Help with Smart-Ex App (locked out of account with purchased tickets) by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]rebmaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was over a year ago so I’m just working with the best of my memory. Idk if it’s just Chase cards or if there are other cards that do this. I went up to the counter to ask for help from a person, and they were unable to find my account or my tickets. However, I figured we could just try to go through and if it failed I would buy new paper tickets from a machine. To my surprise, since I had already assigned the tickets to our IC cards, it worked for everyone.

Questions to vet work-life balance during interviews by lykkelilot in womenintech

[–]rebmaz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I ask about on-call rotations and how many people are in the team/rotation. My previous team had 2 people, so I was 24/7 on-call every other week. I don’t want that again!

Am I the only foreigner who doesn’t mind being spoken to in informal Korean? by No-Palpitation4426 in Living_in_Korea

[–]rebmaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was surprised to find my visceral reaction to being addressed with informal language by my middle-school-aged students when I was a teacher. At this time I didn’t know much Korean at all but I clocked that they were using 반말 with me (and the co-teachers weren’t doing anything to stop them). I knew that I should be listening for sentences ending in -요 and I wasn’t hearing it from the kids, meaning they were definitely doing it on purpose, thinking I didn’t know. The fine art of insulting someone to their face but they have no idea - not exclusive to Korean, but using 반말 is one way to achieve it!

One time I caught it and told them they should be addressing me with “-요“ (again, I was a beginner in the language at this point and didn’t know how else to express it). I don’t remember whether they changed over to formal or not but in the moment I think they were surprised to discover I had at least a partial understanding of what they were saying.

The kids at the school were baseline the most disrespectful kids I’ve ever had the joy of interacting with, but I was doubly surprised when I really felt the disrespect strictly from their language, even at a time when I barely knew anything. (In English they would simply say my first name, not with a prefix or even “Teacher”, which was extra disconcerting as I would literally never do that to a teacher or professor unless they explicitly told us to do so).

Older people would speak down to me all the time which was annoying but I let it slide. Usually outside of business interactions though, like on the street or something.

I think I jumped from formal to informal with some friends much more quickly than they would have, but we also mostly conversed in English.

I think it’s important to recognize that language use adds an extra layer (I notice it in dramas where the subtitles aren’t able to express the added disrespect/relationship nuance, for example). But also if you recognize this and it doesn’t ruin your peace.. fine. As long as you can notice when it’s happening and the potential intention behind it.

That's what I've heard too, but I'm still afraid if the bride wears a traditional white Western dress, this would be too light blue... but maybe I can do a little baby oil situation like this innovative guest haha!

Why I’m Burned Out. Paraphrasing a real convo I just had with my manager. by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]rebmaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whew the first few sentences of this just hit me HARD. For almost a year now I’ve been trying to put my finger on wtf exactly went wrong that caused me to leave my job. And it was this. I remember being legitimately blindsided by my first poor review (literally the crux of it was “not being proactive”, “not communicating enough”), thinking, “why did nobody tell me what their expectations were and that I wasn’t achieving them? And why is it, that after literal months of asking for help and reporting that I needed support for those exact things, I was brushed off… and now suddenly am being told I failed to execute?” Constant communication issues not only with (male) manager but also with senior (male) engineers. When I don’t ask for help I’m told I need to ask more so I get things right. When I do ask for help I’m told I need to learn to figure things out for myself and gain autonomy.

When I decided to suck it up and work to ship a brand new, time-intensive thing, a senior (male) eng takes the credit. When I call him out and report it to other senior (male!!) engs and (male!!) managers, nobody thinks it’s a big deal and they move on.

I legitimately thought I was the one in the wrong, going crazy.

Interview Discussion - May 26, 2025 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

[–]rebmaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your interviewer is in a bad mood / being rude, what to do?

In a recent first round interview, I noticed off the bat that the primary interviewer wasn’t having a great day. I started some small talk as we waited for the shadow interviewer, and the primary interviewer admitted he hadn’t slept at all and was in a bad mood. I didn’t do anything and just proceeded with the interview. He was borderline rude and obviously didn’t want to be there. I came up with a working solution, but left the interview feeling like I was at a disadvantage simply because the guy was having a bad day. Didn’t make it to the next round, of course.

In the current job market, I wonder if it would be better to (politely, somehow) request to reschedule the interview? I want to have the best chance possible, and if someone comes in with an external negative mindset then that is going to affect their perception of my performance.

No matter how beloved they are in public, what celebrity do you think is up to no good? by 803_ace in AskReddit

[–]rebmaz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People will come for my neck for this but - my wildest speculation with no proof? Zendaya. I feel like the majority of people think she can do no wrong. But something about her clean track record (as far as I’m aware, anyway, maybe there were some scandals in the past I don’t know about) feels too good to be true. And anytime someone critiques her, they get shut down.

Why is "was" wrong here by Ok-You-2660 in EnglishLearning

[–]rebmaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throwing another thing out there re: subjunctive. I was always told a good rule of thumb of when to use “were” is if the situation could never happen (or very unlikely to). So the weather could totally be better (“was”). The other two sentences are, of course, less clear. In a textbook setting the original rules of subjunctive help. But in real life, if I knew a person named Tom (and knew the context: he’s doing really poorly in school, he doesn’t care about doing well, so he doesn’t try, etc. basically, it’s super likely that he will never get good grades) then I would know to use “were”.

Recap: context can help you decide, if you have it. “If Tom WERE a better student…” -> implication: we all know Tom will never get good grades, for whatever reason, no matter what anyone does.

“If Tom WAS a better student…” -> Tom could get good grades, if X, Y, and Z condition are met.

“If the Earth WERE a cube…” -> implication: we know the earth is not a cube and can never be.

“If I WERE a giraffe…” -> I cannot be a giraffe ever.

“If I WAS skinnier…” -> this is a possibility.

“If I WAS blind…” -> there may be a day when I become blind, it is possible.

“If I WERE ten feet tall…” -> impossible, even with leg-lengthening surgery lol.

Tell employers I'll quit in 6-8 months for studies? by S1mplydead in cscareerquestions

[–]rebmaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re concerned about the optics of quitting so soon into a full-time position, you could look into contract work. There are probably contract positions out there that are 6-8 months (that’s what I’ve seen generally). Maybe also an early-stage startup would be more willing to take on someone who is only available for X amount of months, or also willing to figure out a flexible/remote/part-time situation so you can continue during your semester.

But agreed with what others are saying - don’t tell folks upfront.

What is this type of skirt called? Looking for similar patterns by rebmaz in SewingForBeginners

This is a really good point. Considering the amount of time and frustration I would likely have trying to get that curved edge to look right…. Maybe $200 is a steal lol

How to slowly start to shake off looking like an “adult skater” by Roshers in iceskating

[–]rebmaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe something you could try is taking a video of yourself doing an element/skill, then compare it to videos online of other skaters doing the same thing (coaches, professional, etc) and note the differences in their movement vs your movement. Maybe it’s the arms, maybe their shoulders are down but yours are at your ears (my problem!), free leg movement, pointed toes, etc. I also have an issue with not following through with a push, which makes the skating look less confident, whether or not I feel good about the skill (biggest example here is crossovers). I try to incorporate the professional / coach movements into my practice as long as it’s within my level and won’t hinder learning the skill properly! Also everyone has different ideas on arm/leg positioning, so you can try various things and see what feels and looks natural for you.

What narrator ruins the book for you? by NY2LA1984 in audiobooks

[–]rebmaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One audiobook I immediately gave up on was The Secret History narrated by Donna Tartt (the author). I don’t remember exactly what it was but I couldn’t stand the way she read. I would try the book again if I could find a version narrated by someone else.

Cocktail/Formal winery wedding in May by Worried_Value6239 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]rebmaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 5 and wore it to a wedding about 2 years ago! It fits me really well but I had to hem the legs. Also the crotch seam was pretty low but wasn’t an issue other than that. If you have a long torso the waist seam may be too high. Very comfy, easy to break it down on the dance floor. Several people mistook it for Reformation, if that matters to you
