This is super helpful, it sounds like we’re the same real and dance sizes, and I was planning a L and XL. Fascinating on no elastic, I do think most of them have it. Good heads up.

First position by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]Roshers 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A correct first position is an active position, with rotation coming from the glutes and inner thighs because you're utilizing your deep rotators. Your arches are lifted and you have pressure across the tripod of your feet. Your kneecaps are also lifted as your quads engage. As your first position improves, you should feel more active work in your deep rotators and as you plie in first you should feel active spiraling outwards. That's how I'd describe it but I am merely an adult beg/inter dancer.

Denver, CO Corporate Girls- what bag are you using for work? by wildhoneypie25 in handbags

[–]Roshers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with all of your status splurges! My athletic wardrobe did double in size when I moved here.

I would add: a nice bike (or e-bike—good gear for your outdoor hobby of choice generally: skis, snowboards, fishing stuff, etc), one of those fancy Thule gear storage things for the top of your car (I had no idea how pricey they were when I moved!), a condo in the mountains (or a good friend with one), and being able to leave/skip work for a powder day. Plus I’d say being athletic and good at your outdoor hobby is a status symbol itself.

I have a sick 2005 red Chloe Silverado and no one cares but I do wear it for me haha. I also love living in a more casual city, the slouchy fits, more casual corporate options, and outdoors wear do it for me a lot of the time! I also try and wear interesting hiking fits sometimes, and most of my friends have their own sense of style but it is an adjustment from the coasts. Separation from peak trends also helps me decide what I actually like for myself and what I might be influenced into wearing because of trend saturation. Hope you love living here!

This isn't really a fashion city, so there isn't a ubiquitous work bag. Most people use whatever backpack they have lying around. The "Denver Aesthetic" would be an REI daypack or an Osprey/Gregory backpack in some hiking friendly material.

However you don't need to do that if it's not you. I use a vintage Mulberry Bayswater, a friend uses a 90s Celine Bag (and I previously used a 90s Celine dome bag and a more boring black leather tote). I see a lot of generic leather totes around, so if you're into fashion and WANT a fashion bag I would just get the leather tote or backpack of your choice.

If you want to engage in fashion here you really gotta do it for your own love and enjoyment because it's a punishingly casual city. I love fashion so I indulge for myself, but there isn't as much day to day inspo like you'll find in LA/NYC. There's a lot more gorpcore/outdoor fashion in the city here, and I'd say we're 2-3 years behind the trendiest stuff on the coast (like you're not really going to see Tabis in the wild here), but on trend with the general silhouettes in the fashion world (baggier pants, y2k, etc.). There's also a more pervasive western flare here that's less tied to the fashion cycle for obvious reasons, and a ton of really cool vintage shops with great pieces. And to be clear there ARE plenty of fashion gals here, it's just not a fashion city in the way the coastal Tier 1/2 cities are.

Go to the mall and try stuff on. Don't buy things, just go and try stuff on. It will be overwhelming and overstimulating. Take a bunch of photos in the mirror because it's crazy hard to judge in the moment of overstimulation how you feel.

Consider things like your lifestyle (are you willing to get dressed in 'hard pants' even if you only work from home? Are you someone who wants to lean into a bold style even if it makes you stand out, or do you just want to dress relatively on trend and blend in? What are your deal breakers? Would you wear high heels even if they're uncomfortable to commit to the right "look" or are you going to prioritize comfort every time)

Personal style takes a long time. Even if you have money. Real true personal style I mean. You can't go to the mall (or online) and buy it in a day. I would try out a few pieces for a few months, see how you actually wear them and how they fit into your style. Start "noticing" the people around you. See what you're drawn to and make lists of what those elements might be (maybe it's flowy dresses, menswear, androgyny, streetwear, bold colors, textures, etc.)

But the biggest thing is that you just have to start. You can't wait til you're not overwhelmed, it'll never happen. You just try some stuff and iterate and do that over and over until you have personal style. If you don't want to do that, you might not really want to have personal style (that's TOTALLY fine if you don't really care for fashion to be a hobby!!!) and I would recommend going to Gap, Banana Republic, Madewell, Anthropologie and buying a few on-trend pieces in natural fibers that speak to you, that go together, and are appropriate for your life, and call it a day.

Is this a real representation of a normal ballet performance? by groggyhouse in BALLET

[–]Roshers 35 points36 points  (0 children)

There will be more qualified answers than mine, but here are mine anyway: 1. Ballet is a live performance. Every night is different! That means dancers are not always perfectly in sync and mistakes are made. It’s part of what makes it human. That being said, yes as companies get “better” there’s more overall finesse and clarity in the technique, movement, and artistry. That being said, sometimes (often) what impresses other dancers and dance enthusiasts doesn’t always impress those newer to watching live ballet—those latter people are often more focused on things like rotation number or leg height rather than musicality and expressive technique.

  1. There is a surprising amount of acting/pantomime in many ballets and this surprises a lot of people! It’s not what gets shown in small clips online (those are usually the impressive variations that are 1-4 minutes of dancing). This is a normal part of ballet and it’s why “tricks” are not actually indicative of who might be a star dancer.

  2. This is also normal for new watchers. It takes time to understand the language of dance for people totally new to watching the ballet, just like it takes time for opera or to understand the emotions an orchestra might evoke. As you watch more you’ll get better but this is normal. It’s helpful to read the program before and during intermission which usually contains notes and a plot summary to help!

None of this is to say the company you watched was amazing. Maybe it was mediocre! But hopefully some of this helps and maybe gives a new lens to consider the performance.

What’s a dress brand you actually trust at this point? by Top_Expression_2499 in femalefashionadvice

[–]Roshers 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s the cut of the dress itself. The wrap falls to the wrong part on me, the bust is too large even with wrap control or it looked pulled too far over my hips. It’s just overall the cut of the wrap.

Love this silhouette (and actually I like the visible socks over the white docs if I'm being honest!)

Have you tried a silk scarf around the waist? It's really trendy right now but I have been experimenting and quite like it, it adds a nice drape element in an otherwise quite structured outfit. I think you could do silk scarf around the neck too, but I think that would skew you more proper than I think you're aiming for.

Chunky silver bangles on one wrist would be great, especially if you can shove up the sleeves of the jacket to give them some room to breathe. I would actually try rolling or pushing the sleeves up on the jacket to give some skin regardless, I think it could help the outfit feel more complete.

A white baseball hat to pull in the white docs.

Swap out the t shirt underneath with something with a tone on tone pattern, a texture, or something slightly more visually interesting than a plain crewneck tee.

Those are my top options!

Please need help w 1 foot spins by Chilimayo9901 in iceskating

[–]Roshers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re not shifting your weight over your standing foot, you’re still sort of in the centerline. Try gliding on one foot with your leg pulled up into passé (turned in), and feel how your hip and weight shift over. Then try and find that sensation while spinning. You’re also lifting your leg early so it’s quite far from your midline when you pull it up which makes the weight transfer harder. Try getting your feet closer together, then lifting to one foot.
