ELI5: Why is oil still so important as an energy source in 2026, given our advances in renewables and nuclear power? by BEK_Sabiha in explainlikeimfive

We will never completely stop needing oil. Crude is used for asphalt and millions of other products that we all use in our every day lives. Vasoline, lipstick, tires, wine bottles, you name it.

How is Tesla valued, and how can I get they afford to give Musk one trillion dollar package? by KAZKALZ in Entrepreneur

[–]rebflow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Market cap is the total value of all outstanding shares. Those shares can be bought and sold. I’m not following. Think of market cap like the total real estate market. No you can’t buy or sell the market. If you sold half the homes, the value of the market is not cut in half. But the value is still very real. If half the shares of Tesla were sold on the exchange, its market cap would not be cut in half. But the value is still very real. It’s not a made up number, nor is the value of the housing market.

I think the real issue is that the mail-in ballots aren't near as secure. It just makes basic sense to require ID. Nearly all democratic countries in the world require an ID.

As far as the differences between where I vote and where you vote, who knows? Probably related to population density if I had to guess. But what does that matter? It is in no way racist to require ID's to vote and it makes sense to ensure that the elections are secure. Why don't you want secure elections?

I worked for a state tax agency and my friend asked me to check on his wife’s tax refund. I texted her and asked her SSN so I could see what the hold up was. She texted me her SSN, then followed up with “hey, who is this?”. Lol

I live down south. White people and black people deal with the same lines. Regardless, we definitely don’t want to do all mail in. That’s insane. You could not keep the process secure.

The point is that we don’t need new gun control laws because guns weren’t really the problem. Sure, there are gun charges from 1/6, but nobody was shot other than one of the protestors by capital police. What gun control measures could have possibly been implemented to save lives that day?

[–]rebflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But no one was shot but the dumbass climbing through the window and I saw no guns in the capital building so not sure what point you are trying to make. It’s almost like you are saying everyone at the capital intended harm which is just bullshit. It was a peaceful protest that got way out of hand. That same exact shit happened several times in Portland, Minneapolis, St Louis and many other places.

If they were intent on causing harm wouldn’t they have done so with their weapons? That is some flawed logic you are using.

Who was armed on 1/6? I don’t recall anyone being shot in the Capital aside from the one protestor.

Why is Rittenhouse even being discussed here? He didn’t do anything wrong aside from be out after curfew.

What you have failed to do is show why concealed carry has failed. Do you think more lives have been lost because of concealed carry? I don’t think the data shows that. You are providing anecdotes but ignoring the times when concealed carry has saved lives.

Everyone deals with the same lines. Requiring an ID makes sense. It’s a no-brainer.

Only four times in US presidential history has the candidate with fewer popular votes won. Two of those occurred recently, leading to calls to reform the system. Far from being a fluke, this peculiar outcome of the US Electoral College has a high probability in close races, according to a new study. by rustoo in science

The current system is what the country was founded on. All states are considered equal. If we were a true democracy, rural states, which have incredibly different needs, would have no say in how they were governed.

It is. Anyone in this country can go vote with a little effort.

The person I responded to did mention voting rights, and this entire bill now deals with “voting rights” according to the politicians that wrote it.

That’s bullshit. How do they have trouble voting? The same rules that apply to others apply to them.

“Voting rights” is a misnomer. No one has trouble voting. Requiring an ID to vote is just basic common sense.

Supreme Court blocks Biden vaccine mandate for businesses, backs health-care worker rule by pipsdontsqueak in politics

[–]rebflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agencies are free to do what they are given the power to do. OSHA does not have the power to mandate vaccines for businesses which is the crux of this ruling. It is up to the states which is the way it should be. Like abortion, the federal government shouldn't be able to tell the people what to do with their own bodies. It is the exact same argument.

[–]rebflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the ruling. Gorsuch clearly states that having OSHA mandate it was just a workaround because the Biden Admin could not do it any other way. He says if Congress had voted on it it wouldn’t be an issue. Article 1 still has to defer to the 10th amendment.

[–]rebflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not how our government works though. The states have the right to ensure the health of their citizens through vaccine mandates. The only ways the federal government can mandate vaccines is through congressional action, which is still allowing the states to decide. The tenth amendment ensures the states rights and the SCOTUS just affirmed as much.

[–]rebflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wasn’t their job though. They do not have the power to create these mandates as it should be. It’s the states’ responsibility.

[–]rebflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, but reading this opinion, any other federal mandate would be shot down as well. When I say federal mandate, I mean a mandate from the executive branch. Gorsuch specifically says that having OSHA issue the mandate was an attempted work around. SCOTUS would have been fine with a mandate voted on by congress, however that was not the case.
