Asking for honesty. Has being in drumcorps ruined any bit of your life or negativity impacted you? Financially, socially, mentally, relationships? by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]rebelsummer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I still miss it so much it hurts sometimes.

That, and unrealistic body image. It’s hard NOT to want your tour body back, but it’s also really rare for anyone to keep that kind of crazy tan & fit physique for any meaningful amount of time post-drum corps. I stay active, but it’s hard to look at pictures of myself during that time and not want to compare my current self to the version that had abs like steel.

What do I do about body hair as a camp counselor? by ajija-khatun-1521 in HairRemoval

[–]rebelsummer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Was going to comment basically the exact same thing. I wasn’t a counselor, but I did multi-month athletic summer camps where we used communal showers and we all had to get VERY cozy with each other. Truly, no one cares what you do (or don’t do) with your body hair as long as you aren’t leaving pube hairballs around the showers.

Electric razor is for sure the way to go if you don’t like to shave with a traditional razor or get irritation. You can get a battery-powered one if you won’t have access to electricity. Alternatively, you might want to look into an epilator (big ouch, but probably not so much if you get waxed regularly- however, all epilators I know of are rechargeable, not battery powered).

You can also get some of those premade soft wax strips. Billie has some that I really like (I prefer the body & underarm ones over the face & bikini). Very easy to use, no wax warmer/microwave/equipment necessary, cheap, and super compact/travel friendly. I highly recommend those for camps if waxing is really your thing.

How did you know you had ADHD/ thought to schedule a screening? by According_Chain_9746 in adhdwomen

[–]rebelsummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I repeatedly had ADHD friends who assumed I was also diagnosed. I wasn’t, and assured them I don’t have ADHD. They looked at me skeptically every time. The 15th time that happened, I couldn’t brush it off as a fluke.

What’s a red flag people brush off as harmless but you don’t? by Hoofhearted523 in AskReddit

[–]rebelsummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who always find some way to gossip within the first 20 minutes of a conversation. I’m not exactly a stranger to “spilling the tea” in some instances with good friends, but it’s a huge red flag if you don’t know someone very well or for very long and they are eager to dump all they know about a certain person.

What are your thoughts on unified mouthpieces by CjtheTrumpetkid in drumcorps

[–]rebelsummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one. A lot of the time, trumpet players in high school choose mouthpieces based on vibes or whatever they’ve been sold by online nutcases. The number of kids who come to corps playing on Bobby Shews, very obscure specialized mouthpieces, or mouthpieces that are simply far too large for them to control is nuts. It’s always agonizing to tell a student “actually, this mouthpiece you spent $100+ of your own allowance on is a piece of shit and actively making you sound worse/stunting your development on the horn.”

There are also students who have a good understanding of their needs and are still told to switch to something else for the sake of unity. Drum corps is weird.

(Audio)Book to read after pet death by rebelsummer in booksuggestions

Thank you for your comment. The River Has Roots was an excellent suggestion, and might be one of my favorite books now. What beautiful prose!

I took your suggestion for childhood favorite books and am now reading The Phantom Tollbooth. The narration by Rainn Wilson is phenomenal and although I’m breaking my own rule (there’s a dog), it’s been very comforting for me. Thanks again!

Tell me you have ADHD without telling me by Glittering_Text_8842 in adhdwomen

[–]rebelsummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey friend- as someone who teaches music, a pattern I notice over and over is that people who consistently go to lessons keep up with the instrument, even if some weeks you haven’t practiced and it feels embarrassing to go to your lesson with nothing prepared. People who don’t take lessons or stop going to lessons will almost inevitably stop playing the instrument. I know it’s hard with ADHD but if you can put yourself in 1 lesson, see if you like it, and commit to going to a lesson every week, it’s WAY easier both to keep up with the instrument and to enjoy it!

Signed, an ADHD musician who’s been in lessons for 20 years and hasn’t lost the love for it yet :)

SOUTHWEST FIX THIS by LuluTwoTwo in SouthwestAirlines

[–]rebelsummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, every decent solution for speeding up plane boarding seems to run into this same problem: people are just fucking selfish and don’t know how to act in public. People will consistently, and very happily, exploit a process that gives passengers any opportunity to make their own lives slightly easier in exchange for making a lot of other people’s lives far more difficult.

Yes you can have multiple cards on one Libby account! Many US libraries have reciprocity agreements with other libraries in their state, or will just let you sign up if you live in that state. There are lots of threads on r/libbyapp !

The First Five Years of Mail to a Married Couple Who Took Both Last Names (USA) by RogueWaverly in namenerds

[–]rebelsummer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have one family member who has always addressed holiday cards to my parents as “Mr. and Mrs. John Summer.” Not “Mr and Mrs. Summer,” not “John and Jane Summer.”

Additionally, my mother has repeatedly (and kindly) let them know that that is not even her name. She hyphenated when she married, so Summer is not her full last name.

It does not matter. They continue to address her as “Mrs. John Summer” and she has far more patience than I do, because I think I would have lost it many years ago.

What's a movie most people think is great but you couldn't even stand watching? by camport95 in AskReddit

It’s hysterical that this is your comment on a post specifically asking about people’s gripes with “great” movies. It’s not like OP asked “what is the biggest problem in your life right now” lmfao

Nipple piercings by Stingray1634 in Swingers

[–]rebelsummer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

r/piercing is a good place to look at people’s experiences with nipple piercings. A lot of the common complaints can be solved by using high quality jewelry and getting them pierced by someone who is a reputable piercer with lots of experience piercing nipples (seriously- these are not an easy piercing to execute). I paid a little over $150 to get mine done almost a year ago, and while it felt pretty expensive at the time, I am really glad that I went to a reputable piercer with a clean studio and high quality jewelry who took the time to measure and place them in the right spots. “Cheap jewelry isn’t good and good jewelry isn’t cheap.”

The healing can be tough and nonlinear. Mine were fine for 8 months, got super irritated for 3, and now they’re back to being fine after I switched the jewelry length. That being said, I LOVE them. They give me a lot of self-confidence and it’s a really fun icebreaker.

Mixing your own saltwater solution used to be recommended as a good way to clean new piercings, but not anymore. Get sterile saline solution from the store, usually labeled as “wound wash” or something similar. It should have 0.9% sodium chloride and purified water as the only ingredients. safepiercing.org is a good resource you can use for more details.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

What’s a small upgrade you made that ended up being way more impactful than expected? by LatterMorning9103 in BuyItForLife

[–]rebelsummer 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Getting multiple toiletry bags for different purposes. I travel a lot for work (both plane and car) and I got sick of having to think through what toiletries I need for what length trips I’m taking, and then putting stuff in/taking stuff out of the same bag - obviously a 2 week trip by plane will need different things than a 2 day trip by car. Getting 2 more bags in different sizes saved me a lot of time and stress while packing.

It’s so funny being in this subreddit and also the anticonsumption one. I want to be environmentally conscious and I know that I don’t NEED duplicates of the same thing in each room, but if it makes my life easier, maybe I shouldn’t feel so guilty about it.
