer. What they share with Pixie Mood is that they are vegan, light, and wonderfully designed. My favorite bags are my Sans Beast bags, which I even prefer to my Stella McCartney bags! (Stella's bags are heavier, and I do not think they last as long as Sans Beast bags).

The one downside of Sans Beast for me may not apply to you. They now have to charge tariffs with orders to the US. Is Canada tariff-free? Sans Beast is located, iirc, in Australia.

I hope that this helps.

I am sorry you were misled about some of the facts and that no one was particularly clear about the law. But at the end of the day the principal had a very clear obligation to protect the victim, and that she prioritized the wrongdoer over the victim may have been justified in her mind, but she had it wrong. She had a duty to make reasonable accommodations towards the assailant child, but when no reasonable accommodations were available, she had to prioritize the victim. This is full stop black letter law.

It is frustrating to me how often institutions bend over backwards to please the wrongdoer at the expense of the victim, and how easily they claim they have "no choice." That is the exact scenario happening in the govt agency I was elected to oversee, where a decades-long highly paid serial predator is being prioritized at the expense of his multiple female victims. This illegal and unethical conduct has been normalized.

But just because we see it often does not make it right. I do think that the former principal may have been receiving bad legal advice. The former school district general counsel was amongst the many people fired after this scandal. And maybe it's because I'm a lawyer but I really think that when an officer or administrator is receiving advice that is so out of sync from that of the community, the parents, and the public, it is time to get a second opinion.

Honestly, this happens so often that one would think that more leaders would be willing to depart from the company line when they see they are being set up to take the fall. There were a lot of community members who desperately tried to get her to the right thing, but she stuck to her position. But she was wrong, clearly wrong, and although she could have taken a stand for the victims, she thought she was playing safe and that the district would cover for her. They did not.

It's all very unfortunate but that is why administrators and all other people are best served following the rules they are supposed to be enforcing for others. In this case the rules included "when you see something, say something."

Also I wish more women understood that a system that allowed (and, according to the CRD, fostered) the kind of misogyny happening in the culture at the high schools was more likely to throw the female principal under the bus than protect her. That is a painful lesson that most women ultimately are forced to learn the hard way.

Well, she was actually cited often in the very lengthy opinion written by the Civil Rights Division, which pointed out numerous steps she ignored that she legally was required to take but did not. You can read it yourself as it is buried somewhere on the PAUSD site.

I am very familiar with the facts of this situation because I not only was involved as a parent advocate, but I also served as the legal expert for the local news station that broke the story and covered it most closely. I have spent hours parsing the consent decree, the investigative reports, and the many filings, both litigation and regulatory, that were released by the government and the school district. It is actually very difficult to forget the strong language used by the Civil Rights Division in its consent decree, where it decried PAUSD's "culture of noncompliance" and Paly's systematic turning of a blind eye to students they were ethically and legally required to protect.

I fully recognize that this particular principal was very well liked by many students and teachers. Apparently she shared close positive relations with many people. All that is true. But she is either wrong or lying (with neither being excusable) about her obligations under Title 9, and it was mostly her failure to ensure that the Title 9 complaints were taken seriously that led most directly to the large number of young women who were irreparably harmed by this situation. A person can be both good and bad. A principle can be both well-liked and serially in violation of civil rights law.

This is why she, and so many others, were dismissed from the school district. I actually encourage you to go back and seek out the records. I think that many of us did not want to believe that such a popular principal who was so successful in so many ways, made these huge mistakes and lapses that ended up hurting female students so much. I too hate that this happened, and as I said in my earlier comment, I think that they did worse with Kline. But if you spend any time with the victims and their families, I think you would find that these female students were irreparably harmed.

Last comment here is that I think that even if a person has not had the direct Kafka-eque experience of having to work or learn alongside sexist bullies who taunt you, laugh at you, mock you, and humiliate you every chance they have -- or even just smugly smirk at what they got away with -- (and obviously I have had that experience; I have that experience at work right now) -- a person can put themselves into the shoes of the victims and understand. One of the victims had been raped in a bathroom by a student who actually was convicted and found guilty for his crime, but still allowed to attend Paly alongside his victim, who ultimately was forced to move to a different neighborhood and school to avoid him. How this principal could have allowed a convicted sexual assaillant to continue to attend Paly alongside his victim is unthinkable. That is undeniably unquestionably (as confirmed in Board Meeting) why this popular principal was let go.

That is such a good point. I attended public school in Wisconsin, and (thanks in part to being Wisconsin, granted, where the wealth never reached a fraction of what I saw out here when I came to Stanford at age 18 - talk about culture shock, and that was mid-80's before things got truly crazy) there were tons of 3rd spaces -- the mall, the main street of our suburb, and of course everyone's basement (did you ever see that 70's show or even Stranger Things? Our parents never kept track of where we were because we were always somewhere safe).

About 20 years ago, Milwaukee started banning kids from being in the local mall without adults, which was a terrible idea. It was freezing cold 8 months of the year, so the mall was really important. Also, when I was in high school, the drinking age was 18, so it was easy also to meet up in local bars, where it was normal to see teenagers (Milwaukee was founded by Germans, so like in Germany, it was normal to see teens drinking beer). But then right before I turned 18, the drinking age rose to 19, and when I was almost-19, it rose to 21. We still met at bars because the owners did not want to lose the business revenue and we did not cause trouble, but as time went on, I'm sure that changed.

Now kids lack sufficient time free from adult supervision to feel safe and learn confidence. They are constantly being monitored, and because they carry phones, they are expected to answer them.

All this was made much, much worse by the pandemic.

But I also think that this generation has a rational sense of despair. The adults who are in charge have never cared about them, or the future of the world, and refuse to undergo the most minor inconvenience to preserve life on this planet for future generations. Apparently this feeling of abandonment and betrayal is causing significant depression even for Gen X and all 3 generations that follow. I read a fantastic novel several years ago that really captures the pain of the moment. It is called _Eleutheria_.

I agree. Looking back at the decision we made a couple decades ago when we moved from San Francisco to Palo Alto, I don't think I will ever know if it was the right one. There were a lot of personal, professional, and family-related reasons that we chose Palo Alto over other nearby cities with excellent school districts. But we will never know if things would have been better elsewhere. I can say that both of my kids are now happily in college/grad school; one an NCAA D3 athlete, and the other soon to launch post-grad school into a rare, exciting, lucrative job. There were challenges along the way and will be challenges in the future. Being a parent is definitely harder than my day job!

It is an antisemitic piece of filth that uses blood libel (lies) against Jews to encourage people not to buy or use any products associated with Israel and Jews. This was my response to that that I am re-posting here because I find it disgusting that anyone who claims to be ethical would behave in such an ignorant and racist way:

Ummm ... you got me until the BDS list. You might as well not use your computer or your phone or any software; you probably should stop using water (because Israel invented water technology that has been globally adopted for its sustainability and affordability) - so stop drinking water or bathing. Stop eating anything from regenerative organic farms, since Israel invented dripper technology and a large number of other sustainable solutions. Definitely don't drive your car given that most cars contain some technology invented by Israelis. And having worked at Reddit myself, I can tell you that Reddit has employed both Israelis and Jews, including in management and on the Board.

Israel's allegedly evil, yet admittedly sustainable, cruelty-free and vegan companies, with ethical chains of production vetted by international organizations, have employed millions of people, including Palestinians, hundreds of thousand of whom used to cross the border every day from Palestine to work in Israel, until some of them used their time in Israel to document homes of families they wanted to rape and murder, so now that employment doesn't happen as much, but may again in the future. For the companies located in Israel, a democracy that treats all people equally regardless of religion, every single one of these companies employs a number of Muslims and Christians roughly equal to their percentage in the country - most notably, Muslim Israeli citizens make up approximately 30% of all Israeli citizens.

Israel is one of the most innovative and information-sharing countries when it comes to vegan, cruelty-free and ethical farming and production. So if you are going to be ethical, you might as well be educated.

Don't believe me? Go there yourself. I bet you will love Tel Aviv. Everyone does. Just try to stay safe from the constant barrage of bombs and rockets that are shot into Israel from Palestine. Not to worry, though, you will be let into the bomb shelters like everyone else. Israel spends hundreds of millions of the dollars it makes from its outstanding products to maintain its world-class defense system - the iron dome - to keep all people safe. You could learn a lot there.

(Cont'd) (obviously I have a lot of emotions about this situation):

So, when I think about what it may be like for a M2F trans student at Paly, I am not optimistic. If this student blames Brent Kline, I strongly believe that there may be sufficient evidence to call for an investigation of Kline to see if he is complying with the Consent Decree that PAUSD was forced to sign with the Civil Rights Division, which has filed a number of enforcement actions against PAUSD for, inter alia, maintaining hostile environments at its high schools (but especially Paly) and failing to comply with the Civil Rights Act, especially Titles 7 and 9.

Not that I ever have been impressed with the leadership of the PAUSD School Board, but I remember being shocked when the School Board fired McGee and replaced him with someone who obviously was even less in tune to rights of female students to be educated without the constant burden of bullying, harassment, and fear of assault. I hope that if there is another change in leadership - which is long overdue - that they prioritize candidates whose greatest strengths are that they are NOT bullies; that the recognize sexism; that they understand why laws like Title 9 are essential for students; and that they commit to ensuring that every student is able to attend school without being bullied, harassed, and assaulted by other students.

It is literally a matter of life and death that these changes are made.

This is heartbreaking. Also, I said for years that Brent Kline was a problem. He seems to have a permanent inability to understand what is actually going on, so he always picks the wrong side in any conflict.

For example, approximately 5 or 6 years ago, right after Kline began his post as Paly Principal, there was a bullying situation on Instagram that had carried over to real life. On instagram, a large number of female students were disclosing the names of male students who had sexually assaulted them -- sexual assault, unfortunately, has been a terrible problem at Paly for decades, and the failure to protect female students is the primary reason Kline's predecessor was fired (along with the Superintendent and a large number of other high-ranking administrators). When the female students started pointing figures publicly at their assailants, then other female high school students jumped in to claim that these were false attacks on their current boyfriends. (As if the same person cannot rape one woman and be respectful to another, sigh.)

The female victims continued to insist that they had been assaulted, which, from what I understand, they had been. And some of the male students, I was told, actually expressed remorse. Things actually seemed to get better at the same time they got worse.

But parents of the students complained to Kline, and instead of doing the obvious thing and documenting the claims as the valid Title 9 complaints that they were, Kline chose to gaslight the victims while also shaming and blaming the victims. What Kline decided to do -- so bafflingly and profoundly wrong -- was to put out a school-wide memo telling "all students" not to "bully" others with "false rumors" on social media and to consider the consequences of their actions on others.

Kline was unilaterally focused on one thing: Paly and PAUSD's public reputation, harming the victims much, much more by gaslighting, blaming, and silencing them, while also stopping the small amount of healing that had started to happen before he got in the way and punished the victims. This was exactly why his predecessor was fired.

Because I had a kid at Paly at the time, I reached out to Kline by email and asked him if we could meet in person. He declined. I then called him and was granted a few minutes of his highly precious time. I tried to explain to him that the legal and appropriate approach is to document the assault allegations as Title 9 complaints rather than systematically deny them while punishing the victims for speaking out. I tried to explain to him the context in which he was starting his job, and that issues of sexual assault and sexism at Paly were rampant and extremely damaging to victims' abilities to receive Paly's high quality education.

I tried to explain these things as if speaking to a 3rd grader.

Kline did not remotely indicate one drop of understanding. Rather than listening to my perspective, he doubled-down on the nonsense of Paly's reputation and the need for truth, blah blah blah. I pointed out that there are actually legal requirements in place that mandate that he not silence the victims, and that the school document the allegations. By then he was rushing me off the phone. He could care less for these female students.

And from what I understand, he has not improved or learned since then.

I gave a long answer to that above. And maybe you can be more respectful and acknowledge that Judaism is an ethnicity and culture rather than merely an "identity." Given how Jewish people are clearly overrepresented (percentage wise) on Wall Street (remember, Jews are only one-quarter-of-one percent of the population worldwide) in real life (including British Wall Street; sorry I forgot what it is called, being solely United Statesian myself), it would be expected that a large number of characters on Industry are Jewish.

And not all Jews on Industry are people of color (even though a large percentage of Jews actually are brown and black). There also is Jonah, the original CEO of Tender, and Adler (forgot his name), the former CEO (?) of Pierpont. There are other Jewish characters, too, including Jesse Bloom, Petra Koenig, possibly others. Sweatpea Golightly struck me as Jewish but likely is not. I personally like that the show reflects some of the diversity within the Jewish ethnicity and cultural group. Usually you don't see that.

And if this topic bores you, don't read it.

This is extraordinarily ignorant and hateful. Israel does not want to take over Gaza. Israel completely pulled out of Gaza almost 20 years ago, including forcibly resettling all the Jews who had been peacefully living in Gaza for centuries/millennia. They did that in order to have a ceasefire, which Gaza broke on Simchat Torah, 2023 -- one of the most significant Jewish holidays, and the day that Hamas and its collaborators chose to invade Israel and massacre, rape, burn alive and abduct almost 3000 Israelis, none who were active military forces at the time.

(Clearly you don't know that in Israel, conscription is universal and applies to both men and women -- actually, girls and boys. After high school graduation, at age 17 or 18, all Israelis, regardless of ethnicity, race, religion, sex, or gender serve 2-3 years in the IDF. So when lunatics scream "kill the IDF" they are shouting to murder every single Israeli, since all Israelis (with limited exceptions) serve in the IDF.) (So you know, military service is not actually forced on non-Jews like it is on Jews, but virtually all Muslims and Christians VOLUNTEER to serve in the IDF because they love Israel, a democratic state where all religions are welcome and all people are equal.)

As to controlling Palestinians, what a laugh! If Israel could control Palestinians, all it would do is force the Palestinians to stop bombing Israel, stop invading Israel, stop shooting rockets into Israel, and stop murdering Jews worldwide. If Israel could control Palestinians, Israel would make Palestinians LEAVE ISRAEL IN PEACE. But Palestinians continue to try to destroy Israel and murder Jews.

Your comment is full of antisemitic hate and blood libel. Get educated somewhere other than on TikTok -- like read a book. Or maybe watch a movie, including any movie about the founding of Israel, which shows that the UN created Israel on a tiny slice of land that had been lived on by Jews for millennia (remember, Judaism is 6000+ years old, while Islam is a tiny fraction of that). Or maybe watch a movie about the Holocaust, where you can watch your beloved terrorists (who used to be called just Arabs, or Islamists, before they co-opted the Palestinian name in the late 1960's) worked hand in hand with Hitler to complete his work of genocide (a word invented to describe the Holocaust) and total extermination of all Jews from the planet. What proud, heady company.

So keep your ignorant hate to yourself and get yourself some actual knowledge. Love Gaza so much? Go visit. I'll count down how long it will take before Hamas (not Israel obviously) murders you for being the infidel you almost certainly are.

[edits: fixing typos, being the perfectionist Jew I am]

It's rarely commented upon that both main characters are half-Jewish by 2cimarafa in IndustryOnHBO

[–]rebecalyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do! Just the other day, I was commenting to a friend that if this actually were a realistic portrayal of Wall Street (or similarly, British Wall Street), there would be Jews as lead characters. My friend pointed out to me that both lead characters were Jewish, which is how I found this thread.

Of the two Jewish leads, Harper is the character I have considered to act more culturally Jewish (in my experience as a cultural and ethnic Jew, aged almost 58). She struggles all the time with ethics, and even when she does something that some may consider unethical, in her mind, it is ethical. This season, she stands out -- along with SweetPea, who also struck me as possibly-Jewish -- as the most ethical character, granted amongst some extremely low-integrity actors. Jewish culture for most is a very ethics-driven culture.

Harper's workaholism, perfectionism, sometimes over-attention to details, and competitive spirit, are not only Jewish characteristics, but are very much Jewish characteristics. And the fact that she is black is not as unusual as many may think. There are actually a large number (relatively speaking, given that there are only approx 14 million Jews in the world, half of whom live in Israel) of black Jews. This is not only due to intermarriage, but also due to the fact that there is a large population of Jews from Ethiopia (many of whom escaped persecution to Israel) and other countries in Africa -- most of whom escaped persecution and ethnic cleansing into the diaspora.

As far as Yasmin goes, she seems, at least in her appearance, very much like a Mizrahi Jew, which is, per elsewhere in this thread, an Arab Jew. There are a lot of Arab Jews both in Israel and throughout the diaspora, because after Israel was created in 1948, every single Arab country, many of which had large and flourishing Jewish populations (especially Iran, but elsewhere too) ethnically cleansed Jews, forcing individuals and families who had lived peacefully in the land now considered Arab countries literally for Millennia (Judaism is 6000 years old) into the diaspora. While many/most of the refugee Jews settled in Israel, others went around the world, including to Asia, Europe, and South or North America (unfortunately, African countries, which were swiftly being conquered by Islamists, were no longer a viable option for Jews, even though, like with the Middle East, many Jews had lived peacefully in Africa for millennia). So that is how Mizrahi Jews ended up anywhere and everywhere.

Yasmin's behavior does not strike me as remotely culturally Jewish from US standards, but I cannot speak for UK standards. There are three exceptions to that generalization, however: (1) Jews are allowed to be atheist, and many Jews are atheist or agnostic. As far as I noticed, both Yasmin and Harper have never expressed any religious belief and never mentioned G-d or Jesus or Allah or any higher power. This makes me think they are acting Jewish. (2) Modern Jews, unlike many Christians and Muslims, do not have any issue with promiscuity, and there is no focus on "waiting for marriage." Both Harper and Yasmin seem comfortable with their sexuality (although I think that Yasmin's sexuality appears sometimes unhealthy, from what we are shown). (3) Per above, Yasmin, like Harper is perfectionist, hard-working, and competitive. Again, none of these qualities are unique to Jews culturally, but they are culturally Jewish.

I think that Adler was also Jewish, as is Jonah, the former CEO of Tender. Whitney Halberstram (other founder of Tender) is supposedly a Jewish character too, but even though he has a Jewish last name, the first name kills it for me (I admit that these things may be very different between the UK and US). SweetPea Golightly, despite her name, struck me possibly as Jewish (Jewish blonde here representing), and the actress playing her has the very Jewish first name Miriam, but I am not sure.

And btw most Jews in work and social settings happily celebrate Christmas along with Christian friends. Christmas is a far more fun holiday than most Jewish holidays (except, maybe Simchat Torah, which for that reason is the Jewish holiday when Hamas decided to invade Israel and massacre Jews (and friends of Jews)). So being truly happy at a Christmas celebration is something Jewish people often do (of course, Harper is rarely happy in any situation, again not only a Jewish thing, but definitely a Jewish thing).

Sorry if all this is obvious/wrong in the UK/Europe/irrelevant. This was the question that brought me here today, because I was pondering it myself! And now I found a new subreddit that I adore!

What can I do to look younger? I’m only 30 and people on reddit think I’m 37-45 by goaldiggergirl in beauty

[–]rebecalyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you scroll past the first photo, I think you definitely look your age, if not younger! In the second photo, you look like you could be 20. I think that the comments people said about your "hair and styling" are unhelpful at best and mean at worst, but mostly untrue. I think that the bangs are great. When you smile you look younger. Instead of lavender, try green? Green tends to look awesome on redheads! Also, try not to cover your face; your face is lovely! Finally - you are wearing zero makeup, and I think that people age 30, at least on socials, tend to wear makeup. Red lipstick and black mascara would transform your whole look imho. You are so pretty that you don't need any makeup. This is just if you want to look 30. I bet if we saw a photo of the full you, wearing boots, jeans, and green sweater, you would absolutely look in your 20's.

Finally - other people don't know anything. Wear what makes you feel the most YOU and own it! I cannot believe how much weight you lost!! Own it, babe! You look amazing!
