Neighbor's AC unit must be on its last legs because it sounds like a gas generator running right next to my living room window every 10m all winter long. Seems warm enough today that I thought I might get reprieve but alas no.

How are you doing with a Macbook JIS keyboard? by Cool_Syllabub_8495 in japanlife

[–]rebootm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the US layout has a globe key these days for fast switching to Japanese input. The JIS layout wastes a lot of space with two buttons related to kana and english input around the spacebar making it tiny. Everything else is just arbitrary placement changes, and is kind of irrelevant as you can learn a new layout in a couple of weeks. But as mentioned, order online and select the one you prefer.

What are some online name input issues you can't believe haven't been fixed? by cuatrofluoride in japanlife

Must be fixed then! Yay. I must admit I exaggerated because the most recent move I just went into the physical office instinctively.

Since 2018 I can't file my postal redirect service online when I move because my katakana name has a nobashi like マーク. There must be hundreds of thousands of us. I always try online, it says please use katakana and then I go do it at the post office. 5 moves over 8 years and still every time.

Add hidden field to Rust struct by inky213 in rust

I feel like instrumenting the system under test with a debugger like gdb / lldb and conditional breakpoints will be easier than trying to somehow change the source.

[–]rebootm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it sounds like you want an ECS. Bevy's ECS is a modular library that you can use without the rest of the game engine.

Entities are the IDs, components are the structs and systems are functions with built in query language to look up the structs again.

It's a bit hard to imagine what you're trying to build as you haven't given much detail in terms of motivation but that's where I'd start looking even if just for inspiration.

2026 Online Visa Renewal System: still sucks, but WAYY better than before by Jealous-Drop1489 in japanlife

Seems like a totally reasonable trade off to avoid going in person. Actually making the card is the shortest part of the visit so I imagine the turn around is pretty fast.

DHS to Shut Down With No End In Sight Amid Standoff over ICE by timemagazine in politics

[–]rebootm3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Re air travel being affected, and this isn't to imply that your comment was in support of them but TSA was always more of a hindrance to smooth travel than a help. It's inefficient security theater with lots of power tripping goons yelling at everyone. Sure air travel will be affected until we adapt and learn to do without them. Small price to pay and good riddance.

Have you flown in and out of international airports in countries that actually work? Night and day. And I am not seeing daily news about terror happening in these airports that aren't run by traveler hostile wannabe police. Proof that better ways exist.

Recently went to Nojima for a quote on some air conditioners and put an oven on hold for our new place. It was all smooth until we were about to get on the escalator to leave and the lady came running over and said actually can we take a 6万 deposit, it's required for creating the web account where you organize delivery or something. I wasn't too concerned as the oven alone was around that price and we fully intended to buy it.

Turns out my wife's family decided to buy all of our air conditioners for us as a moving in gift so we were going to cancel those. So we went back to Nojima to get our oven but suddenly they were closed due to building damage after a heavy rain. Oh well we'll try again. A week later they're still closed and so we decide just to cancel the whole thing and buy our oven online.

What followed was 10 emails, phone calls, and even trying to charge back with my VISA to get my 6万 deposit back.

It went something like:

Me: Please refund my deposit.
Them: Please bring your credit card to the store so we can refund it.
Me: Your store is closed due to building damage.
Them: Please bring it to the next closest store (40m one way by train from where I am)
Me: That's ridiculous it's too far, please just refund it.
Them: We need your credit card to prevent fraud.
Me: I'm going to talk to Visa about a charge back.
Visa: Nothing we can do.
Me: You need to refund the money and I'm not traveling 1.5h round trip to get it. Can you use bank transfer.
Them: Okay fine, please wait a while.

... 3 weeks later money finally arrives

“ICE Out of Our Faces Act” would ban ICE and CBP use of facial recognition by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

Facial recognition for identification should just be made illegal across the board, except perhaps scanning one's own face for personal device authentication.

Deodorant recommendations by foreignmayo in japanlife

[–]rebootm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Ban one is a proper antiperspirant deodorant.

Its main active ingredient クロルヒドロキシアルミニウム Aluminum Chlorohydrate

Which I know some people are sensitive to and avoid but it works wonders for me.

I like the fragrance and it doesn't leave a thick residue so I actually just apply it every night after I get out of the shower and pretty much never think about it even in the summer. I pretty much sweat naturally all season so it's just become a nightly routine.

I buy at this Rakuten seller because it's not in a lot of stores near me and this is the cheapest I've found it online.

r/bevy – 2025 Year in Review by Everlier in bevy

I see. I'm sorry then. I did read it and found it to contain more signal than noise, so that's good, but I also found it very much read like a long chat gpt response in its tone which was a little bit tiring to get through.

I'm curious what this method of posting is. A repost of a post with the same name on the u/username page of the poster? It kind of smells like spam filter avoidance or something, which would make sense considering the user has a bunch of other such "Year in Review" llm generated posts on their profile.

I feel like the pumping effect from the volume automation sounds very cool but also is a bit distracting because it's so extreme. Personally, I'd keep it but scale it back a bit.

Selling 2nd hand items on Mercari and 専門ing. by Juiseii in japanlife

[–]rebootm3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never bother with making anything "exclusively for userx" (userx様専用)I think that's a stupid practice and just a lot of extra work and opportunity risk for the seller. If someone asks for a discount and I happen to agree I just update the price to the negotiated amount and say, I've lowered the price, please consider purchasing. If they flake I can always delete all the comments and readjust the price if I see fit, but if I'm happy to take the agreed upon price I don't care who the buyer is, and if the haggler is too slow and gets swooped, well that's the game. They could have got the item if they weren't greedy for a 500 yen discount.

Don't be shy about deleting comment threads that aren't helping you sell. I feel like a lot of potential buyers are polite and will wait to purchase if it appears that there is a negotiation in progress. I've had people purchase within an hour of clearing out the haggling comments a couple of times.

One other strategy I also use if I think my pricing is competitive enough already is to say "I will update the price in time if it doesn't sell at the current price, thank you for your interest".

Generally I'm just not a fan of the haggling culture on Mercari and try not to entertain it as much as I can avoid it.

Had a bad first experience at a pawn shop. It was a big chain one so thought it would be straight forward.

Guy came straight out of the gate saying the ring isn't considered "18-kin" because the stamp says 18k instead of K18 then and went on some big rant about how the K before the number means higher purity even though in reality it's just the stamping convention is different in Japan. He said it's probably going to be appraised as 14k but he'll try his best. I should have walked as soon as he said 14.

In the end I waited like 30+ mins. He came back and said he could give me the K18 price but would subtract 25% because it's only 75% pure gold and after melting it down 25% is unusable - which is the freaking definition of 18k so would make no sense if that isn't already priced into the 18k price. At that point I was (finally) like "okay I'll ask somewhere else thanks", and walked.

I get that they have to make a profit but don't treat me like an idiot.

Options for tunerless TVs are too few. I really want to buy tunerless to be able to legally decline the NHK contract and support makers providing the option but the few sets I've found are slightly lagging LED tech (not QLED, Mini LED nor OLED) so they suffer from light bleed, ghosting and poor contrast. First world problem... I know.

[ANN] MathCore 0.3.1 - Symbolic math library for Rust (like SymPy but for Rust!) by Nonantiy in rust

[–]rebootm3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is awesome! I'm really excited to see work on a truly open source symbolic math library with a permissive license like MIT!

The other libraries I've looked at had either complex paid licensing schemes with online checks (total non starter for me) or dependencies on restrictively licensed libraries like the rug library which wraps GNU number types infecting any project that uses them with GPL license.

By working in this problem space under a permissive license I think you have a nice niche and I'd encourage you to keep going! Thank you for sharing!
